Title: At it again! 1970 Charger resurrection
Post by: tsmithae on January 09, 2011, 09:47:14 AM
Alright, I am starting a thread on my '70 500.  I am a little late starting this, but I have a day off and nothing to do.

Picking her up, slightly disassembled, partially sanded/rusted, engine and trans sitting in front of her, hood and bumper in the truck bed.

The garage she will be restored in, inside sits a 55 Chebby that I helped my late uncle restore (RIP), 67 Mustang fastback (owned by my other uncle), and 70 Chevelle (owned by yet another uncle).

This totally rained on my parade that day... :bad day:

A week or 2 later, my parts runner is sitting a little low to the ground...

Welcome!  Nice start.  Keep up the pics.  Color plans?  What was the original color?

Thanks guys!  I will keep pictures coming on in.  The car was originally FF4, vinyl top, green interior.

I am going to go with 999, no vinyl, black interior, rear 500 stripe.

Looks like you're off to a great start.
I assume the previous owner sandblasted the engine bay? It's a bummer that he let it rust like that, without a coat of primer or something. Looks like it should clean off pretty nicely, though.

Post by: tsmithae on January 09, 2011, 12:35:34 PM
Thanks!

And, yep, he had. He was going to make a wing car out of it and had started on it when the roof at his shop collapsed and let in all that moisture and let her rust.  I did a little light sanding and that appears to be all she will need to clean up (well, maybe more than that since I tried to seal her back up a bit to prevent further rusting).

Welcome to the site! Great project and please keep the progress pix coming......we're pix addicts here!  :icon_smile_big:

Tell me about the whole RIT experience. Have they turned out as well as you'd hoped? How long did you soak them and what was the water/RIT ratio?
My belts are faded and I'd like to do the same as what you've doen. Any info would be great. Thanks
Title: Re: My 1970 Charger 500 Resto-mod
Post by: tsmithae on January 09, 2011, 03:27:46 PM
The RIT was not a bad experience at all, As you can tell, I used an old, but clean, bucket and i used the higher concentration liquid dye vs the dry poweder dye.  I just followed the directions on the bottle for double strength.   Here's a picture of the weave, remember it was a faded green before.  I think I may do another batch and soak them once more before I finish the buckles and put them in the car. However, they actually look even better than that picture (which was taken day of) and the color set a little bit better.  But, for 40 year old seat belts... amazing results. I recommend it; however, it will also dye your white chrysler tags, just in case you're trying to preserve those as original).

Question on the RIT.  I was worried it might come off on your clothes?  Have you rubbed it across something white?  I assume as some clothing itself is dyed, it should be good stuff and if it came off, nobody would use it.  Also, what were doing for the color on the buckles? Thanks.

Looks good! Please do us all a favor and get a proper steel fuel line(s)....too much rubber there - not the safest set-up.  :2thumbs:

If he swaps the fuel rail around then he would only have to run rubber to the steel line that comes from the fuel pump...or possibly just run steel line from fuel pump to the front of the engine after he swaps his rail around.

Thanks guys!

BIGBLCK-The RIT I think had mentioned letting things set for a period of time before use, IIRC, and, the buckles are in OK shape for now, I just need to clean up overspray on the chrome portions and reshoot the latch potions.

maxwell- That is a temp. setup that we are going to use to break in the engine once we finish modifying the engine test stand; my uncles built it to do chebbys and ferds. I plan on getting a new fuel rail and changing the setup for that. Thanks for the warning tho!

Looking good.  Died the seat belts yourself, eh?  I think i'm gonna break down and buy new ones for my '69 from BEAparts.  A couple of mine have cuts in them and I'd rather just start with new ones that I know won't break, just in case.

I wish I could do my own body work, would have saved a ton of money.

Thanks for sharing.

one most important question about this build is, is that a terrarium that the gauges are sitting on? looks like a coffee table terrarium. better pic of it would be cool. thanks :2thumbs:

Well, momentous day! I have pretty much finished the dash project!

Ok, to start off:

Someone had decided to paint EVERYTHING black on this poor dash and needless to say, did so poorly and with cheap paint that was chipping peeling and fading. So, that had to go. I went with using Super Clean (worked AMAZINGLY) and toothbrushes.  Then, I went ahead with Rustoleum's paint for plastic to cover up the, by now, destroyed original finish.  Then, I did a coat of Testors white for the lettering on the gauge bezel. Next...

