The car on display in his museum is most definitely a HEMI car and it is also a 4 speed car to boot.

nascarxx29

The red hemi 4 speed car came from my town.Garlits got it from Bill Weisman here in NJ.Garlits got off my other friend the Connie Kalita bounty hunter dragster he owned since 1962.Now in the Garlits collection. The guy Leo I know did the paint and body work on that 500.If I run into him he has pictures of its resto.Ive seen before

500Jon

Hi NascarXX29.

Tried to send you a private message but your inbox is full.
Do you have anymore info on the DG500 since you posted on this thread?
Was it a green 440 4-speed car with black interior prior to the black/red paint scheme?

Thanx from 500Jon

500Jon

Hi again Nascarxx29,

Did you manage to speak to your friend who painted the Don Garlits 500 yet?
The Ertl model seems to be painted a bronzey red metallic?
The pictures I have are more like the Mopar deep red non-metallic.

The red on my 500 is a deep red too.

How would I go about contacting the great man himself?
Some Folks are saying he still has the Crower-cam-500.

I'm still keen to find out either way.

Best wishes 500Jon.

Ghoste

I thought the 500 he has now was acquired from someone else?

500Jon

Hi AeroFolks,

Any more news on the Don Garlits 500?
Does anyone know where the car is?
Have I got it here???

Would love to repaint my 500 in those colours anyway!

The red is very dark like a Maroon.
Think I've seen a 69 Charger in that shade.

Thanx 500Jon

Hi Aero's,

F8 green is a very hard colour to match with modern green metallics.
Looks like I will paint the 500 in black to see how she looks.
Then I can put the red/maroon back on afterwards.

500Jon

Hi Nascarxx29,
Any more news on Don's Crower-cam Charger 500 please?

I think the Ertl model is wrong in many places with the paint scheme and red color shade too.
My 500 had a completely red rear panel with the window plug in black!
Anyone knows who commissioned the Ertl model?
You can see (just about) the differences.

I'm not sure whehter to go all red or all black first???
Probably all black first, (that's what wifey wants) then vinyl overlay the red!

many thanx 500Jon

Anyone got anymore leads on Don's 500?

More red like this methinks?
This is closer to the red on my 500.

Just a quick look thru my list it was in Hot Rod july '69.
That is not necessarily it's first appearance.

-edit- Popular hot rodding aug'69. Beginning to look like it's a late '69 release.

69_500

So a July 69 magazine would be on new stands in what, March/April right? Which means photo would be shot about 4-6 weeks prior that that? Or was turn around time back then even longer between shots and publishing?
