Looking at my pics from the 1st Mopar Nationals, I also had these two wing car pics jump out at me.  The first one just because of the green.

From the same event was this blue Hemi Superbird from Texas.  I had other wing car pics but these two caught my eye.

That show we drove up in a R4 red Daytona with white interior, and white tail stripe. It was a real rust bucket. In 1982 we went in the Q5 500.

What I remember about the Superbird was that when we were out at the proving grounds, we were explicitly told that NO ONE was to make a full pass on the oval.  You were to make a half lap and pull into the infield.  We were standing there when that Hemi car came down the turn and into the straight and you could hear him put his foot into and someone near me said something like, "he's gonna go for it".  Well, he did.  Those Texans made a full lap around the oval in that Superbird and all the Chrysler officials just stood there and smiled.
I don't know if they had prior permission or if there was fallout for doing it or what but I do remember how impressed everybody was.

Well, I'd be lying if I said it looked like he was making a full speed all out pass.  He wasn't wasting any time, that's for sure, but he wasn't trying to break the track record either.  No matter, seeing a Superbird going by on Chryslers oval was a treat.

69_500

If I'm not mistaken there was a Daytona that made a pretty full speed blast that year as well, and went off the track into the grass in one of the corners. I do believe that John Pappas has some video clips of it.

Ghoste

I have that video but I'll have to watch it again.  For some reason I'm thinking that was from 83 or 85.

I don't think so.  I won't be able to get to the dvd player until tomorrow at the soonest most likely but as I recall,
It starts from halfway down the straight and begins at a dead stop.  The car takes off and as it's going around the corner, someone near the camera (I think it was John), says something to the effect of "he just wiped out" or "he's going to wipe out" or something similar.  Then you sort of see a dust cloud from down at the corner.

69_500

It might be from later on, but I know its at the Proviing Grounds. I thought it was 81, but it wouldn't be the first time I was wrong.

Ghoste

I didn't get a chance to watch it today.  But I will if for no ther reason than to look at a dvd about Chargers.  :icon_smile_big: :icon_smile_big: :icon_smile_big:

69_500

I can't even recall which of his DVD's its on though. I think its on the wing cars one.

Ghoste

It could be on more than one.  I was sure it was on the Charger one or one of the Nats ones.  I suppose we could just ask John.
I'm off Friday afternoon anyway so watching a bunch of them will give me something to do.
