That thing has been for sale for quite awhile. It was on Craigslist in New Jersey about 6-8 months ago for 25K IIRC. I'm really quite surprised he has a title for it.

I used to live in New Jersey and if he has a valid New Jersey title that is pretty much as good as gold. Near impossible to get if you don't have one even with the vin tag in place.

So I'm sure that importing this Hemi car to Washington would be a disaster.

Where I live, the car would not be inspected if on antique plates, so no issue.

But again, what's wrong with the car, otherwise?

It's definitely not a hemi body.  That's one thing wrong.

How many car grifters have patience?

Long con:  take a basket case B body.  Weld in a #'s matching cores support and trunk gutter, install dash.   Use spot welder, factory techniques.  Return car to the elements for a year or two.  Sell car on flea bay for big money.
Mopar forever!

6bblgt

for 1968 the stamped core support & trunk lip numbers are NOT the partial VIN like 1969 & up MOPARS

so, body numbers B8X120608 do NOT equate to XS29J8B120608 :slap:

the only evidence in the pictures as to the subject car being a "real" HEMI car is the freshly installed "K"-frame & the HEMI power brake set-up, both bolt on parts (it probably WAS a HEMI car)

Yes.  I can only imagine the reaction I'd get here in Nevada trying to title that car with no vin on the dash.

Not necessarily, I live in western WA and I sold my 73 Cuda, no fender tag, had a 72 Challenger dash pad with the challenger tag, door sticker in place which matched the body numbers which matched the title. He in turn was trying to sell it and had it inspected by WSP. They ran the numbers found the Cuda legit and left the Challenger tag in place and applied the original Cuda numbers to a new tag and placed it on the cowl next to the stamped numbers. He had absolutely no trouble selling it.

Great detective work!  :scope:

Me having a 68 Charger this is how the numbers are represented (also mentioned above).

Fender tag = SO(Sales Order) number(6 digits).
SO # also found on rad support and trunk gutter but not on VIN plate.
On rad support and trunk gutter there's 3 characters prior to the SO #. Ass. plant, model year and car line.

This example B8Xxxxxxx
B = Hamtramck
8 = 1968
X = Charger

So this clown types in the SO# of his 68 Charger fender tag/body in the eBay VIN field as to pass it off as the actual VIN of the car. So it looks like it's "numbers matching" to the uneducated eye.  :smilielol: :smilielol: :smilielol:

I wonder if he/she realizes it and hopes that a potential buyer does not or just doesn't know how 1968 numbers are used.

6bblgt

the bigger problem, as I see it, is he OBTAINED a title or transferable registration for XS29J8B120608, a car that never existed

You could apply for a state issued VIN.

What has happened in the past on some '68 back Mopars;

Process started for State issued VIN at local DMV / BMV.

Car inspected, usually by a LEO.

NICB contacted to look at the original insurance records & tie the SO to a VIN.

The old records are on microfiche, so it can take a while since it is a manual search for the SO number.

Once the original VIN is known, it is then checked to see if it was stolen.

If stolen, you lose the car.

If it comes back clean, your state can issue a state assigned VIN, some states use the original VIN with a state prefix, but not all of them.

Lots of trouble & possible loss of your purchase too.

Case in CA a few years back, 1968 Barracuda was being sold online with a 1969 dash installed with the VIN & title.

The NICB alerted the CHPs who then investigated it via search warrant. The original VIN was determined by the NICB by using the body numbers. The numbers came back clean - not stolen. The CHPs went back & confiscated the dash VIN & title & gave the owner a form to fill out for a state issued replacement VIN.

SO, If he has the SO.# is on Title instead on VIN# how do we know it really is a hemi car? I don't see the boxed in reinforced leaf springs? One more question, isn't the SO# the same as a VON # (vehicle order number)? LEON.

Alaskan_TA

No other way to know what it was except as outlined above, major crap shoot. Personally, with a bogus title I'd stay away based on that alone.

SO for 1968 models - http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/images/TSBs/1968/D68-25-1%20page5.jpg

VON starting with 1969 models - http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/images/TSBs/1969/D69-25-1%20page4.jpg

It seems pretty straightforward to me, if the v.i.n. on the title for a '68 matches the body stampings, you have a bogus title. What else do you need to know?

I agree.   Their are too many important questions that can't be answered from the posted information.  The hemi only frame clues are a big one that get's my attention. :scratchchin:
The trans cooler is intersting but I have not yet heard that it was for the hemi option only.  The K frame looks out of place with the rest of the cars condition.
No vin tag turns this car into scrap -or a parts car- as far as I am concerned. :Twocents:

I went ahead and asked the seller about the vin, here is his response. I am going out on a limb here, but I am guessing he was not an English major.

It's hard to tell from the picture I see if the booster is mounted with the offset brackets used for the hemi cars. :scratchchin:

The k frame looks kinda clean in the middle of a different kind of -patina- :lol: under the hood. :slap:

I like how the Fender Tag says "CUSTOM" in the top right corner.

Is it even a rebody at this point? This is another level of fraud. The whole notion the turd shown earlier was even a Hemi car was based solely on its K frame (we didn't see the other mods apparent in any pics and he never shared photos showing them). Then the fake VIN generated by applying 1969 model year body stamping rules with the hemi motor code is just creating a VIN number out of thin air.

I noticed they didn't show any shots of the VIN tag, but I think I see the white "chrysler" letting in some of the pictures. It would be interesting to see a VIN tag made with the fairytale VIN number matching the body stamps.

The rear torque boxes or reinforcements you can buy & weld in yourself, I know, I've done it. The ones on this car don't look factory but aftermarket, just my opinion. :scratchchin:  :shruggy:  LEON.
