I was planning on using some left over PPG Clear to spray my new fuel tank with but dont know if it will stick to it very well and not peel or lift and let moisture get to it.
What did you guys use to coat or paint your fuel tank with???

I have heard of zinc coating the fuel tank as it is correct and protective.
Could be wrong though.

When I bought mine they told me it was coated already, however looking closely at it there is no way of telling it has a coat - possibly clear coat. Any how, I bought spray paint "chrome" which is not - just a bright silver and it looks natural. The clear, I think would eventually peel off. I dont have a picture with me at work to show you, but it does look bright and reflects the road on the tank.  Oh! clean it with acetone first and try not to touch it with your bare hands once you wipe it. |

Same with mine. They said it had some kind of coating on there already and I never worried too much about it. Now, it's mostly covered with oil and trans fluid and road grime.

I shot mine with that Tank Tone that Eastwood sells. I haven't installed it so I can't say how well it will hold up.

I left the inside of my new gas tank alone. I did treat the entire outside of the tank with the black rubberized spray undercoating- but a word of advice...make sure no gasoline gets on your newly sprayed tank or the undercoating will just wash right off! I learned that by accident. If you get a new gas tank, make sure to get a new sending unit, straps and a pad to go with it! You'll be glad you did. Bradley  |

I painted my '68 GTX with the tank tone paint mentioned previously, and it held up fine. I bought a new tank for my '64 Belvedere, and I was not pleased with the coating the manufacturer applied. It wasn't an even coating. I removed it from the bottom side of the tank, and then I waxed the tank about twice each summer. It still looked like new after 4 years.

Glisten PC made by Por-15. It is a clear coating that turns rock hard and is suppose to be chip and scratch resistant. I just put it on and never used it before so time will tell.

The original tanks lasted 20+ years, and that was during every day driving. Considering that your not going to drive your car every day, the replacement tank will probably last twice that, so why worry about it? Just leave it as is.

Well yeah they last for 20 years but if your restoring a car you don't want it to look like shit in a couple years either. If you are replacing one for a just a driver then yeah who cares. |

I used the Tank Tone on the gas tank in my 70 SS Chevelle...it looks like crap after 5 years. If you want to keep the natural look of the tank, coat it with Boesheild. You can get it at Sears.
