Tire Tracks: 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona 071010

Dodge produced only 503 Charger Daytonas for the 1969 model year, making the cars highly prized collectors' items today.

Credit: Eddie Huffman Sadat Khan's blue-and-white 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona may look like the same type of car Level Cross-born NASCAR legend Richard Petty raced in the early 1970s, but the color is a bit off.

"It's not the Petty blue," said Khan, a Burlington physician who brought his Daytona to downtown Burlington in June for the annual show by the Alamance Region chapter of the Antique Automobile Club of America. "It's a shade different from the Petty blue."

One other thing is off, too — the make and model.

"Most of the people that see me driving ... they think that it's Richard Petty's," he continues. "But actually Richard Petty drove the Superbird, which was a Plymouth version of the winged car that came out in 1970. In '69, when this car came out, Petty threatened to leave Plymouth if they didn't give him something similar."

But NASCAR quickly leveled the playing field by mandating smaller engines for the extremely fast, aerodynamic cars, and they disappeared from the track, according to a 2009 story in Popular Mechanics.

"The aerodynamics (NASCAR) felt were an unfair advantage because of the cone in the front and the big wing in the back," Khan said.

The wing added stability because the car would lose traction at high speeds. But the buying public was skeptical of the car's practical use and appearance. Sales suffered and additional safety restrictions were implemented that sealed the fate of the Daytona, according to the Popular Mechanics article.

As a result, only 503 Daytonas were sold and the cars are now highly valued collectors' items, selling for more than six figures. Khan, who declined to disclose the price he paid for the car, bought his Daytona from a collector in Montreal who had restored it to stock condition.

"My father was a big Chrysler guy," he says. "I actually am a Mopar nut."
