Title: Wheel Backspacing for Superbird
Post by: WINGR on June 17, 2011, 01:03:45 PM

Hi, I am thinking about putting a set of 15 x 7 or 15 x 8 Vintage Style/five slot Bart Racing Wheels on my Bird with 255/60/R15 Eagle GT11's all the way around. Does anyone know what the proper/preferred backspacing should be in order to alleviate any chance of rubbing? Also does the fact that it has disc brakes come into play?

Mucho thanks in advance.  :2thumbs:

I had some 15 X 8 Kidney Bean Slots made for mine with 4" back spacing.  I have front disc also.  Havent put them on yet.  I plan on running 255-60-15 all around.  If you go to the suspension forum there is a lot of discussions on tire/wheel combos that have been used.  If you find a place that still has those size GT II's with 4 more after yours please send me a pm.  I have searched all over and come up dry.

I suggest 4.5 inch back space. I run mag500's on my 69 and this BS perfectly centers the 275/60 15's I run on the back..........no rubbing whatsoever  :Twocents:

Thanks for the replies and the help, I have been told a couple of different things but wanted to here what other Superbird owners had used. One of my friends said that he usually goes 4.5" on the back and 3.5 on the front of B-body mopars. I believe this is due to the wider openings in the back, but I don't believe he has done that on a Bird for sure. Any other thoughts?

This was one of better wheel size tools I found done by a member here.

There is a company named PERCEY that makes a "wheel fitment tool" it will tell you exactly what tire wheel combo will work with out any guessing, it's like $69 from Summit Racing, well worth the small investment if your planning on running large rubber & rims with no rubbing issues...

These cars have pretty big wheel wells.I took the chance sight unseen and bought a set of 20's and they fit good on my bird.Plenty of room in the rear and the front dont hit anything.I am not sure what back spacing the wheels have.  :rotz:

It sounds like we are both going for a similar look, I already have my tires. I am sorry to say I do not have any leads on another set since they are now not making them anymore but if I hear of any I will sure to let you know. Did you already do the measurements and/or figuring to come up with the 4" backspacing? The wheels I am going to get come either 3" or 4" BS which of course it would have to be at least the 4", but there is a possibilty they could go 4.25 or 4.5 if necessary. My problem is that I need to figure this out now in order to get them before Indy at the end of the month. Thanks again for the help.

Steve, I haven't had tires mounted on them and don't have fenders on the car yet to give an honest answer.  I reviewed some of the backspacing threads and used the vexer tool when it was working to make my decision.  Tan Top had used the 4" BS on his with 255's and said it worked fine.
http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,73119.75.html  Look at the post on page 4.  I went with the 4" so I could get a deeper dish look.  Post a pic when you decide which to get.  Sorry I couldn't help out with some of my own.  I may have some 255's on another rim I will check the BS and let you know.  Found the link.  I still managed to have it work for me.

How did the rims you ordered work out with the back spacing?  Got any pics you can show?
