Moving to Ohio

I had a question for everyone that lives in Ohio. Do you like living there and what is there to do? It looks like I'll be moving to Cincinnati, Ohio next June. I graduate college in May and then I'm taking a job with GE.

I live here - have most of my life. If you work at GE you'll likely be within a few miles of me. Where are you coming from?

This is a pretty good area for a lot of different activities. We have a world-class zoo, a cool aquarium, Kings Island, and several neat museums. For sports we have a couple of semi-professional teams - Reds baseball, Bengals football. For more sports value though, we're close to 11-15 major colleges (depending on what you want), several national champion high schools, and two of the Reds farm teams (Louisville is favored to win the championship this year). Basketball and football are the two biggest amateur sports. The Kentucky Speedway is within an hour, Indianapolis and Mid Ohio tracks are within 2 hours, Edgewater and TriState have drag racing, and there's a bunch of oval and dirt tracks. For whatever reason I'm usually bored though...

The weather is ok - mostly spring and fall with a short, cold winter and a few weeks of really hot, steamy summer. The scenery is decent. There are lots of fun back roads just a short distance away. Traffic isn't horrible as long as you can avoid I-75 and any of the bridges going into downtown (which you can working at GE since it is north of the city). I am NOT a city person so if you want to know the "in" places to go or the best building to rent a loft at then I can't help. Overall, it isn't a bad place to live and I haven't found a place I like enough to move to.

It seemed like a pretty nice place when I went up there to interview. It'll definitely be a change from Oklahoma, but I'm looking forward to it. One of my friends that is graduating from the University of Michigan also got a job there, so at least I will know one person.

I'll probably end up living some place close to GE. They showed us an apartment complex somewhere (I got turned around pretty fast) that most of the new hires live, but I'm going up there sometime next spring to scope it out.

The job I got involves me going to school and getting my masters degree while I work. We have the choice of Ohio State or the University of Cincinnati. I'm leaning towards the University of Cincinnati due to my friend from Michigan causing me to be biased towards Ohio State.  Haha.

My brother goes to Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute in Wooster. He talked about his professors trying to get him to go to "the other OSU"
I am either going to go that route and do something with cattle, become an engineer, or become a mechanic. Any way I am going to OSU. It rules!

My other brother went to Miami University in Oxford. He majored in Microbiology, and just got into University Of Toledo Medical College, which ment he had to turn down a job with P&G.

Either way you go, they are both good school, my mom went to UC, and she liked it.

Troy summed it up nicely.  It really is a nice city - typical Midwestern.  While not unique to Cincinnati, you can find places to live that are either rural or urban (depending on your preference) and still be within a reasonable commute.  For the most part, barring the usual construction delays, it is easy to get around town.  Especially compared to larger cities (Atlanta, Detroit, Chicago, etc.).

Plenty of racing facilities, like Troy mentioned.  And the Mopar Nats are within a couple of hours' drive.

The downtown area has been slowly dying and there really isn't a whole lot to do down there (with the exception of professional sports).  Although, admittedly, I'm not a city person either.  And I certainly don't know of, or care, about "hot spots."  I would describe the area however, as a sprawling suburb.  There is plenty to do.

I also graduated from the University of Cincinnati which is located right in the middle of town.  I didn't catch your field of study, but the University is constantly under construction and has been updating many of its facilities.  Xavier University is also in the center of town.

The weather - you can have all four seasons...in four days.  You'll get a taste of it all.

I live on a farm a ways out of Cincinnati, but not more than a 3 hours drives.
Where exactly are you going to stay around Cincy?

Oh, I almost forgot the car shows...

on any given night of the week from about March through November you can find at least 3 cruise-ins. There is a major (all makes) show about every weekend. You can be in Carlisle in 9 hours, MoparFest in 5 hours, Monster Mopar in 5 hours, Mopar Nationals in 2 hours, and nearly every Chrysler classic within 3-4 hours. There's "Somernites Cruise" (SomernitesCruise.com) in Somerset, KY once per month and several groups caravan down there from Cincinnati. If you head over to Milford on the east side the Steak-n-Shake cruise attracts 400-600 cars every Friday. The James Dean Rod Run is just in Indiana if you like street rods. There's a large show in Sharonville (right by GE) in May where you can buy a calendar that lists all the shows for the year.

I live in Hamilton (near ds440) which is just north and a little west of Cincinnati - outside the "loop" highway (I-275) around the city. I'm not from this side of town though and I'm more familiar with the east side.

Bill Allphin from A+M High Tech and Jason from Gunslinger are based in Northern Kentucky, The Paddock is west in Indiana, and Summit Racing, Jegs, Brewer's, and BE&A are north of us in Ohio.

Ohio is not a bad place to live. I attended OSU for a year, so I lived just north of Columbus. And I use the term attended loosely. More like getting drunk and chasing college girls with questionable morals. Generally, wasting my parents money. 

One piece of advice, skip Kings Island and head to Sandusky. You must get to Cedar Point.

this is actually a really good car oriented area , some all Mopar and some mixed makes, it's all good

Cincinnati is allowed to be in Ohio on a technicality; it is actually the capitol of Kentucky. FYI.

Welcome, though, to our great state.

If you want to legally gamble outside of the Ohio Lottery, however, any of our much more progressive-minded neighboring states with forward-thinking governors will be happy to take your money and put it into their economies. Ted Strickland and the boobs that came before him have all contributed to other states taking the casino reins and running with them. We may have the worst governor of any state, ever. Where's George Voinovich when you need him?

By the way, if anyone tells you Dennis Kucinich is from Ohio, they're lying. He's really from another planet. Honest.

Seriously, though, I have lived here my entire life (besides the military) and I LOVE Ohio. Especially NE Ohio. Thanks for joining us.

As soon as the kiddies grow up and are on their own i am moving probably Kentucky, Tennessee or West Virginia not Florida just south of ohio to get away from the corrupt idiots that run North East Ohio..............

I live 40 miles East of Cleveland. Cleveland kinda' Ghetto.
There a a bunch of really nice car cruise in's up my way. I am about 4 1/2 hours from where you are.
Arizona will be my home within the next 2 years. Just have to get busy on finishing  my Bachelor's degree.

I live in Huber Heights...to close to Dayton and I say Ohio is as good as place as any to live. The housing is cheap compared to most other states.

MSN or Yahoo had a story recently about Ohio having three of the top five US cities with the worst economy or highest unemployment (something bad). I can't recall the three names right now but Cleveland and Cincinnati weren't among them.
