Can someone post a picture of where the hidden VIN is on the trunk lip? I can not seem to locate mine and I want to make sure I am looking in the correct location.

Thanks!

If you have an early build 68, it may not be there.

The VIN wouldn't be stamped on the trunk rail of a '68; the SO number would be.
Seeking information on '69 St. Louis plant VINs, SPDs and VONs. Buld sheets and tag pictures appreciated. Over 3,000 on file thanks to people like you.

Ghoste

I thought it was just the earlier built ones that had SO numbers (before January 69)?

you have to lift the rubber up .. which is stuck down .

December 21st, but I am going to look again. Do you have a picture that shows where yours is on the rail? I saw the picture above but that does not tell me where on the rail it is. How many inches is it from the lower left curve in the rail.

Thanks,

mine was where i pointed to with the arrow  :yesnod: ... have seen one stamped  much further up before also  , can't remember correctly though but i think you can see the indentations of the stamp  on the underside  :scratchchin:

Have you looked for the radiator support stamping?

I found the stamping on the trunk lip, and yes the stamping on the radiator support is clear as a bell and it all matches up.  :2thumbs:

Tan top---the tip to look on the underside of the lip for the indentation of the stamp is what led me right to the location....thanks.

So what is your guys opinions on putting on a new full quarter. Does it hurt the valve of the car to no longer have that number there?

Back N Black

I don't think the trunk lip is included with the full quarter.  :shruggy:

gasoline_24

The number is on the trunk gutter and not part of the quarter.  You can replace and still use the original trunk gutter.  That is what I did on mine.  Here is a pick.  The gutter is in grey and the quarter is in the black it came from AMD.

Ghoste

And for the record, I believe that yes, it very much does affect the value of the car to have that number there.

jerry

back in the day many quarters were completely cut off and replaced with salvage yard parts as was the radiator supports. have seen this many times .i didn't see much concern with body shops back then with the mangled sheet metal trying to save the numbers.so if you find a nice rust free 69 R/T that has been sitting in a garage for 30 yrs and the original owner says it got wrecked and insurance co had it fixed when it was 2 months old and he wants $1000. for it now just to get it out of his garage are you going to say will sorry the radiator support or quarter numbers don't match and go buy the rust bucket you looked at .some people think these cars were never new and they also think they were never wrecked and fixed.i didn't see any 69 chargers in 69 that were rust buckets but i did see lots that were wrecked and put back together if they were not totalled. these cars are 38 yrs old and very few are virgins.until $$$$$$$$ came in to play with these cars a good title and vin on dash was the only # that concerned most people.now most are brain washed. not all but most. :popcrn:

troy.70R/T

I see from the pics that the new quarters do not come far enough to allow one to remove that part from the car. In my opinion that is a good thing. I would like the numbers to be there on a car I bought as well but I also would not pass up a Charger that had been parked for 30 years for a $1000.00 eithier. Even if it was a 318 that was rust free missing the drivetrain and the whole drivers side quarter. I just kind of wanted to know what a new quarter covered and what people were doing with that number if the new quarter did go that far.

gasoline_24

That area was not part of the original quarter.  There was a trunk gutter that was welded to the quarter.  That is the grey primered portion above.  The trunk gutters are repoped.

Ghoste

jerry, regardless of how we bought them years ago, can you deny it's a fact today?  If you went to buy the 1000 dollar Charger and he gave you a choice of that one or an identical one in every way except that it had all of the numbers and paperwork and cost 500 dollars more, which would you pick?
I am hardly the matching numbers purist and I am forever bemoaning the loss of the days when the only ones buying these cars were guys wanting to have fun, not build their invesmtnet portfolio.  I completely get your point but whether we like it or not, the money did come into play and numbers make the car worth more.

jerry

i want you to take this as humor but seeing that there are probably only 3 rust free 69 chargers with the sheetmetal they left the factory with i doubt this guy has 2. :lol:and i know where 1 of the 3 is and has been sitting inside since 1972. R/T SE auto dana red with black leather. :2thumbs:

Then there is the question; Did all of the cars leave the factory matching? I own XP29F9B421282 (at least that is what is on the dash and B/C sheet from the back seat) But the yoke, tag and lip show 421182. Maybe the int. was changed but I have owned it since 86 and previous owner had it for a few yrs and neither of us changed int. so who knows for sure, I sure don't.

What year? On the '68's the vin did not match the radiator support stamp, trunk stamp or fender tag. If it is a '69 or newer then you have a conundrum.  :P
