69 DAYTONA

...his wife passed away several years ago

...probably his old Daytona for sale

...he was at the MOPAR Nats a couple of years ago

...about all the "Big Willie" news I am aware of

rccommunications

I am in the process of doing a three part mini-sries on BW for a national magazine, and possibly a book, BW was in the hospital earlier this year and is now in a care facility, unfortunately not doing well

BigBlockSam

hey guys , yea its not good news about Big Willie . Jack Struller , the presidemt of our race club USR spoke to him a couple of weeks ago. this is what je wrote on the UNITED STREET RACERS facebook page.

"I just spoke to "Big Willie" President of the Street Racers out in Los Angeles!! He's at Picture Car Productions. They're having their MOPAR meet. Adolf Couger from Passaic, NJ put me on the phone with him!!! His words to me were "We are all brothers in street racing." I waited 30 years for that conversation!!"

then he told me that willie lost part of his leg to sugar and that he couldn't lift his arms anymore , made me very sad . although i've never met him he has meant a lot to me .  i've been drag racing since the 70's and understand his message.

i wanted him to sign the dash on my daytona but i guess i waited to long to get in touch with him . i wish him Peace

Wow, sad news indeed. Heart wrenching. I miss owning a Charger and racing anytime I had the chance. Thanks for the info Rene...

I have mopars and pontiacs as well. GTOs trans ams and birds and bees. Mopar and pontiac actualy go together rather well if you think about it.

Ghoste

Said it before and I'll say it again, Pontiac were the Mopar Division of GM.

Amazing. After speaking to him on the phone tonite, my heart is hurting for him. He still remembered me, and we briefly chit-chatted. I could tell he was emotionally and physically in pain. He was getting married in or around June, in Vegas. My wife and I planned to attend. Doesn't look like it's going to happen. When he was still healthy, he told me he was going to dance his whole wedding night. I spoke to the nurse as well, tonight. She said his spirits are down.. Way down. I wish there was something that we could do.
I flew him in for his first-ever Mopar Nats in 09. He was amazingly happy. His heart is the only thing thats bigger than his Army Boots !

Here he is with our Cleveland crew in the parking lot. We had no idea what was in store for us that night.

I don't know if you guys know this, but I negotiated with Scott at Supercar Collectibles to make the "Big Willie Daytona's" One way to help him, is to purchase more of these cars from them. The more they sell, the more Willie gets in royalties. This is only a small thing we can do until someone figures out a better idea. He is such a huge influence to our culture.

Is this the car ?? That they made the scale model from...

One of them.  There are three different versions you can get that represent his rides.

Aero426

Willie had three Daytonas.  The two primary race cars (Hemis) do not exist.   The one remaining car (yellow) is a 440 car.  That is why there are three different model cars.

That was a weekend to remember. Big Willie is a super nice guy with tons of stories. I had a blast. Praying for the best for him...

I bought all three and they are displayed at the mopad.  My prayers are with him.

Guys, just thought of an idea. Willie does not have a computer. He has seen VERY few pictures of himself and Tomiko. If anybody has any cool pics, post them. I'll try to print what I can, and we can make a big photo album to send and pick up his spirits. If you have hi-res or nice ones, please email them to me at  sunroof71@msn.com  This will really be a big suprise.  I'll make a new thread.

They closed that down years ago now {or it was last I heard anyway}, mostly people down there are true "illegal street racing" now... Terminal Island was really fun back in the day, It was better than some organised IHRA & NHRA events at times, well not really, but way more laid back & fun... Lot's of gambling & high dollar grudge matches... "I think" Terminal Island is still undeveloped military base, it's been quite a while since being in that particular are of SoCal, I still live in NorCal, just don't travel down south do the street racing/grudge match stuff type of thing, any longer...

Big Willie passed away on 05/19/12 at 5:00am.

We've only talked with him on the phone, but sure wish we could have met him in person. When we sent him some of the 1:18 cars we provided him with, he called back a few weeks later saying he needed more. He told us he gave away all that he had received to the local church for the kids. Big man, big heart, right up to the end. Now he's with Tomiko again, and my he RIP. A true american legend...
