Fuel pump leaking oil

I am on a hunt to fix oil leaks. 1972 LA 360 engine. There is oil around the fuel pump and the front of the block, passenger side. I am using a polished Carter mechanical fuel pump. It looks like the oil is coming from the gasket that seals the two halves of the pump. The pump body can be clocked. That is where the oil is the thickest. The pump is only 1 1/2 years old. Any one have a Carter pump leak like this before? Or should I keep looking for the leak?

it is simple enough to pull the pump , far easier to clock it , but the oil cannot come from between the two halves only fuel , oil can come from the gasket against the block or sometimes the pivot pin for the lever , you can put some silicone over he pivot pin ends

I would suspect the valve covers or intake manifold before the fuel pump. I have seen fuel pumps that had loose mounting bolts that leaked so make sure thay are tight.

It's been some time since I started this thread. I took the fuel pump off today. Oil is coming out of the vent hole at the top of the fuel pump body. Should the vent hole be sealed from the crank case? Looks like it is there to open the top side of the pump diaghram to atmosphere. I can blow air in through the vent hole and it comes out from around the lever arm. Engine oil that gets in to the fuel pump body can come out through the vent hole. Is that normal?

Oil should not come out of the weep hole

do you have a PCV system , it could be pressurizing inside the engine & pushing oil out the hole

That is what I would think. 12 month warranty is up. Only have a couple thousand miles on it. I am going to call Carter/Federal Mogul next week and see what they can do for me. Probably nothing?

I do have a PCV valve in the valve cover. Connected to the back of the intake manifold. Breather in the other valve cover. Sometimes I question wether the PCV valve is working properly. After coming home from some high RPM runs, the engine will leak more oil than it normally does.

Could be a faulty PCV valve.  Quick test is to pull it and see if you can hear it rattle.  If not, chances are it is gummed up pretty good and stuck closed which is causing the excessive pressure pushing the oil to places where it should not be going.

Are all PCV valves the same? I mean do they all work the same way? This one looks like something I have not seen on a Mopar before?

Talked to Carter tech help today. He said the pump is trashed. The seal on the pump shaft is shot.  Nothing he can do about it since it is out of waranty. Told him I am not.impressed with Carter since it only lasted a couple thousand miles.

I think I might try a $20 stock replacement type Airtex pump from Auto Zone.
