Title: Strange hole in bottom side of B-body dash frame??
Post by: rikubot on December 23, 2018, 09:14:09 PM
Got a weird hole on the underside of my dash frame. I thought it was cut in there by a previous owner but I have recently found a picture of another one like it. Any ideas or answers?

Rear window defogger switch.  I'll post a pic here in a bit.

Wow that's cool. Didn't know my car had that. Was that a special option? I'm trying to find out more about the car as it has no fender tag or build sheets.

pic.  Yep, option.  Motor assembly mounted under the package tray.

Mine had the insert but none of the other pieces. Was it a rare option? Maybe tended to be an SE option?

More Canadian cars had it for obvious reasons   :2thumbs:
Rear defrost motor sucked air down from one of the rear speaker grills on the parcel shelf behind the back seat and blew it up the middle vent for the back window
So if you look at one of your rear speaker holes compared to the other you might be able to tell it was mounted

68 Charger had the switch on the dash cluster

The rear defogger was optional on all models at extra cost. See the page at http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/images/dealerships/DealershipDataBook/1970/70_Charger0019.jpg

My 1970 Sport Satellite 4-door with the standard cluster has it;

If you had an air grabber hood did the switch also mount in the same spot ?

Thanks all. So are those ALL of the codes one could have? Didn't see paint or stripe codes, prob a bunch of others. I'd like to make a fender tag for the car showing what options I finish it with.

I'm almost positive I threw the black metal part of the switch away. I had no idea it was a mopar part and thought someone else put it there. Anyone have a spare? Just the mount for the switch, I'm not looking to replace the whole system.

Edit: I found my little plate! I was almost sure I had thrown it away. I'll make a block off plate like the map liight delete. Not a big deal but I hate the feeling of throwing away a perfectly good piece of mopar genuine parts. Especially B body. Stuff is tough to come by these days.

Same hole location is also used as a convertible top switch on 69-70 with rallye dash. Did the black on button have writing on the back?

Right you are!

Here's some pics of a switch that I have. Got it from a 1970 standard dash that I bought at a swap meet. In this case the switch was used for rear window BUT rear window in this situation was for rear power window on a station wagon B Body. So this switch actually serves three purposes:

1. R.WIND = Rear window defog on non station wagon & non convertible cars.
2. R.WIND = Rear power window for station wagon cars.
3. TOP = Convertible cars open/close top.

This dash had some goodies on it due to it being from a station wagon. It had the power window relay and wire pigtail uncut!

This switch and plate(not pictured) are available if anyone's looking.

You guys are awesome. Great information all the way around and I'm glad I kept my plate. I was almost sure it was some sort of car alarm insert of some kind.

just in case you want to get a rear deffog as an upgrade on your car's equippment... Blower and ducts are hard to come by with the switch. Harness can be made at home

I think I've seen pictures and from what I can tell it looks like a little hair dryer. It's super cool but I done think I'll need it. I live in CO but I don't really plan on driving when it's super cold. Dunno yet though, might turn into a daily (if I ever finish it). If you had the choice to drive a '69 charger to work or a '00 Bonneville, 9 time outta ten you'd pick the charger  :icon_smile_big:

That is really cool. Where does the skinny wide part mount up to?

This site has been a great resource for me. I'm trying to confirm that my car was an R/T SE. I have no build sheet, no fender tag, and the vin is of no help (if you get my drift). The sail panels had two holes drilled close indicating the SE emblems, which actually came with it. The tail panel is also drilled for the R/T emblem which also came with it and after media blasting it all appears to be factory with no shoddy welding coving up old holes. The deck lid has had six holes brazed in that are in the exact location as a luggage rack. I was also wondering if that defogger might be an indicator of the SE package.

deffog is not part of the package really.

the skinny duct mounts to the package tray

and fits on top with a bezel like this ( maybe slightly diff allong the years ):

the package got the hole for it:

The rear defoggers were a stand alone extra cost option, not part of any package.

I'd like to make a fender tag for the car showing what options I finish it with.

Fake tags can ruin the car owners reputation & put the car itself in a very bad light due to the owners actions.  :Twocents:

Map pocket on doors panels, Leather front seats, woodgrained finish, pedal bezels, emblems, light package, hood tunring signals... those are the signals for the SE package

Anybody have a picture of a rear defroster and two back speakers set up ?

Wow, well this is pretty much a comprehensive guide to the rear window blower defogger with detailed drawings. Thanks for the info. Judging that the switch alone is going for $100, looks like this will be one option I'm going to have to do without. I might stick the plate back in there or make a little block-off plate.

Nacho, what would be included in the light package, and what do the pedal bezels look like?

I think that was not an option for any B body ( even less 69 ) but E bodies and C bodies. There is an adaptor, BUT, it doesn't fit at least on 71/74 B's

Herea pic, althought speaker and blower are not correctly installed... speaker should be straight to the top opening

Maybe can be found cheaper.

BLOWER SETUP can be on $50-80 as much

That would be a cool accessory to have. I wonder how the factory wired all of this into the fuse block. I have wired a few standard accessories and already it seems like I have too many pigtails and it scares me a little.

It was easier to grab the manual than stick my head up under the dash, LOL.  It piggybacks onto one of the fuses.

Thank you  :2thumbs:
Seems simple enough. I do wonder what a block looks like from the factory with all the pigtails comin off there. I will take a picture of mine next time I work on it. The dash is out of the car right now so I can get a good picture.
