1971-72 Charger Hidewawy Headlight Relay question?

Could a three way 12volt on/off/on toggle switch be used to operate the hideaway headlight motor?

Say you were not worried about the factory relay and just wanted a toggle with a in-line fuse?

I have a 73' for the hideaway conversion and it would take sometime for me to be able to purchase the re-pop factory wiring relay.

Thanks

Yes you can.

Fogot to attach the diagram on the last thread. You don't need to use the factory relay:

Use a toggle sitch takes the same job than get the full installation, just without the trigger signal from the headlights dimmer/light switch thought

Nacho...thank you man. You have saved me again.

Until I can afford the correct wiring I will get a 3 way toggle switch and mount under the dash.

The 2 motor wires on the end...middle tab for main power. Could I run main power with fuse right from the batter like a car amp?

Or could I run from the fuse box?

Many thanks Nacho !

Just edited the reply a bit with the diagram and opinion. Check it and will notice make the job with the toggle switch and with a Relay will take the same so I would go straight for the relay (bosch). Just one wire difference between both.

You can make the harness by yourself.

Well, I have a toggle and fuse holder already. I was going to try this until I get all the correct wiring harness parts and the relay. The motor to middle harness, to firewall etc... :2thumbs:

Glad I can do this with what I already have until I obtain all the parts.

Nacho...yeah...I had all the parts for free in my spare parts box. I saved a connector with wire from an old  Battery Tender for my Harley Davidson and it is the same connector as the headlight motor ! Ran that to a 3 way toggle that I had and ran a power wire from battery with fuse connector that I had.

Well, I am 45 and when I die and my wife sells the Charger the next guy can make the wiring factory exact !

These hideaways work awesome ! Is it the norm for the motor to be fast? I mean no delay !  They open and close like butter with the flick of the switch !

For me...I love my 73' Rallye with 71'-72' bolt on body mods !

The toggles give it that 1970's Americana FTW muscle car vibe... :2thumbs: Same as the matte black 71' R/T hood that I have on IMO.

Thank you for the help man ! For years you have helped me !

Several on youtube. You can check also 70s since they are electrical too ( same 71/72 setup ). 68/69 are vacuum. They use to be slow and mostly of the time not synchronized side to side.

What did you do with the bracketing and bottom bumper reinforcement ? ( asked on your other thread, I guess better reply there being a body question )

I like the 71 hideways design, not so much the 72. And even I like the original Charger idea being concelead, I'm not sure would make it on my 74. I don't have the money for those at this moment anyway, but still having the money can't say would install hideaways on my car.

The only NON 74 stuff I have on my car is actually the 71 variable speed swiper witch.... oh and the R/T badging, but thats a diff deal since they got them on all 3rd gens assembled in Venezuela because were marketed like that

Yes they are the same than the distributor plug and also used on trailers. They can be found on trailers hardware at parts shops I think ( never have searched it personally but have read about LOL ) I bought on line a wiring loop for the bulkhead charging parallel path and found it as a polarized quick disconect link. Several wire sizes and lenghts for the loop.

The connector itself calls SAE

Yeah Nacho...I put the 72' bumper in complete. I did not use the bottom bracket.

My motor turns on/off fast and in sync. Wondering if I am getting to much power to the motor with using the toggle?

Now when I order the relay..I will...just was anxious to make these work while I wait for the relay, do I just run a hot wire from the headlight switch to relay ?

I will have to get some pic's posted. Yeah I ditched the 73' Bumper and filler, just used the 72' with the 73' brackets.

I don't think you'll have to worry at all. You can't put more power than the car produces LOL

Everything is pretty much explained into the diagram I posted. Green wire from the headlight circuit ( between headlight and floor dimmer switch ) will just trigger on or off the relay to open and close the doors. Won't suck any load from that circuit.

Blue wire actually is the power for the system. It comes from RUN circuit to make work the system just while car is in RUN. This will allow to keep doors open ( after turn on the lights in RUN ) when car is shut off and lights are turned off, to service the lights or wash the area, but can feeded from ACC circuit too. Unless you want to heard the radio while working on them which in ACC will close the doors too LOL.

Breaker or fuse to protect it? The advantage of the breaker is will reset by itself after the problem is solved.
