Take a look at the fusible link.  When one burns up it's usually pretty obvious.

id toss a fusible link at it. they seem to be common to go out on cars i own, and they're only like 5 bucks. I keep spares in the trunk.

Yeah, but sometimes there is no visible signs at all, seen that in the past.  I will check it when I go and get a battery for the voltmeter today.

Does the starter relay have to have a clean metal to metal contact to the firewall?

No, you don't need chassis ground to make it works

Okay here is the skinny.

Power to starter, power to starter relay.  All gauges work.  Battery showing 12 volts (i know I need to charge it, but it should crank the starter even a tad, let alone gimme some "clicks").

Starter will not turn over.  Won't click.  (man I need someone else to be here to help me find this gremlin).

Any ideas to throw out?  Oh yeah.   Shifter selector lever is in neutral.

Jump accross the two large wires at the starter relay, if it cranks the starter is good.

Using a test light, see if there is power in the yellow wire at the starter relay when the key is in the crank position.

Then hook the test light to the positive battery terminal.  The other small wire at the relay should provide ground for the light when the transmission is in park or neutral.

It's not a midlife crisis, it's my second adolescence.

crawl under and make sure your neutral safety switch is plugged in...had mine come off onetime and about went nuts trying to figure it out....
Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,
Johnson County Sherriff painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,
well him and my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound.....
