What's a 69 charger 500 worth needing full resto?

Found a car thats really neat. needs to be restored. Has a date coded motor ( 440 ). I am trying to learn all I can on charger 500's . Any advice?

JB400

Wait till tomorrow, you just become a few guys' best friend :2thumbs:  What condition is the car? Any pics? Is it yours?

Shelby67air

Pretty sure going to buy, just trying to get funds together. Been sitting for a long time and I want to restore something neat. Working on getting pics up

Ghoste

Without pics its hard to give a wiw but as far as the restoration, you have found the best resource right here.

TheAutoArchaeologist

Definitely post pictures if you can.  I'd love to see it.

Or I can come out and document it for you.

Value totally depends on its condition and the person buying the car. There may be a higher value placed on a car by a person who really really wants it versus someone who's only looking at it as an investment. But, then, some times there's only so much money one has in his or her wallet. Then, it becomes an instant of adjustment from both the seller and buyers point of view to make something happen.

Oh, and good luck... 500's are very cool............ Of course, you will get a lot of strange looks.............

   :iagree:

If you're planning on buying it, some of the Charger500-specific parts to look for are the grill brackets, headlight mounting panels, headlight bezel-to-fender fillers, hood release lever, stainless steel A-pillar moldings, rear window molding, rear glass, and the short decklid and special hinges. I'd also want to have the fender tag, even if the the car isn't "numbers matching". Assuming ordinary Charger rust, solid frame rails, etc, I'd figure between $15-20K...but more pictures would be nice...

Good luck!   :2thumbs

There's been two on this site for sale for a long time. Look at what they want for those cars and realize they haven't sold before you make up your mind.

Sorry heres another pic

Shelby67air

Thanks for any input, I found the one for $22,000 needing full rest, and has no motor. Haven't seen the 2nd car.  This car is has alot of parts and a date coded motor. Motor was running. original trans and rear. Under 18,000 good? going back tomorrow to look at it with my best friend that does bodywork.

JB400

When you go check on it, take the stuff off of it, and try and take some pics of the interior, raise the hood and take pics, same with the trunk.  Then, try and get the full sides, front, and rear.  Then, we can give you a better assessment.  Money wise, it sounds pretty good.  Depends on what the actual condition of the car is, and what's missing or needs replaced. :2thumbs:

charger_fan_4ever

Looks like the C500 in CT i was considering buying back in the early spring. Looks like it has the same green hood and piled with parts. It was a red car and had overspray all over it.
If its the same car there is no fendertag or buildsheet. It was pulled out of a scarp yard years ago. Passengers quarter and tail panel was cut off with an air chisel. No rear window or trim. I asked about the condition of the rear plug and the seller was not sure.....The no tag thing was the deal breaker for me. At the time is was advertised for $17,500. Amazing what a little piece of metal(fender tag) adds to the value of a car like this.

Here is the original thread with some other pics of it.

I thought the first photo looked familiar, it does look like this is the same CT car, 164196. I'd like to see some picts of the damaged quarter panel, and the rest of the car too. Anyone thats spent time on this board has seen some pretty rough "projects" turned into some pretty nice rides. I think if you're honest with yourself about what you want, and what you're willing to put into a restoration, then do whatever makes you happy.

Not trying to discourage you in anyway, but I will shoot this out there.

I looked into a repro back glass and repro trim for it. Your looking at about $2k right there.

Consider dropping atleast ~$30K into if your doing the whole restoration yourself. If you farm out the work add atleast another $25-30k to that.

I couldn't justify having 50k invested with no pedigree. :Twocents:

This car sold for $65k

Ok, my best friend the body guy said that the car doesn't look to bad for him to do. He likes the car and likes the color. Any breakdown as to color? The current owner said its one of 5 in this color red. Where can I find more info on that? He mentioned winged warriors article that broke down the colors and numbers. This is really cool, like a big puzzle. p.s sending more pics soon

Ghoste

I don't know the article he mentions but it doesn't matter, the car is rare even in the most common color and well worth owning.

And remember, the ones on the 69 registry site are just the ones that have been reported to the site.  The number indicated there could be all that were ever made in that color or just a fraction.  It does give you an idea of what the breakdowns are appproximately like though.
Chrysler didn't track that kind of stuff the way other mfg's did so its a little difficult to pin down sometimes.  We can't even get unanimous agreement on Charger 500 total production numbers.

I doubt only 5 in Red .  If its R-4 the reddish orange color there are alot of those .
if it R-6 Deeper Red they are rarer but i suspect way more then 5

I think so too.  Chris has only had 1 of the R6 ones reported to him but I would bet more are out there.  Danny might know.

Oh, and that's another thing!  Don't forget to register it with the 69 Charger Registry site.  Your info will never be made public but it does really help the entire hobby with things like this (learning the number in a certain color and so forth).  :2thumbs:

Danny had this one marked down as R6.

Is there now a tag or broadcast sheet with the car ?

XS29LA47V21

An interesting topic I think.  There is a couple very good thoughts above, including buying a nice done car vs building for yourself and enjoy it while having a bunch in it.  Historical hobby precedence reconfirms nearly every time......... it is cheaper to buy one done, with the only exception if you do mostly all of the restoration yourself.  Ok, maybe another exception is when they become less popular, who wants a T-bucket anymore or Vcode cars for north of 100-120k anymore, etc, just saying?  It's a hobby have fun, ok I will get off my soap box.

Very generally speaking, 25% of 500s are red, 25% of 500s are green with less than 50% the other range of colors which impact the value (to me).  Alternatively, maybe those percentages are much higher for many years for those two colors available for sale and for color change cars which for these collector cars seem to be hard sellers, while both those traits influence values.  IMO. http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,77912.25.html

I personally believe the value range on these rare cars are as wide (% perceived value) as they have ever been, We all have opinions, 15k is way low IMO if it has all the 500 pcs, fairly complete, minimal rust and clean title.... so I will be a shark and say if you do not want it, please PM me the sellers info if it can be bought at 15k.   I had a similar car a couple yrs ago and the sharks did not get anywhere close to buying it at 15k, I think Stu's price is fair honestly if a 500 builder is what you are looking for.  Not many out there.  I also really like the bug shield car and price for a car keeping as "survivor" as is (ok pull off bug shield).  Not all sellers/collector of specific and rare cars are motivated sellers either which also obviously impact the perceived value.....  Good luck.

Well update; brought the car home saturday in an enclosed trailer, living in CT and with alot of trees around my house and a big storm coming, I parked the trailer with the car in front of my office with no trees in site! Rode out the storm without any issues except losing power. car is safe. Pictures as soon as I get power back.

Another update, went and got the Arizona full quarter panel and seats which have to be restored. Anyone know the procedure for the seats?
Thanks

JB400

should be able to just strip the seats, sandblast, repair springs, paint, cover with burlap, add foam, and then stretch on the new upholestry.  Warm up your seat covers first before you put them on.

Is that a real deal Shelby or a clone.  Looks cool :coolgleamA: :2thumbs:
