I had the same issue with more than one California Highway Patrol Man back in the day.  I felt that a couple of the officers were just using the front bumper issue as a reason to stop me so that they could get a better look at my Superbird.
I actually started carrying an information sheet on the Superbird that I would pull out and show them when stopped......
Now that impressed more than one officer...................... ;)

In those days LA's finest would pull you over for anything and everything especially if you were on rookie turf...ie just east of van nuys in la crescenta. I often had the 'cop' ters hovering over me when the cops on the street would pull my charger over for a burnt out plate bulb. In that link below the bird are two friends of mine in the hemi demon. Van Nuys Blvd was a great time.

I wonder if our paths crossed back then.  I was from the La Canada / La Cresenta area and had a new '68 R/T (yellow/blk top & stripe).  I used to work at a Standard Station in Tujunga.  Sometimes guys would see the R/T parked there and would pull in to try and get a race going.  I obliged them on more than one occasion.   Bob