HOURS of careful masking (about 8 on that alone)

Then, I used a product that I found at a hobby store called Alclad to attempt to mimic the chrome.  This stuff worked great! Not quite perfect but best damn spray chrome I have found yet. Also, I found that easy-does-it with this, over-apply and the finish gets duller. Here are the results.

Alright, time for an update I think.

Unfortunately I travel for work and that takes up most of my time and lately I've been helping out my folks with a house remodeling that is taking up a LARGE majority of the rest of it.  However, I do what I can and the dash is FINALLY almost complete.  I ordered the odometer renumbering kit while I was gone this time (just got off of work and then a week long vacation in New Orleans) and as soon as I got home, I tore my cluster apart and renumbered the odometer.  Now, with any luck, I will get a little time to work on my car and not spend the entire break working on my folks house...

Alright, it's been a while yet again... But, finally, progress!

Discovered this massive lag bolt sticking through my floor...

Discovered my rear window trim is garbage.

Removed Headliner, package tray, mirror, visors, belt clips, hangers, dome light.

Discovered the metal around my rear window doesn't APPEAR to be as bad as I thought.

Also, not pictured:
-Kick panels
-Anything in the way of the headliner
-the last of the interior trim

Here is yet more finished work.

Mirror before and after pics (steel wool, started coarse and worked my way down to 0000 on the post and base and then the mirror had overspray on it from when someone had decided the interior should be grey)

Upper door pads went from sad hole-filled black/grey/red/green to sexy black (I used vinyl repair/filler to patch the holes and cracks and then vinyl dye once I removed the 2-3 layers of old paint)

And, the dye is drying on the visors as I update this and the arms for those have been steel-wooled and then sprayed matte aluminum(same as base/post for rearview.

More pictures tomorrow hopefully!

Lastly, thanks to bananadan at the 70 Registry, I have my button, a spare hinge cover, and a trim piece for my parking brake.

I will keep those wrenches spinning and do my best to get the interior completely restored by the end of summer!

Alright, only a small update for now, unfortunately.  Every single time I go out to my car I get a phone call about 30 minutes later saying someone needs my help, whether it be my parents needing help with our house renovation or my aunt needing he water heater replaced or my uncle needing my assistance for a recording for a voice-over... Whew... And I thought I would get to relax finally not being on tour!

Anyway, upper dash pad redyed

And, I have begun the heater controls and have ordered the decals from PCG, they shipped today and hopefully I will have them early next week.  Unfortunately, the controls have been painted black, along with every single other thing that was inside my car... Oh well, I keep trying to think of it as them doing me a favor and preserving the original finish underneath the layers of primer and paint... The only issue has been getting to the original finish without damaging it...

Title: Re: My 1970 Charger 500 Restoration
Post by: tsmithae on June 09, 2011, 07:09:14 PM
Ok, well progress has been slow since I have had to install a new pressure tank and water heater for my aunt, drywall and do electrical work at my folks house, and try to get some work done in the family garage so that we can get closer to getting my car in for new sheet metal.

However, I did find some time.

Removed the steering column and spruced up the steering wheel a bit.

Also, the heater control decals made it and those are installed and now I can add the heater controls to my "Done" pile!

Before and after:

The steering column is mostly finished, I am just waiting on a donor turn signal switch from Tolley at 1970chargerregistry.com (thanks!!!) so that I can attempt to make one that looks proper.  Also pictured is my new (to me) FSM!

Also, my uncle and I got the idea that we should build a blast cabinet instead of buy one.  So, using old square tube steel from an old awning, this is what we have so far.  We plan on having the top and the diagonal all plexi and then have a recapturing tray at the bottom of the cabinet.  Dimensions are 24 deep x 40 long x 30 high.

Ok well, progress is still rolling in; despite this...  and yes, that dangling bit of wire is our main power feed...

However, steering column is finished! Minus the horn cap which is drying as we speak.

And, the blast cabinet is taking shape nicely.

Also, rebuilt the headlight motor and now it works flawlessly! (see here http://1970chargerregistry.com/mboard/index.php?topic=548.0)

I have finally finished the tail panel, which I have tried and tried and tried again to get it to look good.

First off, I had to straighten one of the corners... it had a pretty nice indent/line in it that I actually am really happy about how straight it looks after paint.

However, I got a run in the paint... One. Stupid. Run.

So, I decided to try to sand the run down and reshoot that area.  Well, it eliminated the run but I wasn't satisfied with it because I could see the transition (it was too close the the grained center section and I could tell... I'm not entirely sure if anyone else could have, but I could and it would have bothered me every single time I looked at the back of the car...) So, I removed the paint on the entire center section, which was a LOT harder the second time around.

Then, after finally getting it clean, sanded the transitions into the new paint that I was leaving down with various grits during various stages and eventually was pleased with that.  Next, more primer; then,  more paint.  Finally, Success!  With the base black coat....

Then, hours of careful taping and comparing to the pictures I shot of it before I stripped it down.

Alright, I am taking this moment to give everyone a brief warning...

DO NOT USE EASY OFF ON ANYTHING ANODIZED UNLESS YOU WISH IT TO REMOVE THE ANODIZING!!!!
The end result after this will be pitted, rough, dull, lifeless, etc etc etc.  However, you can sand it down and regain a smooth feel to it.

Anyways... I then shot the Anodized Aluminum substitute (Rustoleum Metallic Silver).

And, a couple pics.

What a difference detail work makes! Nice XLRman! The Mrs and I met Tolley and family at this years' Mopar Alley show. Great guy and lovely family.
The front valance light buckets sure have different pigtails. The bucket on the right is the same as the ones on our 69. I wonder if they are the same for 70's? Do you need buckets/lens? if so PM me. Really nice work and that old wrench will look good on your garage wall! :2thumbs:
As I was looking closely at the work you did on the dash panel it would seem the headlight switch just mounts to the back of it yes? I have a new switch and need to replace the original, it looks like all I need to do is pull that dash panel enough to replace the switch. I hope it's that easy. Your car will be on the road before you know it!

Twodko, just wondering... XLR, did I mention that I am an audio engineer (and you're referring to an XLR cable) or are you referring to something else?

Also, the headlight switch did indeed mount to the frame of the cluster and once that is removed, it is held on by 2 screws, IIRC.

I will be honest that the Metallic Silver is making me happy.  It was FAR less than getting it re-anodized and I could do it myself.  However, I am sure that it is not going to be exactly the same as getting your parts re-anodized, but for me, it looks as close to anodized as one can get without paying for it!  :2thumbs:

Thanks!

I hope that you can save most if not all of your parts, I personally find it really gratifying to take something tired and old and making it new again, instead of buying new.  As for the gauges, they were from whitegauges.net and they fit alright.  I hear that performancecargraphics.com has a set that most people have used.  I will keep updates and pictures coming as time allows.  Currently I just started a new job and have been working 70 hrs/week lately and that has been taking a lot out of me.

Good luck with yours, I hope your winter shows a lot of progress!

Thanks for the info on the Gauges tsmithae , will check those out.  It appears the PO installed a newer clock as the dials are still pearly white, but the speedo is pretty faded.  Our plan is to clean and use all the parts we have (I agree with giving them a second life as well as the good feeling of doing the job ourselves). plan to take apart the steering column and repaint the blinker switch as well as the column as it's green.   :rotz:   Hope to hit a large car swap next month here in CT and see what we can find!   :coolgleamA:

will be tracking progress with pictures and video as time allows.   good luck getting back on track with your project as it looks like a show winner when completed!   :2thumbs:

Well, after a several month hiatus, I am back to wrenching on my car, albeit in frequently.

Lately, I have gone through al of the wiring harnesses and I am in the process of making a custom relay harness/box for my headlights (and I believe that I will be adding in an extra relay for an electric pusher just in case...) I also just removed my heater box and will be completely restoring that as well, does anyone have experience with replacing the heater core and costs for repair/replace just in case I need to do so?

However, I managed to get an extended weekend off work and I left the big city for my folks place (where my car resides).  So, I had to fire up the 383 again and this time, I was actually rolling!

A little bit about this engine, 383, .40 over, Xtreme Energy cam (Can't recall which specifically, I will have to go through my paperwork if anyone is that interested), single place torker intake, Holley 4160, carter fuel pump... anything else, feel free to ask!

will figure out how to post the video I snapped with my phone and post it up for all to hear!

Good stuff man!  :2thumbs:  I'm in the middle of my 73 resto too.  I'm getting some ideas for mine from your progress.  What was it that you put the seatbelts in if you don't mind my asking?  Also what paint did you use for all the plastic panels/visors etc. or did you use die?  I've never had any experience with die, just curious how they work and where to get them.  Thanks for any info you can offer.

