All Superbirds should have one since they had either a 3.55 or 3.54 gear ratio as part of the Superbird package.
Power steering coolers were part of the Axle package with these ratios.

Not to Hijack the thread, but anyone have one that would like to sell?
I need one for my "bird!

Yup - All P/S cars with axle ratios from 3.54 to 4.10 got one....or should have got one. My survivor '69 Hemi-X 4.10 never had one - factory boo-boo   :o  Both my 'Tona's have one....One is a 3.55 - the other a 4.10

Here is one of a Daytona - Same for Bird.

My Hemi-X does not have one either but it was supposed to. All my other Hemi cars that I have and/or had with P/S and 3.54 or higher do. It is not a Superbird thing - My old Hemi-Bird did have one.
Here is a pic of a survivor 440 Bird. I will find some pics of my old Hemi-Bird and post later.

I'll quote the now-famous line that "I've not seen every car built", but I have yet to personally see a survivor '69 Hemicar with an original power steering fluid cooler.  All the factory graphics/documents I've seen call out for a cooler on the Saginaw pumps, but none are shown or listed in any of the parts books for the "Federal" pump used on Hemicars then.  I've seen mid '70s (72? 73?) Federal pumps with a cooler and bracketry, but to my knowledge (which definitely isn't infallible) the '69 Hemicars did not have a power steering cooler on the Federal pump they were supposed to use.

That being said, the point made about using a cooler on 440's with 3.54/3.55/4.10 axles is correct since these were all equipped with Saginaw pumps in '69.  I think the concern had to do with the additional RPM's these cars turned at highway speeds.  They could have geared the pump down by using a larger pulley, but that would have made it ineffective at low engine/vehicle speeds - which is where drivers needed the assist the most (parking, tight maneuvering, etc.).

I've read debates on this issue before, but I'll stick with my current opinion until shown why it's not correct.  Yep, I'm stubborn that way...   :P

70Sbird

Geno,
Help me out here. the Saginaw pumps have the "oval" shaped neck and the "Federal" ones have the round "neck" is that correct?
I have a PS cooler that I got from a friend of mine that he said was for a 340 TA Motor (not sure if thats Federal or Saginaw). I was going to try to use it on my 'Bird but it doesn't fit, the bracket is not correct for my application so I'm assuming the one I have is for a Federal pump.
The one I have is also the same one as the one that was sold on Ebay (not the $700 one).
Here is the one I have, does this look like it is for a Federal pump?
Thanks for the help
Scott

Scott,

Your Saginaw and Federal descriptions are spot-on, AFAIK.  I honestly don't know too much about the PS coolers that can't be found in the Parts Book or Engineering Illustrations.  Both of my cars never had one (1 Hemi, 1 440 w/ manual steering), so I'm not much help in figuring things out on what you have.

That date code does sorta looks like it might be 1682 (with the "2" only partially visible) which I'd think would be from 1972 or maybe 1982, but it rings a bell that there might be a second date codes stamped on it somewhere which could clarify things.  Could be wrong on that though.  I have a somewhat-complete set of engineering graphics for 1970 that I'll try and dig through to see if the 340-6 cars had anything spelled out differently for them.  1969 A/B-bodies were pretty clear, no PS coolers except for the Axle-package Saginaw cars.

Hemi_tyme

Here's a picture of the cooler for the Saginaw pumps that was used on the superbirds

70Sbird

Ken,
Can you read the numbers stamped on the mounting bracket of that cooler?
That is the one I'm searching for.
Thanks
Scott.

P.S.Is that a pic of your white 'Bird in the newsletter with the original owner?
If so I was parked next to you and didn't even know it!!!

T/A and AAR used same pump as Hemi - different pulley - all used the P/S cooler.  2nd pic

Jim,

That's what I get for not looking at all your cool E-body stuff any closer, right??

I just took a quick jaunt through my '70 paperwork, and the Xerox copies of the pertinent pages are nearly impossible to read/decipher.

Lot of help I am, I know...   :P

I'm still pretty convinced the '69 Federal pumps did not come with a cooler.  Answers on '70+ stuff will have to come from someone a couple of paygrades above me.

Gene - I was just outside thinking about this and I was going to add this before you posted. You may be on to something on the '69 Hemi stuff. Like I mentioned earlier my 4.10 69 Hemi-X did not have one. It is an earlier car and at the time I put it down to it's early build or a factory boo-boo. I need to delve into this a little further on the 69's. I'll ask Mr. Survivor to dig thru his database of research.

i have a 73 440 hp motor and it  has a cooler on the saginaw pump

Scott, I'll get the numbers off one of them when I go to the shop later and will post it.
As for my white bird and the original owner in the newsletter, Doug took some great pictures for me and the owner. I haven't seen it yet...still waiting on snailmail.
BTW Nice bird you have there. I did look it over but, I never did get a chance to meet you.
