You can buy the 280/474 cam from your local Mopar dealer as well. Sorry, I don't have any experience with the 280/474 just the 284/484 and the 292/509.

I've run quite a few of the mopar performance cams....       im sure you dont want my honest opinion...

a company that has been around a while you say ?    Well Engle has been around a hell of alot longer than Mopar Performance....      Engle has been around for nearly 60 years...

Why don't the big name company's like summit racing and jegs carry this brand then? I have never even heard of engle before i joined this site.

Don't know ??? but I had a Engle cam in my Olds rocket motor 21 years ago, good well made cam.

Is the purpleshaft 280 474 a good sounding cam and does it put down good numbers?

I think there may be a reason because Engle makes most of their cams to order...    letting you select what lobe designs you want and on what centerline...     specific for you...         companies like Crane, Comp, Edelbrock, Isky, Mopar Performance...     all these companies have a set cam design which they mass produce....      and dont vary....            for instance, you can not get a custom ground isky cam from summit...    Engle cams seems to be mostly all custom grinds (abeit using pre-designed lobes)...    so summit would simply be a middle man and have to charger higher prices...      high prices means less people will buy it...     then in the end the engle cams would no longer be available from Summit...

thats just one idea - i think it makes sense - but dont take it as the gospel truth.

Exactly , virtually all Engle cams are made when you order them so the CL can be altered or you can mix lobe profiles to get the best results

Summit are the high perfromance industry equivalent to Wal-Mart.  Their prices are low on a lot of things but it's because they buy in bulk and beat their suppliers down for a discount.  This isn't necessarily a bad thing but for any place that doesn't want to cave on price or rush production at the expense of quality or caters to custom orders, they won't be a Summit supplier.
Jegs deal with Mopars as a necessary evil to fund their Chevy racing habits. :icon_smile_big: (okay, okay, so Jeggy's been driving a Mopar lately-I was kidding)

TylerCharger69

I used that cam once.....ONCE!!!    It's a piece of garbage.   I switched to the Engle K54

deputycrawford

I custom ordered an Engle for my 383. It wasn't much more money at all and I had it in 2 weeks. It runs absolutely awsome. I will buy another when needed. ENGLE RULES>> :METAL:

Ok, that was overboard but Engle is a great company.
If it ain't wide open; it ain't running.        Rule number one in motocross racing: Pin it; row the gear box; and wait until you hit something.     At work my motto is: If you need me, call someone else.

Until they started Direct Connection, weren't Engle and Racer Brown the two cam makers that Chrysler recommended to racers?

Chryco Psycho

RB was & some were lsted in DC catalogs , not sure on Engle
I believe Mopar Performance cams are ground by Isky now

Ghoste

I just checked some old tuning tips from the late 60's that I had here and it looks like Racer Brown and Isky for most cams.  The 67 Hemi WO Super Stock cars had a RB or Engle cam recommended.  There may be others but it looks like RB was the cam of choice for them then with Iskendarian as a second choice and Engle was in there for a couple. :shruggy:
