Title: JAAK's 1969 R/T
Post by: jaak on March 07, 2011, 12:20:28 AM
I've never really made a thread about my 69 R/T, I've talked about it, shared a few pics, but never made a thread about it, for updates and such. So I thought I'd make this, share some pics of my journey up to now, and have a place to show updates (seems I'm moving faster since the body and paint is done).

My journey actually started in early 1999, when after a 2-3 search I bought this car, a 69 Charger R/T......

That car was pretty rusted, but had alot of nice parts on it, when about 1 1/2 years later I found this.........

So a decision was made to part car #1 and build car #2 (remember this was 10 years ago....long before AMD came along). The second car was running, but I pulled a few things from first car, and actually drove it around a while as it was. The car's wiring was in awful shape....cut/splices everywhere. One day the wiring in the engine bay caught fire, so I laid out of work the next day to remove all wiring and the engine, I guess the 'rebuild' officially begins........

BODYSHOP HELL.
In late 2002/early 2003, A friend (or so I thought at the time) was running a shop repairing painting classic cars. He come by, gave me a quote, struck a deal and the car was sent off to his shop. Here is a couple of crappy pics I found while it was in his shop.........

After 2 years, stripped and primed shell, half-assed trunk floor welded in, and about $1400 later, I had to go get my car back........

This is where it stalls for a while. Since buying the car I have had 2 kids, and bought a house (with a 40 x 32 shop!), then had another kid. So I just piled up the Charger and all my parts in my shop, bought parts when I had extra money, and restored little stuff (ie; grill, console, trim, etc.) until time to get back on the car. I had all the machine work done on the engine, rebuilt the 727 (with guidance from the trans guy at a dealership I used to work at). Also at the time I had a small flux welder and welded in some patches here and there where needed.

Time for body and paint. I absolutely could not find anyone....anyone who wanted to touch this car.....so I rolled up my sleeves and took it on myself. After all rust was taken car of and any and all dents pulled, I started skimming the car with filler and blocking with a long block to get it straight and the lines sharp......

Car was primed with epoxy followed by polyester primer then blocking, then polyester and blocking again.......

Then primed with 2k Urethane and blocked again.........

At this time I decided to jamb out the car. The color I picked was FJ6....always loved the color, and since its a non matching number R/T, Im building it the way I want.....

Primed/blocked the car one last time with 500 grit in prep for paint........

After alot of hard work, finally paint.........

It worked pretty good, I did get a few 'nibs' in it, but it come out during the cutting/buffing process. I had 2 fans blowing in the back (through filters) and 2 pulling out in the front (through filters also) to create a positive pressure. It pulled all the overspray out pretty quick also.

Funny you aged better than most 10 years later.

I agree on picking the color paint you want, even if it had be # matching.

Still digging through old pics......
Here's a couple of things I did prior to painting it, first off I went ahead and installed the engine and trans, because I done had the engine bay painted and I had already removed/reinstalled/realigned the hood 2-3 times during the bodywork process, and I wanted this to be the last time I had to screw with that hood! I also painted the tailpanel and various other parts (grill frame, dash, etc.) before painted the green. Once again just being a 'driver' I used a single stage satin black urethane for durability (it looks glossy in these pics, because it was still wet).....

A couple of months ago, I addressed the fuel system. New tank, sending unit, straps, pad. I also bent up my own new fuel line, using the old one as a template. And here is a pic of the fuel cap install (Alright, I know its a '68 cap, but I've always preferred the smooth top of a '68 cap)..........

Also 2-3 months ago, I wired the car. The only thing I replaced was the engine harness. I used a new M&D harness upgraded with electronic ignition and for a dual field alternator. All the other wiring was in pretty good shape so I was able to make a couple of repairs and reuse it. The only one I had to fabricate was the harness that runs from the dash harness to console harness (runs under driver seat), I couldn't find that one anywhere, Lost mine. Also not I made my own bracket to mount the ECU on the rear of the intake, Ive seen these on eBay, but some scrap metal and about 15 minutes labor I made my own........

INSTALLING NEW REAR BUMPER
I got a new AMD rear bumper the other day (Bought from member jsbrown, best deal of all vendors I contacted). Had a few minutes this morning and went ahead and installed it. I had already removed brackets from old bumper and had cleaned/painted them.

Crusty old bumper....

Title: Re: JAAK's 1969 R/T **update 3/12, stripe installed**
Post by: jaak on March 12, 2011, 04:54:09 PM
Well this morning I decided to take a shot at installing the stripe. I have read Bill440rt's write up several times before attempting, Link>> http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,29293.0.html  (Thanks Bill!)
It took me about 2 1/2-3 hrs installing it by myself and most of that time was spent prepping and measuring. The instructions I got with the decals said to clean the surface with a mixture of 2:1 water and isopropyl alcohol. But right before installing the stripe, I did as Bill mentioned...used a tackcloth to remove any dust/nibs.
Turned out great!

Wet... I figured being a newbie at it, wetting it down would be a little more forgiving (let me move it around...which I had to), but it was pretty warm in the shop today, after spraying it on/squeeging it, after about 10-15 minutes or so, I was able to pull the mask off.

Liquid fabric softner and water mix in a spray bottle, now you know.

You're reading too much into my comment.  I only quoted you to add info to the wet method you had mentioned.
I wouldn't have thought to use fabric softener, but it really works.  Figured I'd pass it on.

Just curious...Brian maybe you or someone else will know, In the instructions I got with the stripe, it states if using reflective material, you have to use the dry method, do not use any type of liquid. Wonder how come??

Should get SFRT's stripe thread in here too, as he includes measurements. Are you guys measuring down the contour of the deck lid or just pulling a tight 4"? They just look crooked.  :Twocents:
Although not as bad as some I've seen, let alone the dreaded pointed-forward-install...

I based everything off the marker hole, I wanted the marker hole to be dead center in the stripe, pretty much after that things fell into place. You had me second guessing myself, so I went back and found the thread with measurements from an original R/t stripe (link>>>>> http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,65236.0.html ) Went back and remeasured and all my measurement were either dead on his or within 1/8", so this tread would be a good resource when measuring and installing.

Probably going red...or black.. or chrome..
I never knew where those round foam washers went from the paint gasket kit... until now. Tnx  :2thumbs:
That green looks REAL nice! Sometimes I wish I had picked a color, maybe when I wing it.

Post by: jaak on May 27, 2011, 11:57:57 PM
Been a while since I've updated, after installing stripe and bumper, I installed the exhaust system I bought off eBay. It was a reproduction system and fit pretty good, the left tail pipe give me a little problems, but I got it in. I installed repro exhaust tips from eBay seller stripeclassics (nice tips) and I bought some new tip hangers from member Back in Black (thanks for the deal!). Here is a pic of the rear of the car with exhaust/tips installed. Also note in the pic the license plate, in Alabama now you can run year of manufacture plates, a friend found this 69 Alabama tag.

I also undercoated the rear wheel wells and installed the wheel lip mouldings....

Installed turn signal delete plates....

Installed hood pad, core and cowl seals...

BIG MOMENT, got the grille installed. The pic in my signature was taken not long after paint, just the grill held in with a couple of bolts. Its now fully installed with all the headlamp parts and hardware....

Scored a very nice used antenna on eBay for 32 bucks....

Fender pentastar....

Had a friend that owed me a favor (put a waterpump and brakes on his van) So he bought me some 3M adhesive and come over to give me a hand installing the vinyl top. The hardest part was the upper-inner corners of the sail panel, after a little cussing it was all good....

....then onto the headliner, I cleaned up and reused the original sunvisors, after a little elbow grease they turned out like new...

With the help of my lovely assistant (wife....thanks Alesha!) we installed the backglass and trim....

Then a couple of days later (again with wife's assistance) we install the front windshield....

Here is how the Charger looks right now, I polished up all my original trim, it was in good shape to be original but there is a piece or two I may replace later on down the road. About all that is left bodywise is buy the front bumper, install it and the front valance. Buy rocker moulding clips (have new repro rocker mouldings), and buy/install side marker lenses. Other than the headliner, I got to buy and install most of the interior.

Looks real nice Jason!!! :2thumbs: I have to say,I'm not really a big fan of color changes to one that was not offered in that year, but that does look really, really good.
On another note, noticed in your pic with the windshield in that your defroster vents are'nt in,are you going to be able to get them in now with the windshield that close right above them??????I've never done them that way, always put them in before the windshield went in.

Thanks Jackson!
About the '69 plate, another thing pretty cool to me is.... On Alabama plates the first digits indicate what county the tag is issued, my plate begins with a 41, that's Lauderdale County, which is the county I live in. All my (newer tags) on my other vehicles start with 41 also.

In another thread I mentioned I sold the "73 to finally finish this 69 I have been working on and off on for years.

I ordered a lot of stuff (I'm sure I missed a thing or two) here's what I have ordered and from whom....

CLASSIC INDUSTRIES
-Seat/Trunk Divider
-Grant Steering Wheel Adapter
-Package Tray
-Bucket Seat Foam
-Seat Belts (Aftermarket)
-Trunk Mat
-Glove Box Liner
-Interior Rear Glass Trim

SUMMIT
-Grant Walnut Tuff Wheel
-Mopar Performance Air Cleaner
-Ignition Coil
-Chrome Lug Nuts (20)

521RESTORATIONS
-Front Bumper

INDIVIDUAL ORDERS OFF OF EBAY
-Carpet
-Door Panels
-ABS Plastic Seat Backs
-Door Jamb Windlace
-Rocker Moulding Clips
-15x7, ION625 Wheels (4)
-Decals Hood Indentions
-Front E-brake Cable
-Misc. Hardware From Fastener Store

Well, stuff has started showing up, today my wheels came in. They are ION 625, 15x7, I really liked these wheels, sort of has a Magnum look to them, but look more current. I went to the local tire shop, and had 235/60-15 BFG's mounted on them. Had to throw a pair on and snap some pics. Totally changes the 'attitude' of the car.

Here's some updated pics. I'm pretty much finished for now, got a few odds-n-ends to do (wiper blades, dome lens, fix a trans leak), but should have it ready to hit the road when spring hits. Just hope its some inspiration to some of you guys starting or mid-way through a project. I did everything myself (my wife lent a hand when I needed it), took me a few years and was on a budget. It's not OEM correct or 100% perfect, but I'm pretty proud of my first ground up project.

Thanks for the props, guys! On the seat covers....budget constraints. I got the whole set for under 200 bucks back a few years ago from Chris McMahon. He has since started making them similar to 69 pattern, but if was after I bought mine. I think these are similar to a 68 GTX pattern.

Well, I have been driving around the town I live in seeing how the car runs, and making a list of 'odds-n-ends' I need to do to drive around and enjoy this thing during summer/fall. One thing I noticed is my gauges are not accurate, I hooked up a mechanical temp gauge while leaving the factory one hooked up...when showing 230* on dash gauge, it showed 170* on mechanical gauge. My oil pressure was reading low too. I decided since it will probably be a while before I can have my gauges rebuilt/calibrated, I decided to install aftermarket (at least temp and oil pressure) for the time being. I have looked at several gauges over the last couple of weeks, I want them to be electric, and I wanted something that would match the car, sort of retro looking. I wanted autometer, but couldn't find what I was looking for. I actually decided on SunPro Retro Line Gauges, mainly because the look so similar to the factory gauge and have the same 'sweep'. Well since I haven't installed A/C stuff you (will probably be a couple of years), and I deleted the radio, I made a metal bracket that goes where the AC/heat controls go. I got them installed today, and tested....temp is good and oil pressure is good! I think they look decent.
SunPro Retro Line....

Installed in my Charger....

My right front parking lamp wasn't working, so I chased it down and found a bad connection in the wiring, repaired that today too. Also my headlight doors stopped flipping up, it was a simple fix, the vacuum connector came loose from the switch.

Both parking lamps working!.....

And last but not least, got to post a pic of my little helper out in the shop today....

Still got a few little things to take care of, but I'm pretty much ready to burn the roads up!
Jason
