K member, body bushings replacement

I ordered some new poly ones and I'm gonna try to replace them next week. Has anyone here done this on a 73-74? I can't really find any videos or info on these. My plan is to put it up on 4 jack stands on the frame so it's parallel to the floor and then have jack with a wood block under the k member for support. Loose 1 side and then replace one at a time before going to the other side. Or should I loosen both side some?

& Should I take the tension off the torsion bars too?

Any tips or things to watch out for would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

You got the idea right. First thing is supporting the body on stands so you can lower the K frame, then remove the tension from the torsion bars. You will need to loosen all four bolts so the k frame can drop enough to get one side out, but only change one side at a time. With the body on stands, use a floor jack under the K frame to lower and raise it. There will be shims between the bushing and body, clean them up and put them back where they came from. How about the torsion bar cross member bushings? Should replace them too.

Yes. I believe I had to unbolt that when I did my 73 some years ago.

Well it's done and it's even better than new.

Good job! I am sure you will enjoy the more stable ride. I just did a complete suspension, brakes, and steering rebuild using all poly bushings on my 73. It cruises just as stable at 120 as it does at 60.

I noticed when doing this bushing job that there was some kind of metal debris shield underneath on the drivers side rear k member but i don't have one on the passenger side. What's it called and does anyone sell them?

I have not seen a metal one? They are usually plastic.

Its metal. Looks like only a driver side on eBay right now. I will keep looking for a passenger side.

Nice pic of that old K frame! Did you keep it?

Nacho-RT74

the K frame is from VegasNick's car. He wrotte up a nice thread about his car mods on General Q&A section, although the pic is taken from another website he posted his job.

My 74 didn't get it either Paul, and no one assembled in Venezuela. Not sure If I will add it thought. I'm a stock parts freaky guy LOL trying to find any part my car didn't got from factory in Venezuela and USA cars should get, but not sure on this one
