November 67 build date if that means anything.

from what I have read, unsilenced air cleaners were not supposed to be on AC cars....should have dual snorkle style....but, I could be wrong....link below for air cleaner usage

I thought Dual Snorkel on Gen 2's were California models only. I could be wrong, but thought that was the case.

Thanks for the link!  :2thumbs:

It looks like my air cleaner was primarily used on 383 A-body cars, but they say that it was "also used on early 1968 B-bodies". The smaller unsilenced air cleaner that we are used to "is on all 1968-69 340, 383 and 440 4-Barrel except early 1968 models"    :shruggy:

Perhaps others here have more to say?

seen a number of supposedly unrestored /restored / original / original one owner ...   68 440 B-bodies   coronets / gtxs & chargers with this air cleaner ,  with & with out A/C  ,

from what it looks like , & whats was documented ! the really early build 67 cars  , had that larger  unsilenced  A body style air cleaner ....   not sure when the cut off point was  & or what assembly plant fitted what & to what SPD & was it just because there was a shortage of the 68/69 unsilenced style or using up / made too many of  the larger A body style  , also  seem to remember seeing  more  Coronets & GTXs with this  style ,  that's in its self don't mean  much ,  :shruggy:

My car was originally an A/C car.   I dislike A/C so it stayed off during the rebuild.

Anywho.....this is the right air cleaner cover, build sheet verified.

I was curious about this also. As far as I know, the air cleaner was not on the broadcast sheet.

I thought the '68 parts book may help, but it does not. There is no mention of with/without a/c or early/late production.  :shruggy:

Here it is anyway. Air cleaner is called a "cover" in the parts book. First column is A body, then B, then C body.

My 69 has the original unsilenced air same as above.  From my own research into A/C cars I don't believe there was any difference between A/C and non- A/C air cleaners for 68 and 69.  There does seen to be a correlation between early and later build date 68's and the air cleaners.  This is just from my own amateur research and the few local 68 Chargers that I know of.  Both are A/C and have the factory unsilenced type air cleaner.  YMMV

the parts catalog DOES shed some light on the subject (early VS. late)

the page shown above is from the April 1968 version & it is stated that it replaces the December 1967 version (anyone have another version)

14-29-7 AIR CLEANER, COVER: #2946 172 w/o snorkel is used on: (& is a new part # as of this 4/68 version)
A-body LS2 & BH2 w/340 4bbl
A-body L, B w/340 4bbl, 383 4bbl (there is an additional two-snorkel AIR CLEANER, COVER shown for 383 4bbl #2899 133 * same as B-body 440 4bbl)
B-body R2 & Road Runner w/383 4bbl
B-body w/383 4bbl, 440 4bbl (there are additional two-snorkel AIR CLEANER, COVERs shown for 383 4bbl #2863 307 & 440 4bbl #2899 133 B-bodies)

C-body P & D w/440 4bbl (based on the parts catalog, there are 3 other AIR CLEANER, COVERs for this application)

Yes, the AIR CLEANER, COVER section of the PARTS CATALOG make ZERO reference to Air/Conditioning,
it also makes ZERO reference to California's "noise reduction" requirements.

this version of the PARTS CATALOG does show the introduction of the smaller unsilenced air cleaner between 12/67 & 4/68 - at least in print

I have a copy of--Chrysler Muscle Car Parts Interchange Manual 1968-1974-- Paul Herd--

In the air cleaner section there is --no mention or reference --as to whether or not a car has AC ----or not.

For 1968 440-ci cars it shows the part number 2946172 for all 440's--(unsilenced)-- except california.

For California 440-ci cars the part number shown is--2899133-- which they refer to as the "california sound-reduction package"--"Dual snorkel design".

Again --no mention or reference about AC in the section about air cleaner interchange.

I'm surprised that at this point in the life of this "musclecar" hobby - this is a question w/o a clear answer.  :shruggy:

according to the Parts Catalog there is only one of the "larger" diameter unsilenced air cleaners for the 1967 model year and it would be nipple-less (or did a part number get dropped by January 1967?)
the  early (now it appears almost the first ~4+ months of the year) 1968 HP A & B-bodies would have the "larger" diameter unsilenced air cleaner with a nipple connected to the oil-fill breather

What combination would put a "larger" diameter unsilenced air cleaner on a '67 440HP b-body?

Here's a "larger" diameter no snorkel air cleaner on an unrestored '68 Coronet R/T

You guys are right.   I thought it was noted on my broadcast, but I just checked, and no.   Must have read about it someplace else.