Thanks all!

I'll admit, I hit a pretty rough spot for a bit and had some pretty major life changes but all is looking up and although I live in Chicago and the car is about 100 miles away, I have been dragging parts to my apartment and restoring them as I go.

So far I've gotten the harness all redone and am developing ab idea for a headlights upgrade that would turn out to be a plug-n-play type upgrade.

Right now I'm taking a break from the electrical while im finding parts and just drug the heater box to my apartment. It is torn apart and I'm working on cleaning it up and then rebuilding it. Any good advice on seals? I've heard of DMT, anyone use them?  Also, any good way to test the core for leaks?

Animal, lets see it!

Bigez, for the seatbelts I used RIT dye, double strength. Plastic, I stripped, cleaned, prepped and then used plastic primer then plastic paint. Vinyl, I cleaned, prepped, and dyed with vinyl dye. Most everything I used was available at various local auto parts stores, hardware stores, and hobby stores. Good luck!

Still working on loading the videos and need to shoot one driving down the street.
Need to order up some wiring harnesses and get cranking on that so I can start putting the interior back together.  Just picked up some new bolts so I can weld in new studs for the seats. The list has grown again for paint and prep!! Hope to get the harness in and them get the car off for a respray. It looks good in pictures but the color is thin and the clear is rough!
Will post up pictures soon and video when I can.
Keep your progress going!!  I've had a few bumps in the road lately, but am focusing on the car and yard work to keep me busy.

Cheers

Let us know when those videos get uploaded and keep at your car as well, I will be trying my best! Between work and living in Chicago, it has been rough but I'm trying to keep at it!

And thanks for the info on DMT, I will be ordering that set as soon as I'm convinced that I can repair my heater box - mine has pretty sizeable damage to the passenger side, either someone tried prying against it or something, I'm confused... and ill post pics as soon as I can (if there is one thing I have learned, this place requires pics of everything!).

Well, time to get this thread back on track!

I have done a lot in the past couple days since I quite my oppressive, underpaying, frustrating job in hopes of making things work out for myself in the freelance realm.

However, back to what we all want to hear about, the Charger!
Headlight upgrade box is finished and waiting for a custom bracket and a completed car to mount it to (http://www.1970chargerregistry.com/mboard/index.php?topic=1146.msg10400#msg10400)

The heater box is now completed as well!

However, here are pictures of the progress, new heater core backing plate thanks to Jefferson and the rebuild kit thanks to DMT.

Well, not too much to report this very second, I have brought the heater box and my electrical projects to storage and picked up a couple more small parts that I can restore out of my apartment.  I also went to car show/swap meet earlier today in Belvidere, IL and while there was really no mopar parts to be found, I did find a set of YOM plates that I intend to use when my car is finished!

Nice work so far and cool plates! We can run YOM plates here in Michigan. It's a one time registration fee of $35.00. Any idea what it costs in the land of Lincoln?

Yes, you can run YOM plates in Illinois, the catch is that you have to have current antique plates in the car with you and that the same rules & restrictions that apply to AV plates apply to your YOM plates.

Ok, ok... I know I don't post here much, I am definitely a lot more active over at the 1970chargerregistry.com.  However, I do like to try to keep you guys up to date as well; so, here goes an abridged version of the past few months (which have been quite busy for me with work and thus, little has been done on the car, unfortunately).

However, here is proof that I am still in it to win it!  One piece at a time.

Here is the most recent engine firing. And, no there is no "real exhaust yet... please ignore the part where it shoots off the "exhaust..." And, no, it isn't perfectly tuned... I plan on getting headers and a full exhaust when I install it in the car and then I will have a much better idea of what she will run like.

(http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz45/TSmithae/th_2012-08-19_12-39-51_263.jpg) (http://s812.photobucket.com/albums/zz45/TSmithae/?action=view&current=2012-08-19_12-39-51_263.mp4)

I wandered in to harbor freight the other day because I happened to be in the area and to my amazement, the bench-top buffers were 30% off! So, if I can manage to not work every day of September, I will be polishing all of my stainless trim.

Here is a comparison, you guys tell me which one looks better.

This brings me to a good question.... what all parts are stainless that I should be polishing? I have the obvious drip rail, belt molding, and front/rear window trims. What am I forgetting?

The Bad:
-Need passenger side frame rail from axle back
-need new rear valence
-need both quarters
-need passenger rocker (the potential exists that I can still save it, doubtful tho)
-need passenger floor from cowl back
-need entire trunk and extensions

The good
-I have a surgrip already! (I haven't figured out the ratio yet)
-I think I have a 489 Diff
-I can work on my car in a heated garage with almost any tool imaginable!

I also spent a good period of time playing a game called "where does the bondo end?"

There is absolutely no reason on earth that this much bondo should EVER be used...

Second pic shows the bracing I have currently done in order to try to make sure that my tailpanel doesn't move. What do the experts say, is it sufficient? I will be removing the lower valence, trunk floor and extensions, and rear right frame rail from the hump for the rear end.

Rear window and windshield are out!

my car got hit sometime from the looks of it.

Braced the interior and I plan on getting more tubing to do an X brace from the front to the rear.

Started to remove some of the metal to see what surprises I could find.

Cleaning up at the end of the day yielded a HUGE pile of bondo.

Also, after driving 12 hrs round trip, I have returned with this.  Is it perfect, no, but it is MUCH better than what I have now and this one will definitely work!

I started out by removing the pass. frame rail, well, what was left of it! It is most definitely strange removing such an important piece of the care, kinda of exciting and scary all at the same time.

Then came the rest of the trunk floor and that what remained of the trunk support.

I removed my rear valence corner...

Don't worry, I wasn't actually leaning on the taillight panel, just posing for a very cheesy self-portrait.

Cleaned up all the metal that would be inaccessible with a flap disc and then a wire wheel for the areas that I couldn't get with a flap disc.  After this was done, I sprayed it down with a product called Prep-Step, scrubbed with a brush, and then rinsed it off with more PS, which is to be left to dry and neutralizes the rust and metal.

Shot a few selected areas with Zero-Rust and I will say that I am so far pleased with the stuff and how thick it was, yet still able to be shot from a HVLP without thinning (as per their instructions).

As a last note, I took a lot of pictures of placement of things in the trunk and bracketry, if anyone ever needs, I am more than willing to share.

More progress and more pictures.

I test fit, hammered, retested, adjusted, refit, readjust... until finally....

Look Ma, no hands/jacks/clamps/vicegrips!!!  I am holding off on welding the rear hanger until I have the rear crossmember (tracking says it should arrive tomorrow).

(http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz45/TSmithae/70%20Charger/DSCN5048_zpsb18e85f1.jpg)(http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz45/TSmithae/70%20Charger/DSCN5049_zps5cac08e6.jpg)

I also spent some time making and welding in patch panels.

It is quite nice to see a solid frame under this thing again!

Also spent some more time fabbing and welding in the lower rear portions of the inner wheel wells.

Then, I saw the mirrors I got sitting on the shelf and decided that since I was in the mode of putting things back on the Charger...

More photos and more progress!

Finished up the inner wheel well patches, there is just a little bit of grinding left to do on them.

I shot primer up under the dutchman, in the drivers frame rail, and anywhere that will be a pain in the d*** when the trunk floor goes in - not the most even painting I have ever done but considering the circumstances and the positioning... I can't complain!

(http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz45/TSmithae/70%20Charger/DSCN5110_zps3488c276.jpg)(http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz45/TSmithae/70%20Charger/DSCN5111_zpsd7c4902f.jpg)

Test fit the trunk floor and the rear valence.

And then decided to punch a bunch of holes in my brand new trunk floor.

I finally have a solid trunk floor again!

I am also VERY pleased with how the patch/repair pieces I made for the inner wheel wells tuned out.

(http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz45/TSmithae/70%20Charger/IMG_1928_zps4ec93656.jpg)(http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz45/TSmithae/70%20Charger/IMG_1929_zps70bc9811.jpg)

The rear valence is test fit right now and there is some massaging to do with the rear lip of the trunk pan to make it meet the valence properly...

As requested...

As some may know, I had a knee injury at work a bit ago and I will be off work for a bit. Well, the doc. says that I shouldn't need surgery and after a few weeks of physical therapy, taking it easy, and not working I should be fine.

What that means to me is grab a buddy or family member, get my ass in the garage as much as possible, and get as much done as I can while still taking it easy on my knee.

Here's the start of what I'm doing this weekend.

