I thought the oil groves were different between small blocks and Big Blocks?

I was told that the bleed down on the race lifter was designed to "soften" a race cam at low RPM, make it more street friendly, but still pump up to full lift at higher RPM. A way to get better street manners from a high lift race cam.

I am going with B-0976 (stock) for my 440 and using Smith Bros adjustable pushrods.   :scratchchin:

went too. Closed the deal

no adj pushrods for me since I already have adj rockers ( PRW steel )

and got 8.5" Smith Bros pushrods, .055 shorter than stock, already mounted on my car

I don't get it... just got my HiLift Johnson lifters and the oil groove looks to be in fact HIGHER than the pic posted by Frank... which by PN looks to be SB ? I thought it was to be opposite ? :shruggy:

SOMETHING IS NOT GOOD.

just installed the Hilift Johnson lifters, and as it must be they began noisy due they are without oil. As far the engine was running the tipical tappet noise began to decrease but NEVER stopped. I have cranked the engine 3 or 4 times, and same tappetting noise.

something is not good or are they like that.

Do they need more preload on adjusters ? I don't think so, because If I'm replacing stock pieces with stock rockers there is not a way to adjust preload

will post a video.

ok I hope it works

SORRY IT WAS RECORDED WITH THE PHONE UPSIDE DOWN... but the important here is the noise!

( wow, what a bad quality record, and is not from the phone, something happened when uploading )

I can't watch imageshack videos on my phone but as for the preload, yes it must be correct. When you change the cam you have to measure for the correct length rod so the lifters will have the proper preload when you tighten everything down.

Nacho-RT74

I didn't check preload because... let's say I have stock pushrods and stock rockers, and I'm simply replacing the lifters for a "better quality ones" but being "stock" replacements... WHAT PRELOAD I'LL HAVE TO CHECK IF THERE IS NOTHING TO ADJUST THERE?

The previous assembly with the replaced lifters was already adjusted on its moment.

I uploaded couple more of videos ( this time with camera in correct position LOL )... one with hood opened and the other one with hood closed... Lifter noise is allmost annoying ( sp? )

Need to say, that when I got these lifters in hands and installing, some of them ( if not everyone, really didn't checked everyone ), had a rattle noise when shake them up and down ( not to the sides though ), like something loose inside going up and down, but since these are noticeably different on how they are assemblied than the rest of replacement stock pieces, never though it could be something wrong with them... if really there is something wrong

Check the size of the oil hole in the lifter. I had a issue with one lifter in my 318 ticking. Found out one lifter was different (similar to the ones you just bought)
See this thread http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,93657.msg1065837.html#msg1065837
I was able to drill it out bigger and it stopped the ticking noise.

But its not a stock cam and you have rebuilt it. You still need an acucrate measurement so that you have the correct length pushrods so that when you tighten the factory rockers down you will end up with the proper preload.

Nacho-RT74

I already got custom pushrods... 0.055 shorted than stock, block decked, then rockers ADJUSTED. If I didn't have lifter noise with previous lifters when running ( Elgin pieces ), why I do have now noise ?.

I just had lifter noise on first start up, but it looks because I had around 50% of lifters damaged, and my mechanic confirmed that when he adjust them. Once engine run for 3 seconds the lifter noise was gone.

Did you use assembly lube, are you certain they are spinning? I would expect to need readjust for new lifters after break-in procedure. Did you start by running @ 2K RPM's for 2-3 minutes?
I see what your saying, you cut the deck and reduced pushrod length but unless heads and valves were new, exact proper length of pushrod could still be off.   :scratchchin:
I feel for you Nacho the engine and bay look really nice!  :2thumbs:  You have had a hell of a time with this build.

Nacho-RT74

but they weren't off with the replaced lifters!!! I mean, why now with suposelly HIGH QUALITY PIECES I have an anoying lifter noise, but not with the regular Elgin lifters ? ( just as stated, starting cold in the morning for some seconds, reason why I'm, changing them ). everything is the same but the lifters.

heads and valves are NEW BTW

No, didn't use assembly lube... everything is fully oiled around. Remember is my driver car, so is allways getting oil all around.

Yes my car was cold, so the choke got in and it was running at around 1500 RPMs for couple of minutes

I got a small decay on oil pressure gauge reading

even the HLJ lifter shows a little bit higher on pic, the seat for the pushrod is at the same height inside the lifter. I measured before install them... put them side by side and then with the pushrods in place to compare. They got me the same height, thats why I didn't added preload to the lifters.

Do I try to add some preload ? maybe 1/4 or 1/2 turn to the adjusters ??

Thanks for your words Neal!

Nacho, why is the oiling groove different...which one is correct for BB?

Nacho-RT74

yes Frank, thats my though that they are maybe incorrect ? but I requested for BB lifters and they sent me these, PN B-0796. I know they are diff than the ones you have ( beside th Race kind difference on the seat ). In fact I gave them my engine specs

I'm already emailing with topline guys and they already replied me. working on this.

( BTW Frank, will need your assistance again. Will PM you on FB )

Ok just shoot me a mssg....makes me wonder if i have the wrong lifters or you have the wrong lifters. I couldve sworn the other ones i had were exactly the same as these, but i got rid of all my old stuff and dont have anything to compare it to.

b5blue

New heads and valves yes you should be good! I can't wait to hear what Johnson has to say!  :scratchchin:

firefighter3931

As long as the plunger is in the same location on both lifters then the same pushrods will work. You need .020 lifter preload. As for the oil band....as long as it is not exposed at max lobe lift..... it will work fine.  :yesnod:

New lifters need to be broken in just like a new cam break-in.....20 minutes at 2000rpm with moly lube. I hope you didn't hurt the cam by skipping the break-in procedure  :icon_smile_blackeye:
