Here's a shot of my 1970 Satellite convertible coming off the trailer.  As you can see, I have a bit of work to do, but I have high hopes to eventually turn this into a lemon twist yellow convertible "Superbird".

Original California car, 43,000 miles.  383 column auto.  Bench seat, black top and interior.  Air, power steering, brakes, top and windows.

I'd GTX the hell out of that thing... A 'bird...not so much

Why? it's only a satellite . i can see if it was a real roadrunner conv. i birdie replica is worth a lot more then a satellite conv or a roadrunner replica and a lot cooler too.  :Twocents:

"It's only a Satellite...",  " It looks like a RR clone from here...",  " You're right - never noticed the black tape stripe on the hood...", " It's not as if you're hacking it up..."

Yes, you're right - It IS only a Satellite.  Had this been a real Road Runner, I doubt I'd be doing ANYTHING but keeping it stock!  Of course, had it been a real Road Runner, I would have had to have paid 30 grand MORE for it.  The guy I got it from was selling it for a friend who has his home foreclosed upon, and was liquidating toys to save the house.  He told me that the fellow who was "restoring" it was the one who originally bought it, and he had factory ordered the hood, RR taillight bezels and dual exhaust.

Me?  I don't really care.  It's going to take a few years to turn it into a SuperBird, so I'm going to drive it for a few summers looking (mostly) like a convertible Road Runner.  All the parts that come off will be carefully stored, in case this thing ever skyrockets in value, which I doubt will happen.

Besides - this car is my automotive "Holy Grail", so I don't see me selling it...ever.   :icon_smile_big:

Yeah and screwing a nose cone and a wing on a convert is just going hoist its desirability ::)

you can't compare a custom birdie conv to a rr or gtx clone . apple's and oranges . that's a special ride

You have no idea how different it is riding in a convertible superbird vs. rr/gtx convertible. Yes the rr/gtx convertible is cool and recognized by people, but drive a convertibird around you have ppl swerving at you on the highway taking pictures and you are recognized everywhere. Plus its just plain awesome LOL.
Personally wouldn't mind having either one, its just a preference of the owner and budget lol

Lighthorseman

Had a chance to get the grille and front bumper put on, as well as doing a little wiring, and general tidying...the sun washed out the picture a bit though.

Budnicks

Good luck with your 70 Superbird Convertible clone project or Satellite either way you go, Just do what makes you happy, not everyone will agree with it, but it's yours to decide how you want to build it... It's a Mopar so it's good in my book.

The next step...I found a used fibreglass nose, headlight buckets, pivot brackets, spoiler, valence and latch tray.  I had not intended to start acquiring parts THIS quickly, but a decent deal came up so I jumped on it.

Here are a couple of pictures...

Lighthorseman

I declined the fibreglass Z-braces and Superbird hood, as I'd like to get a metal pair of braces, and use the Roadrunner bulge hood.  Still lots to go...headlight doors, braces, fenders, hood, etc., etc., etc.

...But it's a START.

A roadrunner hood is much wider than a coronet/bird hood and requires major alterations to work. It would be much easier to graft the bulge onto a bird hood. My air grabber hood on my bird was a major project. It's an original roadrunner air grabber hood that was narrowed and stiffened to fit the coronet fenders. Of course the previous owner did all of the work, thank god.  ;D