So far what has been completed this weekend is:
-right rear footwell cut out and new one burnt in place
   -floor pan removed
   -rear tail panel reinforced
-torsion bars removed (I made my own tool using a u-bolt, 2 8" pieces of 2x4, and a 1" rubber hose)
   -ground plug welds
   -ground plug welds
   -ground plug welds

What I now have to place an order for....
   -torsion bar crossmember
   -subframe connectors

And.... wait for it.......

pictures!

Wound up chasing a couple pinholes which turned into this...

(http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz45/TSmithae/70%20Charger/20130915_105905_zpsb396a580.jpg) (http://s812.photobucket.com/user/TSmithae/media/70%20Charger/20130915_105905_zpsb396a580.jpg.html)

Test fit the outer wheelhouse and it look like it only need a little massaging.

(http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz45/TSmithae/70%20Charger/20130915_151951_zps02b25a23.jpg) (http://s812.photobucket.com/user/TSmithae/media/70%20Charger/20130915_151951_zps02b25a23.jpg.html)

Wound up test fitting the new quarter and I am very pleased with the fit overall.

Then some more Zero Rust before I start welding. Hopefully next weekend will bring more progress!

You're Welcome. What coating did you use before setting your quarter panel on?

I haven't burned the quarter in yet but I plan on using some undercoating of some sort... I hadn't gotten around to getting any yet.

However, if you're talking about the inner structure I have been using Zero Rust, its a real thick primer/encapsulator after treating with their prep to clean and treat the metal.

I'll vouch for the Zero Rust; it held the rust at bay for years until I could afford body work...

Thanks for the encouragment guys!  I'm glad to hear that someone else is vouching for the zero rust. Anyone have suggestions for the undercoating for the quarters? I have all sorts of gravity and siphon fed guns, not aure what my largest nozzle is tho.  I am not opposed to spray bomb stuff either.  Also, I'm not a billionaire so a quality product for a good price is what I'm going for.

Thanks!  Here's some more.

My only problem right now is that the extension is hitting the side marker and not allowing the quarter to sit properly... I am think that I will be needing to cut the welds at the crossmember and redo those after pulling the outer edge of the extension down more - Has anyone else had this issue or do the marker lights usually touch the extension?

I did throw the quarter extensions, trunk, side marker, rear valence, and corner caps to double check fit and I anticipate being able to get it all satisfactory tomorrow.

It shouldn't hurt, I did it before I cut the floor out to be safe and make sure that the body didn't flex or torque on me as I was cutting everything out.  So far, so good!

Alright Jason, ONLY because you said so...  :icon_smile_big:

Today was  quite productive, I got everything tweaked to the point where I was happy with the fitment.  I only had the quarter on an off around 50 times...

I got the inner structure and wheel wells seam sealed.

Then I got crazy and burnt in the passenger quarter. Used a spot welder wherever it was possible and the rest were plug welds.

I managed to get enough energy to get back to the garage a little bit today. So glad that my uncles have set aside their hatred for Mopars enough to help me out.  That and having the car 2 feet off the ground so I can just sit and work on her helps a lot.

The drivers quarter came off and I had a few areas to repair.

Well, I have been working as I can and this cortisone shot is making things a little bit easier.  Since my last update (with pictures) I have managed to get all of the brackets back in place in the trunk, the outer wheel well finished, trunk extension finished and seam sealer in place.  I spent the rest of the day today getting everything prepped to burn the drivers quarter in place for my b-day tomorrow.  If I get really crazy I may try to have the deck filler in place this weekend too.

Pics!

Yes sir, we are moving! This knee has been cooperating a lot more since that cortisone shot.  :D  I might actually have gotten the dutchman panel in if I had some panel adhesive... I will call it good with a quarter panel and rear valence.   :yesnod:

So far I got washer nozzle/hose kit, lower control arm braces, a tailpanel emblem, and my drivers quarter burned in for my birthday!

Removed the deck filler, cleaned up the plenum, and painted the inside of it.

Well, I managed to get a bit done lately.

Stripped paint at the rear pan lip and the adjoining area on the rear valence to get ready for panel adhesive.  I just realized today that I have used conventional resette welds, spot welding, and now panel adhesive, It's good to be well-rounded!

(http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz45/TSmithae/70%20Charger/20131209_111044_zpsb3b900b3.jpg) (http://s812.photobucket.com/user/TSmithae/media/70%20Charger/20131209_111044_zpsb3b900b3.jpg.html)

And, she is all welded in and the panel adhesive is setting.

The passenger corner cap wasn't terrible but the Drivers side... UGH.  :hammer:

Then on to the trunk lid repairs and fortunately the missing blind nut was found in the deck lid!  :woot:

The latch area...

Now the hinge area... Why, why why???

(http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz45/TSmithae/70%20Charger/20131209_141546_zpsd2889cc9.jpg) (http://s812.photobucket.com/user/TSmithae/media/70%20Charger/20131209_141546_zpsd2889cc9.jpg.html)

I also got a phone call from Greyhound and I have a crossmember waiting for me (Thanks Avolow!!!  ) And then when I got home I had a package waiting for me.  My reverse lights were shot so I jumped on these when I saw them.

And this decklid was actually one I just bought.  Mine was in good shape but the rear seam was a little rusty; I saw this one and the seams were perfect but someone had mangled it thinking that it was the problem on why things weren't lining up correctly.   :slap:

So, I lied and it wasn't tomorrow.  But, I have been busy.   :yesnod:

Despite the inevitable craziness that comes with the holidays, I have managed to get a decent amount done lately and should have a floor in before '14!

I replaced the old accident damaged firewall/door area.

Well, it has been a minute. I have had some things pop up with life... surgery, etc. and have been forced to take a minor break from the car.  Today, I managed to get back at it a bit.

Wait a minute... where did my car go?

(http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz45/TSmithae/70%20Charger/20140510_160126_zps1johjjij.jpg) (http://s812.photobucket.com/user/TSmithae/media/70%20Charger/20140510_160126_zps1johjjij.jpg.html)

How did this get out here?

(http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz45/TSmithae/70%20Charger/20140510_160607_zpsnjyznqte.jpg) (http://s812.photobucket.com/user/TSmithae/media/70%20Charger/20140510_160607_zpsnjyznqte.jpg.html)

Dreamin...

(http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz45/TSmithae/70%20Charger/20140510_160708_zpsaygrnjoe.jpg) (http://s812.photobucket.com/user/TSmithae/media/70%20Charger/20140510_160708_zpsaygrnjoe.jpg.html)

She sits on her own 4 wheels and saw the light of day for the first time in about a year and a half... ugh, where has the time gone?

(http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz45/TSmithae/70%20Charger/20140510_162515_zpsaw2ih3ki.jpg) (http://s812.photobucket.com/user/TSmithae/media/70%20Charger/20140510_162515_zpsaw2ih3ki.jpg.html)

I hope to be having more to post these days and I know I have been a bit absent lately.  I have had a lot going on in life that has kinda deterred from the Charger... I'm hoping to be able to squeeze in more Charger therapy these days, I need it.

I was kind of wondering where you got off to. I keep forgetting that other people have real lives and do not live the life of a hermit as I do. You have to admit once  you had it back on its' wheels that you probably got a little excited. Once you can see those classic lines again it starts to feel like it is all worth while.
Springtime does'nt hurt either. :icon_smile_big: :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

Honestly the knee injury/surgery has been the biggest reason I haven't been around much. It makes it difficult to work on the car.  Getting her on all 4s  was probably the most excited I've been for months! Now I just need to replace a rocker and then start the bodywork.

Rocker work, finally.   :2thumbs:

Out with the old.

In with the new.

I haven't burnt it in yet but the plan is to do that tomorrow.  I decided to throw some primer and whatever paint we had laying around at it, just for good measure.  Is it overkill, yes.  Am I ever going to have that rocker off in order to do it again... I certainly hope not!

Looking good Ted!  :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs:   Were those complete rockers, or just the skins?

Thanks, Bob!  They were complete rockers but seeing as how I changed my mind on replacing them after I burnt in the new quarters ( :brickwall: ) I cut out as much of the old as I could w/o removing the quarter.  They will be brand new except for the portion under the quarter, which wasn't in terrible shape anyway.

I have been working on the car periodically and have actually made a lot of headway.... this will cover the past several months of work.

I came across some original disc spindles a while back.  They even came with old calipers so I threw those on and checked clearances with the new rims.  :whew:

Anyway, I tried out this all-metal stuff and I was quite impressed with it.  It went on great and was easy sanding.

