No personal experience with em but I know a lot of guys that run short course off road racing use a GV unit behind their 3 speed auto's. They stand up pretty good under those conditions so I doubt a street car could break one

I don't know that I'd agree with that  :icon_smile_wink:.  Like the Cat in the Hat said, "It's fun to have fun,but you have to know how.  I would agree that modification will amp it up though. :D
BTW, very nice Cuda.  :yesnod:

If anyone's still reading this thread..  I'm going to be switching to a taller highway gearing for my eventual goal of running an open road racing event.  My question is I just installed a mildy higher stall torque convertor which works great with the current 3.55 gearing, will it be ok to keep this with the taller 2.76 gears I will soon be installing?  I assume it will help get the car moving faster and be ok, just want to make sure everything I do to the car will work together properly

If your stall is in the rpm range where your new gears will be for cruising, then it could start acting funny. Meaning it may run really hot, and be highly inefficient.

local boys have been running 8,75 in 9 second cars for years without any problems. one guy even put one is his 65 stang because theyre cheaper than 9 inchers. never heard anyone break one yet. of course, with slicks and transbrakes, or just plain stupid driving, anything can be broken. but 8,75 is one of the best rearends made and in road race/rally car style driving it wont give any problems if its built right.

can's believe i haven't seen this before, updates seem to be farther apart than in 09 though

i think moser makes its own 8.75 now thats lighter and stronger than the original

my long term goal is to do drags and open road events, just swap the rear gear and unbolt the front sway bar, although i suppose the torque convertor would be a pain with all10 bolts and a starter...
then the cam wouldn't like the convertor much...........

sounds like i need another car........... guess what wife...........  :slap:

Do rearends typically fail in the same places that ones used for drag racing do?  I realize a weak link is a weak link but are the stressed areas the same?

No, they don't typically fail in the same manner. Drag racing tends to shear parts because of the high rpm, sticky track. Broken u-joints, broken pinions, and teeth stripped of ring gears are typical drag racing failures.  High speed turning venues do not have the shock loads but do tend to have dry or flooded bearings which leads to blown seals and brinelling or possible bearing siezure. Overheated fluid can also thin out and reduce the fluid film on the teeth interface and lead to heat affected zones.

Tom doesn't tend to sugar coat his opinions much.

Chryco Psycho

my 71 Charger has the 2.76 gears + the 833 od with .71 OD ratio which drops the gearing to effectively 2:1 in OD so the top speed is well over 250MPH theoretically

Of course, liftoff occurs around 180 so...   ?? :icon_smile_big: :icon_smile_big:

Not according to Petty !!
as for broken diffs the biggest porblem I have had is with the spider gears in the sure grip so yes I would say the weak link is the same . the ring & pinion are less liekly to chew thenselves apart I would think
