Title: 2019 50th Anniversary Daytona Superbird Event - anything in the planning stages?
Post by: Arnie Cunningham on October 09, 2017, 08:14:50 AM
Hello All,
Since all Daytonas and Superbirds were, despite being different model years, produced in the same calendar year (1969) - is 2019 going to be the year for the 50th Anniversary for both cars?
If so, any ideas on when and where?
Maybe if I start now I can have my car running by then lol.
Brennan

very cool of you to offer. it won't look pretty, but i'm going to do everything i can to get mine on the road by then.

i have a buddy dying to start the body and paint work, but i'm hesitant on taking it apart before the meet.

you, danny, and i will have to caravan down, hopefully with one or two of larry b's wings in tow.

Bring 'em all as they are!  It's more important to be there than to be pretty.  They an get restored afterwards.

I agree with Dave in that it is more important to make this once in a life time meet than the condition of the vehicle.
If you can't restore it in the next 2 years get it drivable for the meet and gather parts and cash for the restoration.

Every hotel in Alexander City is just about full up with Wing Car owners with the reunion.  You win no matter what.  But if you want a D-C.com one, gotta start planning now.

There will be gatherings at the Museum, the Wellborn home and at Talladega.

There is a state park about 15 min from the museum.

If you are self contained, the rig parking lot on Hwy 280 has worked for folks in the past.    It is a large strip mall parking lot.   That has been where the trailers have gone.    Unless something has changed drastically, I expect that is where they will be.   It's not walking distance, but if you are not bringing another car to drive, you can snag a ride over to the house or museum.

Like everyone, I am looking forward to the information when you have it. Planning on bringing all 4 of my wingcars and have marked off the calendar already. There is a 50/50 chance of a 5th wingcar I will bring (2nd Daytona) that is hidden in the hills here in southern indiana-it has been unknown for 40 years, but is not really a barn find, just not shown or displayed. Since I can't pull all 4 on 1 trailer, I guess Reliable Transportation will have trailers going there?

Working hard to get my 'Bird down there... from up here in chilly Ontario! Just gotta get my Bee done first so I can start cleaning up the Bird. :yesnod:

This is the only one that is not recommended, but still around in an emergency.

Thanks! So what would check in day be?.. the day before everything starts? What day would that be and until when?

If I haul down with my truck and 24' enclosed, what's the drill for parking.. assuming car comes out of trailer and is what gets parked at hotel with everyone else's cars. I hear there is a "rig" yard somewhere.

If nothing has changed, Thursday the 10th will be Atlanta Motor Speedway for track laps.   There will likely be a hotel in the Atlanta area Wednesday night the 9th if you plan to attend.    Otherwise, everything moves to Alexander City by Thursday night.     There is no reason to get into Alexander City earlier than Thursday.

Most of the hotels do not have room for trailers.     In the past, we use a large shopping center parking lot nearby for the trailers and motor homes.    Most people will keep their cars at the hotels.

On the list of hotels, the other non-recommended place is the American Inn.     Several people managed to escape there the last time after checking in.     Here is a review from someone who stayed there during the recent race weekend a few days ago.

The trailers come with us up to the track.    There is plenty of room.    Very few people go back to Alex City on Sunday night.    Being southeast of the track, it's an hour in the wrong direction for most people headed home.

Wait for the announcements.    I would expect it to be like last time where it was its own event that occurred the day before the reunion started.

We showed up at Atlanta,  signed their waiver,  and each car paid them a small donation.

Won't matter where you land, you will have a great time.   Plenty of car things to do in Florida as well.   Garlits Museum,  Daytona, etc.

I have been down there sometimes before. Garlits is great but to be honest Talladega is better than Daytona.
But then again I have been there 3 times so I maybe blinded..

Anyhow this trip will be the best thing next year. Locking forward to see all of you and your cars.

Is that the Daytona I showed you? Or a different one?

Hampton Inn will have rooms.   If you play with the dates, you cannot make a reservation for ANY date in October 2019 right now.    This means they have not yet posted their inventory.     I have seen this before.

I called them at the location today and they confirmed their rooms should start showing up available to book after November 1.

Just don't do like I did the last time and book a return flight too early from ATL... We tried to leave before the race, but the roads going out were closed as they converted all directions going to the Speedway! We just sat at the exit for an hour before we could head out and make our flight just in time! ;-)
Lesson learned, will spend an extra day this time!

Have any of you guys double towed in Alabama and / or Georgia?? Considering pulling the enclosed and a lightweight single axle camper down vs worrying about hotels there and back.

Yes, thanks, I've seen that... but my son at Talladega both this year and last tells me there were numerous motorhomes towing double behind them into the grounds and I wondered if anyone had first hand knowledge of double towing down there. I do know that I can't cross the border into New York State double, customs makes you leave one trailer behind as double tow is illegal in NY... but I can cross at Detroit into Michigan.

It's not just when there, it's the other 1.5 weeks or so we'll probably spend touring across into Arizona / grand canyon / etc before heading home so there's no worry of the truck / trailer being stolen in the night. If it is we'll be along for the ride!!

Ill be riding a 500, but mine will stay at home. It's a driver, but not all the way across the USA kind of driver.

Just got the last non smoking king suite showing at the Days Inn for Thursday to Sunday.  :yesnod: Currently showing 5 regular smoking rooms left.

One thing that ticked me off. First logging into Days Inn and choosing Thur arrival to Monday check out it came up that regular rooms would average $69/night and suites where $104. I then changed to Sunday check out, hit refresh and rooms suddenly became $93 and $133/night. Adding the day back to Monday and hitting refresh..still the higher prices.  :shruggy:

Oh well, where are people staying in Atlanta that are doing the speedway on Thursday???

You driving the car in Bryan or trailering?

Figured we'd stay Wednesday night in Atlanta near the Speedway, do the track fun and then high tail it to Alexandria City before 6PM check in cut off to get checked in, the car back out of the trailer and figure out where to park my truck / trailer. Did they use the Walmart Superstore parking lot last time or??

We are driving down from Seattle like we did in 1999......we stayed about 40 miles south of Birmingham that year, so I have no info about trailer parking or Walmart store info

Okay thanks! We're hauling, from Ontario Canada, just to be safe. Figuring after about 14 years since I've plated her, I'll be doing good to get the car ready for some short drives let alone the 1200 miles each way to Dega!

Great road trip Bryan! Presume with a group of cars so you have "back up" if need be. Just the wife and I aren't so daring.

BTW.. anyone know if my Son and d-in-law that will be there at Talladega all weekend camping and race watching will be able to get to us and into the car with the wife and I for the Talladega laps?  :shruggy:

The track lap meet up is outside the backstretch at the entry to turn 3.      They are building a new tunnel there right now.     I expect someone will be able to walk through there from the infield.    If they have seats in the front grandstands, it is a long walk.

Nothing has been announced for Atlanta hotels, but last time, it was in the McDonough area.  That's about 13 miles from the track.

I MAY have a friend to haul my car.  As a "shop" teacher i don't get any time for something like this during the school year so I have to take sick time.  I would like to know, so I can plan, what time does the Atlanta lap event start and what time do the Talladega laps end?

Dunno on the Atlanta laps yet.    Plan on being there in the morning.

The parade laps at Talladega are over with by noon.      About the time the race starts, the traffic pattern of all lanes coming into the track reverts back to normal and you can leave and get on the interstate.  Race start time will be determined by TV, but should be about a 1 PM start.     Once the race starts, there is no problem leaving.    If you have not seen a race at Talladega,  I would encourage you to do so.
