Fix for a stripped head bolt?

I'm sneaking in a "brand x" question here. Changing the head gasket on my sons Toyota and one bolt will screw in but not hold torque. It was a bear getting out and I replaced it but upon installation it tightened then spun after about 25lbs.

So is there any kind on semi simple repair without pulling the block?

is it an aluminum block ?  how much torque !! are the head bolts needing to be ??   maybe  heli -coil it ? , what about fit studs  :scratchchin: ,  may be studs first choice if not heli-coil last resort  :shruggy:

Try running a tap through it or tap up to the next size and buy a bolt to match

Must be about mid way down the Pass. side of block on a truck (22RE)? Maybe a car 2.2? The exhaust goes through and around one bolt for EGR. PITA to get out.

Drill out and heli-coil. only way to be sure.

Cast iron block, Cooter close, it's 2nd from last on drivers side (22RE). I was doing some looking around and sounds like Helicoil the only option. well I did fins some other kit but it was $400 :o As it stands now a heli coil kit is still $100 off e-bay

Can't you get that kit from a autoparts store?  I have done that for exhaust bolts for my pickup and I can tell you I really don't want to do that again.  Of course the engine was on the engine stand, last bolt on drivers side. I believe I paid $30 or less for the kit.  Robert

Thanks guys

No one around here carried a 12mmx1.25 kit so had to order it off the internet...$88 ouch! but that should do the trick   :P

...Update, I used the "Time Sert®" system and it worked great, suprisingly fast and easiey than a Helicoil. Used standard bolt and took the 56 lbs of torque easily
