I was working on the headlights of my '70 Charger and got to thinking about the aero tricks that were done to the 1969 Charger 500.
I've never looked real close at one but I understand that a grille and headlight bezels from a 68 Coronet were used and they were pushed out to the edge of the fenders.
The stock placement of the headlights in the 68-70 and even the 3rd generation Chargers is deeply recessed.

My question:
Was there some sort of special headlight mounting setup for these cars? Did they use stock mounts but with some type of spacer behind them to push the lights out further?

Without putting a tape measure on it, the lights look to be at least 4 inches further forward than a stock 69 Charger.

Now look at how recessed the 1968 Coronet headlights

It is because of this that I started wondering about the 500 headlight mounting.
I'll never own one of them and car show season is fading here so I'm counting on you guys!

70 sublime

I had a 68 Coronet parts car one time and saved the grill with the idea of putting the Coronet grill in a Charger if I could not get a nice Charger grill
The Coronet head lights have a diffenet spacing and the inner light bulb is set a bit farther forwad than the outer light bulb then the Charger has  ( I tried to set the Coronet grill over the Charger lights )
So after looking at some 69 500 Charger pictures it appears to me they took the whole head light mounting part out of the Coronet fender and mounted that in front of the Charger head light area to move them out flush

And since you have a 70 Charger like I do I will let you know before you try
The 68 had the grill type filler piece that went around the lights to make it look like the grill when the head light doors were open
I had a set of fillers and the 70 Charger lights are a different spacing and will not work on them either :(

Thanks, guys.
I have no plans to recreate a 1969 500 look for my car. I was just curious as to how the headlights were mounted so far out to the edge.

I've had this picture saved for a while.

Could be a cheap alternative if all a guy has is a busted up plastic '70 Grill ?...

That is sort of creepy. I can't explain why....maybe because I like the standard front end so much?
Thank you for that though. It is creepy but it looks like Ma Mopar could have built it that way.

I look at it as a "What if?"  :shruggy:

"What if" Dodge had made the '70 500 a continuation of the aerodynamic modifications of the '69 500, instead of just being a trim package for the '70 Charger? :scratchchin:

I think the wrap around chrome bumper kind of ties it all together.
