I was thinking maybe Big Bill France, but the photo doesn't look quite like him (Bill had more hair).  You'd think if it was a Ford guy on an espionage mission that ol' Harry would be pictured swinging a 1-7/8" wrench at him.

Apparently it's John Holman (from the Honker II reference), but you had to spoon-feed the hints/answers to me...

The team would get a preview of things to come when it arrived at Road America for its first race. Of course, the name of the car should have been the very first indication of the trouble ahead. John Holman had earned something of a reputation during his trucking days. He was known for being a little too fond of honking his horn. In a reference to Holman then the car would be called the Honker II. Unfortunately, in practice at Road America, it would be the other competitors that wished they had a horn as they would have used it to signal Andretti to give up the whole enterprise. Being more than 15 seconds slower than Bruce McLaren's pole-winning effort in the McLaren M6A, the Holman Moody team would decide not to start the race as a result of not being competitive enough.

Correct, it is John Holman. 

Harry Lee Hyde had a story about his father and John Holman that he told under the tent at Monster Mopar.   It was good, but I did not write it down and I cannot remember what he said.    But it was pretty much in reference to that photo.

I personally remember at the '86 Mopar Nationals that B5 Superbird pulling the B5 Superbird at the host hotel on Brice Road. Now, that was a sight.............

Asphalt Legends sucks.     Guy seems to be a right click saver who offers up low res junk on Ebay.   I bought a few pics in the spring and was not particularly happy.

yes , that's one of the reasons I posted this Bird , because of that fender cover  , have read & seen a group picture thingy of the 70 Plymouth trouble shooting contest ,  but never seen the fender  cover  before

 this site might be old news  , but  this is a good link for  mopar  stock cars ,   over 230 pictures ,    well worth spending half hour or so looking , lots of pictures ive never seen before
