johntpr

It's a 440 car with Hemi in it

nascarxx29

The buildsheet for that car wasnt there. But it has the L 440 vin .But another sheet was found in the car that was reunited.Strange thing on Joes daytona it has the hemi torque boxes etc hemi details like it was a factory intent to be a 426 daytona.Joes car is a known wingcar club car in 79.Joe got the car in the 80-s.And the car sold new in NJ

The car was for sale locally @ Black tie classics , the car was for sale and was represented as an orginal Hemi car . I called there many times and e-mailed stating that the car is a fraudulently represented as a original Hemi car . I often ponder why someone would add all that chrome crap , orange fuel tank , and basically a Pimp My ride to a car like that ??? Then cant understand why the car wont bring money ???????? Heres to Joe , remove all chrome crap and come clean on the 440 car with hemi in place presently . Larry

Ghoste

I believe there are a fair number of other cases of 440 4 speed cars getting Hemi torque boxes and such.

FJMG

Wasn't there a green, green, blk hemi 4-spd that was missing the torque boxes from the factory, but had them added during the 80's?? I think the thing with these wing cars is that as more and more cars are researched and documented, we are finding that there are few, if any, modifications that creative performed (or Chrysler on the assembly line for that matter) exactly the same from car to car.

Anyone notice smashed rear valence in area of back-up lights ?

nascarxx29

I didnt recall seeing any damage on rear valance have to go back and look at ebay pictures.Another thing I remember on this car is the octagon replacement grille screen. But last inspection sticker was 1971.I saved the newspaper article from 1986

Can we rename this site  www.pickapartdodgecharger.com

There should be a sticky at the top for a continuous running thread called "Pick Apart this Aero Car".     ::)

Joe's car is not really to my personal taste and the ISCA show look has not aged well.   That said,  he did the car the way he wanted to twenty-five years ago (or more).   Hard to fault him for that.    If he is serious about selling, I think he would do a lot better getting some of the big chunks (underhood and wheels) back to stock looking.

It still looks damaged in other photo , but I will take your word . Heres to Doug , this car is the best of best and should bring one million dollars , thats what the current owner thinks it worth . They say the elderly don't have a crack problem !

If Im not mistaken the daytona is also painted in lacquer.Misha body shop did the body and paint on the car. Many years ago and the car still kooks good

Gorgeous ride. Its just like what I'd do if it was my Daytona. Drop a HEMI in it, and have fun. You can go to shows and see wing cars restored to factory specs all day long. Why not keep one in the condition it has been in for the past 25+ years? Just like how your car is Doug. I say never change it. It is what makes it unique.

daytonalo

I friend of mine and Dave inform me the car needs a resto and De-puff Daddy work all over it , the current owner thinks it worth 250k , more like 125 -150 tops , needs 50 put in it ,and still has non matching motor .

Slower and in english please.

I agree with the 125-150k number and NOM, but how do you figure it needs $50k put in it?    A couple weekends, cans of wrinkle black and a case of Krylon semi-flat and it's good as new.

hemigeno

Actually, the ad says that the original (assumed that means numbers matching) motor and transmission go with the car, as do the original wheels.

nascarxx29

Like Joes other cars they to were retro custom as the daytona .Taken to the world of wheels car show in PA.Chromed custom interior and paint and that seems to be his prefered style from the 80s time period he was building his cars .He also has 70 B5 hemi cuda a panther pink 70 V code challenger 426 hemi
Joe Gerdelmann. He had a custom 71 road runner rat rooster 426 custom paint and interior daily driver.I know of a 1of 2 67 white hemi coronet convertible. That used to be on custom car show scene.

After being drafted in 1956 for a two-year stint in the Army, he built his first Chassis Research Dragster in 1958. Ran the car until 1962. Held various track records at:

Vineland Speedway Atco Dragway

Island Dragway Vargo Dragway

Capital Raceway 1961 Daytona Beach Speed Week – @176 MPH

First Car on East Coast to use Parachute

1962 built Chassis Research Dragster and installed 2 Hemi engines in it. Won best Appearance and Performance.

1962 bought Connie Kalitta Bounty Hunter

Records – 15 Track records in 63-64 from Orange, MA. To Miami, FL.

ET – 8.21 @ 191 MPH

Ran car until 1965

1968 Bought Ken Fuller Chassis and installed Supercharged 426 Hemi. Ran 11 Dragster circuit with Eric Fooder as Driver. Raced from Canada to Florida held record of 7.6 @200 MPH.

That's exactly how I read it. Although it's confusing once you read the questions:
Quote
Q:     hi is this a factory 426 car, if so is the original motor and drive train in the car...
A:     No, it was a 440 and the engine blew. In 1974 a new 1969 motor was installed...

