I am just curious how many miles to the gallon everyone gets here.  I have a 66 charger with 383, and I am getting about 3.8 miles to the gallon.  Is that about right, or is there something to I should be doing to get better milage?

Thanks
   Paul

umm... that is terrible, are you sure you are doing your math right?  I have a 400/4bbl (600cfm) and a .484 cam and I get 11-12 mpg in my ramcharger (4280 lbs).

The '69 383-4V Charger I had years ago managed 14 to 16 highway, even with a heavy foot on the gas. Is your's stock? You don't drive it with the accelerator all the way down & use the brakes to adjust your speed, do you?  :D  Sounds like either your math is off, or there's a problem with the fuel system/carb somewhere.

Also, I was thinking it could be even something as simple as a fuel leak. I once had a gas tank that leaked if I filled it more than halfway. MPG was horrible until the gas level was below the leak.

On the way down to Carlisle, PA last year I averaged almost 15mpg with my 440...on the way back up the hills it was about 10 :)

Paul1966, it sounds like someone is taking your Charger for a "ride" when you are not around.  :icon_smile_big:
Check your computations again and check the tank for leaks. From literature I have on Chargers, a stock 1966, you should be around 13 - 14 mpg.

With my '70 Charger, '68 stock 383 Magnum and 323's I get around 14 mpg, and have got a best of 16 highway, going the speed limit.

my 493 stroker with 3.91s gets 10mpg, if your getting 3.8 something is seriously wrong, you havent got a leaky tank have you?

Any chance your odometer is way off because 3.8mpg is just horrible.

does it still have the stock points plugs and wires??, timing retarded with the stock plugged air filter and a carb thats never ben rebuilt? i would suspect that if you really are getting 4mpg that this car runs verry poorly or you never let the gas pedal off the floor.

Wow and I was disapointed in my car getting 15 mpg last year on the way home from the Monster Mopar Weekend in st. Louis. I had averaged 19.5 mpg on the way to the Mopar Nationals last year.

I consistently average 12 MPG with my Charger's 440 4bbl.

I may need to put a charge on the battery though, to get her started after I get back from the war in April!

You got something wrong going on. Is your speedometer correct? If the gears and tires are not set correctly for your speedo it will be too far off to really calc. mileage accurately. Get on a highway that has mile markers. Say at mile marker 10 for instance your odometer is at 5 tenths, at mile marker 11 your odometer should be back to the 5 tenths. If it's not your odometer is not accurate.

Mileage for our cars should be around 10 MPG give or take a little. I have never calculated mine. Don't want to know.     :rotz:

I've never really checked but my 67 with a 383 and 4:10's, I can tell you DOES get better than that!

69charger2002

you should get over 10 mpg even with a heavy foot. my 440 gets 9-10 even with my foot in it. either your speedo is off or you are miscalculating somehow

Is the real question how many miles to th gallon or how many gallons to the mile he is burning? Sounds to me like he is spending about $1.55 per mile in that car not including any other maintenace he will have along the way.

paul1966

Thanks for the replys.  Dang, I must have somthing really wrong.  If there is a gas leak will it be really noticeable?  Because I have never noticed any gas leaking from inder the car.  I was talking to abuddy of mine, and he asked me about the choke being stuck....I will check.  If it is not a leak, or the choke....is there anything else I should be looking for??

Thanks again
Paul

Your entire fuel system should be checked. Last time I saw this was a bad fuel pump. At idle it was fine. Above idle it would bleed and squirt right out of the pump onto the ground. The owner never saw it because he would idle in and out of his driveway and here in hot Florida the gas would evaporate quick and leave no trace when leaving his house. I just noticed how clean his pump was and how dirty everything else was....

9 mpg city, moderate driving, haven't taken road trip yet to see what highway mileage will be.  Changing the cam has cut down on my gas station stops..............LOL.  Will have paid for itself shortly just in gas savings.

Whew!  OK Guys my calculations were off.  I am getting 10 miles to the gallon.  Checked for leaks...and there were none. Anything I can do to get better than this?  Thanks again for all the replies.

About the only thing I can think of is always drive downhill.  ;D Seriously though 10 MPG is why they don't make them like that anymore.

Yep, you're right about where you should be.  It's time to quit thinking about miles per gallon and focus on fun per dollar now.

check your fuel line to your fuel pump because one day i was getting terrible gas mileage and relized the clamp was loose and that the fuel was just shooting out the hose and evaporating away....good luck

Tuning , try more timing with a shorter advance curve , get the carb tuned perfectly
