Its an auto, so far came up with Carter AVS 4640, it this correct?  Also does anyone have a good shot of how the kickdown is setup? Any good sources for the carb?  Thanks.

4640s is correct carb....I don't have any kickdown linkage pics

4618 is the right carb number. 4640 is an A/C carb.

I had the same 4618 on my Daytona.    :2thumbs:
I've never owned anything but a MoPar. Can you say that?

Speedfreak

OK, 4618 it is.  Is this a tough number to find or what.  Best source?  Checked eBay, but nothing worthwhile, seems they need a lot of work.  Tough part is restoring the body to look good.

Well, if you want to more specific, a Daytona would take the 4618SA, the earlier versions prior to about Jan. '69 would be the 4618S.......

Oh yeah, the kickdown.....

Troy, the 4618S is assembly line,in most cases the 4618SA is considered over counter replacement. :shruggy:

Are you missing the linkage or are you unsure as to how to set it up?

If it's the second, disconnect the vertical rod, and remove the linkage clips at the carburetor.  There are holes in the kickdown bracket and swinging linkage pieces.   Using an appropriate drill bit, line up the holes to keep the swinging piece in place.  The vertical rod should be adjusted to JUST fit onto the pivot, and snap on.  The horizontal piece should do the same--it should just touch the throttle linkage rod when the pivot is pinned.  Pull the drill bit, reconnect the return spring and linkage clips, and go.

Excellent, thank you.  I picked up the correct linkage, but don't have the correct carb yet.  Now at least I know how to install it as soon as I get the right carb.

Don't think so. S desigination carbs were used up to and including December 68. January 69 and newer carbs were desiginated with SA. Correct carb for auto Daytona should be 4618SA with a date code of C9 or D9 timeframe.

Hopefully that isn't all you need to get going....... Get a carb just to run it. Take it from experience, a 4618SA isn't going to be easy to find.... When I was on the search for mine, either everything was a 4618S or WAY too expensive for my taste..

I ended up finding about 9 and bought them all !!!!
Just kidding !!   :icon_smile_big:

Good luck on the search............ May the AVS-force be with you......

OK, knew it would not be easy.  For the time being, what carb which is not too hard to find,  would work and look close, including being able to use the correct kickdown?  Would the 4640 fit the bill or another number you can recommend.

Any 440 AVS from that era would work.... Heck, even a 383 version would work to get you running down the road. Initially, I had one of the new Edelbrock AFB's on the car, but they make new Edelbrock AVSs now ( but they don't have provisions for the thermostat choke, only the electrical one that's easily used - I actually have one of those on my '69 C500 now).

From what I remember reading in the Winged Warriors news letter was , the S and the SA stood for revisions for the carb.  The first model would be the 4618S, then 4618SA or whatever number.  99% of the time, the change / revision started in Jan.  Anything could have been a revision.  I know for my 4615 carb on my 383 charger, it went from S having the left hand thread single mixture screw to SA having a double mixture right hand thread screws on the base of the carb.  Revisions could have also had anything to do with jetting, metering rods, casting, etc.

Agreed the SA went to the double mixture screws as opposed to the single screw on the S carb. And my understanding is the change took place January of 69. Like you say there could have been other changes but that is the obvious one.

The 4640 carb would work great in my opinion until you could come across a correct 4618SA.

Speedfreak

Former owner put  on an Edelbrock, nameplate removed, AVS 1812S, works fine as far as running, but the downshift linkage is all wrong, also a makeshift linkage from the choke lever to the manifold.  Downshift seems to work OK, but the choke does nothing.  I found a 4618S that needs a total rebuild, total should be around $500.  Seems like the best alternative at this point.

resq302

Wow.  $500 isnt that bad at all if that includes a rebuild!  Especially if Scott Smith is doing it!

Actually he is the person I contacted and has one, only thing is it is a H8 date code.  To me it seemed too far from my build of June 69, but he says it was not uncommon, Chrysler pulled the carbs at random and he has no problem putting it on as correct.  I have still been looking and found a A9, which closer.  So what do you guys think?   Hold out or what?

Here are pictures of my carb... Shoot, I thought I had the 4618SA on the Daytona now... Nope, it is one of my 4618S's I had laying around I had Scott restore. Guess He'll be getting another carb, this one......
The build date of my Daytona is 427 ( April 27th )..... the date code of the carb I have is C9 ( guess that's March 9th ) or March of 1969? I'm not up to speed on date codes.

C9 would be March of 69 Troy. Per your carb tag the 0849 would be the 84th day of 69. Not sure exactly of the calender date on that but a quick guess puts it at March 20 something. Give or take. Ironically I have one with the same 0849 date code on the tag with a C9 for the other code. A twin, so they must have tagged a few that day.

Cool, then this is a pretty darn good match for my 427 car.....   :2thumbs:

Thank you for the info, and thanks very much for the photos, really helps alot.  I kept searching, since the H8 from HarmsAuto are way off, despite what he says.  Have found the correct D9 carb, about a 1 1/2 months before my build from another carb guy, R D Katter, who does the Hemi carbs, he had about 10 of these laying around!  Only $50 more than Scott, so he is restoring one for me right now.  Guy is incredibly knowledgeable.

resq302

Mr Katter did the one I sent him for my charger also.  Although the majority of the people who use him have had great success, I had lean running issues with mine.  I sent it back to him and it still was not running right.  Very nice and tried to help me through all the issues over the phone so I really can not complain about his customer service, just that I couldn't get my carb to run right at all.  Maybe it was a bad core?  Who knows. :shruggy:

Dick has a lot of cores and is a good guy but I have found Scott's carbs work better out of the box as well.

Speedfreak

Hopefully I will have nothing to complain about.  A lot of guys on Moparts swear by Katter's work as being the best, so lets hope it works out.

Thats surprising since Scott Smith is a huge person over on that board too!
