Hey gang..
Anyone have some pictures of their Superbird or Daytona with a factory (OEM) direct drive fan and spacer (thickness?) I'm looking to get one for my Daytona. I have an ok aftermarket fan with a 1" spacer, but prefer to find OEM parts for that year application if at all possible.

Thanks.
Troy (aka Hemi & 4-speed-less, just for you Pete) :icon_smile_big:

Troy,

I don't know if there are any Daytonas or Superbirds that came with a non-clutch fan spacer.  Superbirds were supposed to come with the Max Cool package as standard equipment, and should have had the 070 clutch.

The only Daytonas I know of that did not come with the Max Cool package (054 radiator for '69 and 070 clutch) were the 440 engine 3.54-geared 4-speed cars... and those got a "medium cooling" package which came with the 055 radiator but still had the 070 clutch.  There's the one Daytona we've seen photos of which has a 22" radiator which might have had a solid spacer, but that's a rare animal indeed.  As a rule, 440/auto cars were equipped with either the A36 or A32 axle packages (it was "recommended" that all cars get an axle package), but there may have been a very few built without such.  Those are the only cars which might have had a solid spacer, and I have yet to see one in person.

Hey Troy, here's some pictures of stock fan from one of my Superbirds. I've seen on the other post you have about your "Tona" running hot and some have said to run a flex fan IMHO that's the last fan that I would use on any of my cars. In the 1st picture you can see the factory fan has 2 stamped steel plates that sandwich the blades between them for max support ( less flex)

The fan is heavy, so it's balanced from the factory (the weight rivets close to the blade tips)

part number

All my bird's have been in 90Degree stop and go traffic and have never ran anywhere close to 200. Hope this helps Ken

Gene, I can only speak from the 7 or 8 Superbirds i've restored that NOT 1 has ever had a clutch fan installed from the factory. They have all been the fan I posted. :shruggy:

Yet another example of my lack of knowledge on Superbirds... :P

One of the docs I have on 'Birds does mention "Mandatory Max. Cooling Package Less Fan (N51)", and it was my assumption that the same equipment was used in 1970 as 1969.  Guess not.

Ken..
Those are perfect and cool you took one of the part number. The spacer looks to be an inch in thickness.........  OK, my quest for this is beginning. I'll check the fan I have to see if it's like this one or an aftermarket version............

Thanks.

Early Superbirds had the 070 - there was an engineering change to the solid spacer and fan package during production to alleviate cooling issues.

All Daytona's had the clutch.

nascarxx29

I remember seeing some mention of that on some paperwork stating a date .After this date superbird fans had changes made were mandatory.Or something to that effect not exactly sure .See If I can find it

Would be nice to be able to run it with a fan clutch setup... But, the car will dictate that............

Troy - Are you talking about your Daytona? It, 100% should have the 070 clutch and 216 fan...The build sheet will tell you that as well.

Redbird

On Superbirds there is a memo with a date showing the mandatory change from the clutch fan to the solid drive. It happened as a change while production was in progress. A couple of years ago Superbird #107 was for sale on the internet. It was unrestored and had the clutch fan. Both my Superbirds from the middle of production had the solid drive.

Jim, I agree with you on it should have the clutch fan, but I'm fighting down here in the South to keep this thing cool. I have a good 216 fan and would have to get a new clutch, but I don't want to be spending the greenbacks on something I'd be pulling any how. Maybe with the new thermostat and the water wetter, I could afford the clutch-fan configuration (heat-wise). Maybe I should heat/ceramic coat the exhaust manifolds to reduce further engine bay temperatures.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh - OK. Whatever you do you will need to use the Acme suspension system to change out the fan!  ;D

Hey Troy, why don't you just trade it for a Charger 500. There problem solved, your probably wondering why you didn't think of that, huh?  :smilielol: :smilielol: :smilielol:

Good luck, sounds like you've got that problem on the run now. Take care. :2thumbs:

Not all later built Superbirds had fixed fans, Hemi`birds still had a clutch fan.

Interesting, and a good point. The last Hemi I can remember not having a mandatory clutch is a '67.....not 100% sure on the '68's.

I drove 'Tona today to a friend's house and the temp didn't get passed "straight up" on the gauge. It dribbled slightly, but nothing out of the ordinary. Temperature was about 99-100 today when I drove it. It was all neighborhood streets and side streets. I didn't get above 45mph. So, hopefully soon I'll take her out on the interstate and see how she does..... Looks like I'm making progress. There's a club member with a Superbird, so I'll pass this by him as well......  Seems the biggest thing is getting the heat out of the engine compartment. Maybe I'll take out the rear eccentric access hole covers in the front wheel well and see if that helps.

Cheers,
Troy
