Title: Which 4 speed?
Post by: Bens340 on November 26, 2021, 10:32:26 AM
Ive been wanting to convert my 3rd gen for a few years now, saving up and researching where i can and of course id like to be absolutly sure about buying the correct unit. so the car is a 340, i dont really care about having an over drive  trans, so that aside, will any b-body 833 unit work from any year so long as its a 23 spline? what about the tail housing? do casting numbers matter? all info is appreciated thank you.

340s used a 23 spline input shaft so no need for an 18.

1969 model year back B-body four speeds only had one shifter mounting point, the 1970 up units have two and have the same tail shaft as E-bodies and 833 equipped trucks.

(some late 1969 B-body 4-speeds had the dual shift pads, but the rear pads were not drilled or tapped for bolts)

Automatic to 4-speed conversion kits are available - www.brewersperformance.com

thank you for that, i did get a quote from brewers and you certainly have to pay to play, which is understandable since the kit includes absolutly everything and would be the best option since i cannot find anything locally.

do the later truck/van over srive 4 speeds have a shorter 1st gear ratio than the car units?

Yes...   1st gear in a traditional 4-speed is 2.66 while the OD model is something like 3.09...      very short first gear with a lot of RPM drop between gears. Its honestly not too bad though if you're wanting to just cruise around --- but definitely not a performance feel at all
