Look for the VIN to confirm it is the original engine. VIN stampings on 68 blocks are hit and miss. If the VIN is stamped on the block, it will be by the oil sending unit on the back of the block.
Seeking information on '69 St. Louis plant VINs, SPDs and VONs. Buld sheets and tag pictures appreciated. Over 3,000 on file thanks to people like you.

The spot listed by 69coronetRT is the best spot, but I heard it can be found on the passenger side framerail as well.

The block casting numbers for all RB, B, and LA engines are found on the left (driver) side of the block.  In addition, on 1968 and later engines the numbers stamped on the lower rail of the engines right (passenger) side match the last 8 digits of the cars vehicle identification number.

In '68, the body stampings (core support, trunk rail, fender tag) won't match the VIN, starting in '69 they will.

The block stamping in the OP decode as follows:

PT383 2415039

PT= Plant Trenton  Built at the Trenton (Michigan) engine plant
383= Displacement
2415= Build date March 8, 1968
039= Sequence number, the 39th engine built that day
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.