Other than some extra chrome in the engine bay, what else really needs redone? I'd be doing backflips to start with a car that nice vs some of the $50k (Barra)cuda convertibles I've seen for sale. Here we have people making Hemi Daytona clones for $$$ when this guy took a real Daytona and made a clone. That's gutsy! :D

I can't say that I agree with this though:
Quote1 of 503 produced and only 60 still exist.

Was this an original 4-speed car? If so, why'd they remove the original tans?

Troy

My opinion is this: there are only so many of these cars in existence and few that aren't rusty or wrecked (or so clean they're hidden in an airtight vault somewhere). I'm the type of person that will skip right by the nitpickers and buy the car/part out from under them. Of course, I can't afford a Daytona in any shape but I'm always willing to get the best that I can. There doesn't seem to be much to complain about on this car that can't be easily unbolted and replaced. If the guy expects more than the market will bear then he can either lower his price or keep it. It is that simple. Pointing out incorrect wheels and chrome hood hinges is hardly going to change his opinion of its worth. As the saying goes - when it's yours you can make it any way you want.

Larry, it would probably take just as much time to convert your clone back into its factory-intended configuration as it would to take that Jeff Phillips car (from 1985 and considered quite stylish then) back to original.

Is jail time appropriate for your car's "desecration" too?   :shruggy:  ;)  :coolgleamA:

BTW, I'm not slamming clones, only trying to make a point.  I still cannot begin to understand why you see fit to :RantExplode: every car that was customized back when the standards were vastly different.  No, it's not my taste at all, but it's not like this car's restoration was finished yesterday using all that chrome, etc.

Out of curiosity, what's your opinion of Mr. Angry (Mike Musto's BullRun '68 Charger)?  It's been customized too - should he be jailed?  In 20 years, a resto mod might be just as much of an oddity as Joe's Daytona is to us today.  Heck, a factory-correct restoration effort like I'm trying to do with my Daytona might be considered passe as well.  Times change, so do styles.  Give it a rest.

How about Joe Dirt.  He had a nice Daytona -  :icon_smile_big: :icon_smile_big: :icon_smile_big:

ALL I'M STATING IS THIS , THE CAR WAS FOR SALE A BLOCK FROM HOME FOR 250 K !!!!!!!! NO SHIT IT DIDN'T SELL, SIMPLY PUT IT HAS BETTER CHANCE OF SELLING IF IT DIDN'T LOOK LIKE WILL CASTRO GOT A HOLD OF IT !!! THATS ALL . IF YOU SEE NO PROBLEM WITH IT , YOU SHELL OUT 250 K FOR IT !

Aero426

If Will Castro got hold of it, they would have spray bombed the interior white and put DVD screens in the custom headrests.

daytonalo

Well its close , just different era !!!!!

And yet the beat up Big Willie 440 daytona brought big bucks.Joes cars are not everybodys taste .You got to have one to do one .This one was off the road in 1971

69_500

Why are you going to visit him?

Not sure why someone would up and sell all of their cars, but then again that is exactly what my dad did too.

To each their own. Say what you want, but its a beautiful car. Its a daytona, its a 4 speed. And it is something I don't have. A REAL daytona. Yeah i could build one, but it still wouldn't be real.

nascarxx29

Not the case with Joe and his cars .But Ive seen a longtime friend of the family who had a B5 440-6 4 speed superbird. He bought in 73 .And sold it in the 90s .He wanted something different.Another friend had a B5 440 6 pack automatic superbird traveled all around and all over .Got to the point to many trophys.Done all the shows .And sold out a bought 2 vipers.Who knows there reason .My friend had his daytona since 78 .Called and told me its in Hemmings

If I wanted a real car , I would have bought Dave's for 120k and been done with it ! I only invest in real estate and cars that will APPRECIATE ! NOT DEPRECIATE ! . My car might not be authentic , but I'm sure a properly built Hemi daytona 4 speed like mine will bring a min of 80K , and I will only have 35k in it . Larry

69_500

Ah so you think that a Daytona will depriciate huh? I doubt it, I hope it does, but I doubt it will.

Huge difference in a clone and a real Daytona though. Doesn't matter to me how nice a clone is, or how well it is to a real one, there are things that make it different. For one, VIN, Fender tag, and such. So no matter how nice a cloned car is, I wouldn't drop $80K for it. That is just my opinion though. NOw would I drop $250K for the one for sale now? No, but can't flog the guy for asking. People ask $150K plus for some cars that aren't worth $45K if you ask me.
