Orange Bird

I thought a few of you may appreciate some progress on my project. The photos are not necessarily in order but you will get the jist.

Enjoy. Just so you don't get lost with all the different colors, all the metal was stripped bare - everywhere! Then it was black epoxy coated, then white epoxy sealed (black sticks more and white makes orange color pop). Same thing with the top coat but there are a couple extra steps other than the body work in the mix for the exterior color and that will be a couple coats of urethane surfacer and then the white epoxy sealer.

I am currently finished w/all bodywork and have stopped at the point where I am blocking out the first application of surfacer. If all goes well, I am shooting the car between Xmas and the new year.

Thank You. I can say with absolute conviction that no single nut, bolt or screw will be untouched and detailed. This is my version of a 10K paint job - booth cost included. It will be nice to finally focus on only one thing.

Wow, your car looks great. I can't wait to see the finished product. I noticed the pics of the Dana and leaf springs restored and ready to go. Did you buy new springs or restore and re-arch your originals. If you bought new what brand and where did you get them.
Thanks

Orange Bird

The springs are the HD springs for Hemi/440 applicationd (one extra leaf on the one side) I believe they are the MP springs and got lucky with a deal online. I blasted them, epoxy coated and painted chrysler base black. The springs are almost finished in that I need to pickup the little rubber insulators on top of the spring that the band clamps. I will do that when I put the thing on the lift. The Dana in in and bolted where it won't go anywhere but everything needs torqued. I installed it to gain some floor space. I have more space now that the fenders, doors, trunk and Dana are installed. I don't need the extra bench either for all my painted bolts either. I will block the first application of surfacer this weekend, I hope, then I start prepping the Airgrabber and get it to the same point where the rest of the car is now.

I updated the album again. I finished block sanding the Slick Sand for the first time. I addressed a few high/low areas I did not think the next coat of Primer would cover so I applied an intermediate coat of HB primer to the areas in question. When I block them back out, I will HB primer (PPG K38) the entire car again and reblock. One step closer.

I dont have much time with Christmas approaching, however, I am making it. Tonite I have a Boy Scout committment but will take the time to vacuum the dust off it (mentally, I think it will keep the dust down), vacuum the floor, blow it off and wash it down. Then tomorrow I will shoot it again with my next coat of PPG K38 HB primer. After that, I will guide coat again and start blocking again but this time w/400. If all goes well, I should have that finished b4 Xmas. I will be off that week and it will be orange by the Jan 1. So Close.

I dare say the next time you see this car it's going to be orange.

PPG K38 is applied and waiting for Guide coat and some 400 grit.

Other pics loaded if you follow the link above but its basically different angles of what you see here.

A little more progress but I am playing catchup from the Blizzard in VA last weekend and its 24" of snow. I lost the entire weekend helping the neighborhood w/ my tractor. I am off this week (so to speak) and working toward paydirt.

Anyway, hood was painted underneath and I just finished the topside. I am going in the morning for the black epoxy as I ran out. I will blow off the stripped hood and shoot it. Minor bodywork then Slick Sand and K38 HB Primer. If all goes well, I will have a hood installed Tues. I will block the entire car Tues/Wed. Then rip off paper and retape, wash floor and walls in booth reskirt the thing and I am still on for orange by the first.

Well, after all the snow, cold, rain, travel, overtime, life stuff, I am back on track. This is the white epoxy coat to make the orange pop. This means I have up to 7 days till final top coat. If all goes as I think, I will shoot Sunday.

Orange Bird

Another productive week. While it was still taped up, I color sanded it. I left a very slight orange peel finish. All block hand sanded w/1500, then 2K, then 2K wet foam DA pad, then 4K DA wet foam. I then 3-step cut, polish and glaze buffed the entire thing. Tape up for hood treatment then rebag car and shoot. I think it looks sharp.

Its been a long haul, yes. I do other side work to fund this project. Its a little farther along than pics show but not by much - hoses, radiator, drive shaft, wires, small stuff. Cars are usually the last thing I get to. I just finished a 13 month restoration on a guys car who I work with and now I am finishing a car I worked on a while ago. I still squeeze in time for this thing but family, work and other projects seem to refocus me at times. Now that its in the position its in I like working on it more because you see real progress.

Yep, know thefeeling all too well. Seems I have to do more to others cars than my own to earn the money to resotre my own. then, I find I have no more time/drive to complete mine. Vicious circle.

That looks like a car in a yard I took a few parts off of for my 1970 Roadrunner project, down south of Culpeper?  Leons.
