Title: I just know someone must have posted this story, but...
Post by: Ghoste on May 20, 2015, 10:18:31 AM
I can't recall seeing it here and I thought it was a cool story.  If I'm late to the party forgive me though.

Does anyone remember a few months back that there was a picture of a mysterious Daytona on a rollback tow truck... I can't seem to find it.  But it sounds like it might have been this car?

not this car, the rollback Daytona was not even complete, plus it was a dark color car

I think they should have not put the guy's last name in the story. Cause someone likely will track the man down about the daytona

Yes a very cool story and super nice find.  I was lucky enough to see this car up close and talk to the owner.  I saw it last year at the Pacific Northwest Concours d'Elegance at the Harold LeMay Car Museum in Tacoma WA.  Here is a picture of it on the show field.

Very cool story - that is just about all of our dreams I'd imagine.  (well as far as cars go)    But I noticed that are contradictory to what I thought I've learned.  I noticed what looks like a straight hood latch.  I thought they were suppose to be the short one with the bend.  Also, I see the hood bumpers are not painted.  I am not "questioning" anything about the car, just find the differences interesting.

That's the right hood latch (see first photo below).  Standard '69 Charger issue, just without the pull rod.  Most of them still had the little black plastic bushing from the original pull rod which was discarded.

Also, I see the hood bumpers are not painted.

In the second photo, it looks like the top of the passenger's side hood bumper is painted - but the third photo does indeed look like the paint has either flaked off over the years or was not there in the first place.  There may still be some red paint on the side of the bumper, but it's hard to tell for sure from just these photos.  A way to tell for sure would be to pull the hood bumper off its post and look at the metal post itself.  I have seen several of these where the concealed part of the post is a different color.  If it's completely red, then either the bumper was not installed prior to Creative's paint job or the post just happened to be from a car originally painted R4 at Hamtramck.  Mr. Smith (the owner) may not want to mess around with that hood bumper though, because the rubber can be hard/brittle after 46 years.

Speaking of rubber hood bumpers, the fourth photo shows R4 paint on the side bumper.  Most of the ones I've seen were not painted, but these obviously were.

I asked the guy who wrote the article to fix my last name (he even sent me a proof before it was published and I corrected him) and he said he will fix it.

Looked at this car over a year ago just after it was discovered.  It's been known in the wing car circles for a while.  Took a ton of detail photos of the car when it was first discovered so if anybody wants detail shots let me know.

Publishing the guys name is not a huge deal, they have already gotten a bunch of crazy offers on the car and the guy doesn't want to sell it at this time.  Funny part is Marshall, the guy who did the work on it, probably could have bought it for nothing but he didn't want to rip the guy off.  Marshall is a good guy.

So I don't want to belabor the point but just trying to learn.  I was lead to believe that the hood latch was shorter and had a small bend in it.  Yes, the pull rod out and a plug in it's place. SO the latch is suppose to be straight??  or could it be either?? mine was a 6/2 build date.

That's why I keep all my stories anonymous.

What Gene said "straight without the handle ",my 606 build has the straight one.