(http://i812.photobucket.com/albums/zz45/TSmithae/70%20Charger/20140709_155455_zpsgpqbgpv4.jpg) (http://s812.photobucket.com/user/TSmithae/media/70%20Charger/20140709_155455_zpsgpqbgpv4.jpg.html)

I managed to get the c-pillars to the point where I was happy with the all-metal.  I worked on slinging more all-metal at the dutchman, where it had to be sliced and extended and also the rear valence where it also had to be sliced and extended; however, I failed to take many pictures. I welded my wire loom covers in place and also drilled the holes for the charger script and had a brief moment of brilliance... I wound up taking masking tape and running it along the old quarter, marking the edges, marking the holes, and then measuring at a few points.

I managed to put the final coat of paint on the dash frame, which will be taken home with me to assemble as I have time at my new house. I also welded in the buddy seat brackets and fixed the holes for the C pillar scripts. I have a long list of things to do tomorrow...  :burnout:

I was waiting on a buddy with a frame rack to fix my front frame rail and I got sick of waiting... so I did it myself with some heat and a fine precision adjustment tool.

However, the bumper and everything up front seemed to fit just fine.

I got my uncle to come over and help me out and we got the K-frame out and upon removal I found another section I need to fix... the frame rail has a section underneath the shock that has a couple holes...  :hammer:  I will fix that tomorrow and I think that is the last bit of metal that I haven't gotten a chance to look over.  Fingers crossed that this is true and will be my last metal replacement.   :fingers crossed:

Not a ton of work on the car lately.  i had to move and with my work schedule I don't get a chance to make the 3 hr drive to where the car is located.  I will soon be moving to Madison and will be much closer to the car.

I have been working on restoring my second grill (sold the first one to pay bills...  :brick wall: )

Before...

After a LOT of time.  This one was split completely down the middle.  The plastic near the door supports was split almost straight through. The one side had sagged an inch or better and was cracked back about 3 inches.

My back is fine, however, my knee is still pretty destroyed.  I'm not on crutches currently.  I need another surgery but there is no telling when the insurance will finally approve that...  :rotz:

Thanks guys.  It does really suck being so far from the car.  That will soon be remedied though.

The grill looks great. Hate that you are so far away from the car. How is your back. I hope you don't need those crutches in the background there. :2thumbs:

My back is fine, however, my knee is still pretty destroyed.  I'm not on crutches currently.  I need another surgery but there is no telling when the insurance will finally approve that...  :rotz:
Sorry I forgot it was your knee that put you out of commission for a while. Don't know why I thought it was your back. :eek2: Well. Luckily they are giving you an option to fix it. A few years ago the looked at mine and said. " Yeah. Your just old and so is your knee so it's going to be crappy from now on." At any rate glad to see you back at it. :2thumbs:

No need to be sorry Steve.  It felt really good to be working towards getting something done on the car again.  I don't know what else I can get done on it until after I move. I really need to finish my rotisserie and get the thing painted...

Your car is coming along nicely I see.  Looks good!

I finally had a weekend of progress that fell like progress.  It's funny how you have months/years where you feel like you are going backwards and then there's one weekend of what feels like progress.

Before

When I finished priming my uncle and I went to the gas station to get a drink/snack and this guy rolls up.  He's one of the guys that runs Mopar City in Oregon IL and this was one of their clients cars.

To each their own. IMHO, the 69 was the least attractive grille design.  :shruggy:

I wanted a 69 Charger for many years, starting when I first saw the General Lee on TV.
When I bought my 70 in March of 2000, my plan was to swap on a 69 front clip. The 70 front end grew on me and in a short time, I had zero interest in the idea. I love the 68 and 70 designs.

for me too. 70 is the best and 68 2nd. never liked 69 style

I don't dislike any of them. I like them in order. 68,79,70 and not just cause of the grille. I like the 68-69 bumper better.

For me, it's a toss up between the 68 and 70 front end, but definitely prefer the 69 and 70 tail lights, so for that reason, I obviously bought a 70.

But I could do without the fenders and hood made of unobtainium.......

I used to have a favorite, and then it changed, and now I wonder why the heck I was so hung up on these little details. All 3 are awesome cars.   :2thumbs:

Agreed Dino! I personally love the 70 for numerous reasons but would be very proud to own any of them!

And with a little bit of luck, and a lot of hard work, maybe one of each some day.   :icon_smile_big:   :2thumbs:

Now I like the way you think! However, for me, I would want one of each model from 1970; Charger, Chellenger, Coronet, Super Bee, Dart, a wagon, and a C body even!

Hey there's nothing wrong with that! I think about getting a nice luxurious c-body land yacht from time to time.
