I'm too far away in Northern Utah, but the Grand Canyon is a must see off of 66 in AZ.

Sent ya a text mike. Do not live on Route 66. But not sure what route your taking once you hit the end of Route 66, or if your taking it all of the way. Live in central Indiana. If your anywhere in this state and have problems give me a shout and I will come.

I have sent a PM. If you have trouble Ill get you a truck and trailer if reasonably close. I guess you will do some trial miles around the shop before heading out? I don't trust my cars that much but I'm not GYC.

Mike and Michael,
I don't know where your headed when you finish up Route 66 on the east end in Chicago?
But if your getting on I-80 or I-90 Or the Indiana Toll Road to head east or south were
close by in northwest Indiana. Let me know if you need our contact info?

This place was actually really nice and had a lot of cars and it was free:

http://www.russellsttc.com/NewMuseum.html

They had a bunch of Linegfelter and Callaway stuff that was pushing big HP. Also a lot of nice memorabilia.

Sendona, Az, Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park were all awesome and worth the trip.

Route 66 gets pretty desolate out here in the West.  I'm at least in Az.  If you have trouble on that section give me a call but I'm at least 3 hours away from the nearest point and about 4 1/2 hours froth furthest.  I do have an enclosed trailer that a 'Bird will fit into.
Have fun.  Driving my hemi 500 on the road a couple of years ago was a blast!!

Just out of curiosity, will any of GYC film crew ride with or follow you?  Seems like they would possibly want to film some of the journey.

Update on our Cross country trip, today Michael, and I Left graveyard cars about 3pm , headed for the coast of Oregon,( to start our way down toward the California coast.) Our Bird performed flawlessly , we hit a little rain, driving through the mountains, saw a herd of elk, ended up putting 180 miles on the bird .Our first stop is to ride the sand dunes of Oregon(on Dirtbike or 4 wheeler). We found the riding area took a few pics of the bird, "tomorrow we ride" !!!!

Aside from the other car already being finished several years ago, these cars still take a lot of money to restore.    Hard to financially swing two cars being worked on at one time.

Looks like yous having one heck of a trip. Gotta give you props on driving the car. I know people looked at me weird this weekend for just putting 800 miles on my car. I would love to do a cross country trip in mine.

Well, there was a white Superbird sighting in Missouri this afternoon...

Mike and Michael intended to make a brief stop on their Route 66 voyage, and called me ahead of time - so I was waiting by the shop door with camera in hand for their arrival.

Title: Re: LOCATIONS ON ROUTE 66 (we're off!!)
Post by: hemigeno on July 29, 2014, 07:55:30 PM
While waiting for their arrival, I called my local friend & 'Bird owner Rich Bolzenius, who abandoned his wife at an auction and rushed home to get his FY1 6-pack bird out of his garage.  You can see him in the first photo on the left, and the side of his bird in the background.  Nothing like having another wing car show up in a small town to bring out the fellow WingNuts...

After exchanging pleasantries and just beginning to talk about their journey, history of the car, etc., Mike noticed his wing now had a slight defect...

:o

Post by: hemigeno on July 29, 2014, 07:58:00 PM
Here was the culprit (sorry for the blurry pic, I'm still not adjusted to this camera)

There was rust/corrosion on all but just a small sliver of metal, which means that fracture had been present for at least a little while.  I didn't look closely enough to see if the wing had been painted separately at GYC or not - but that bolt was a grenade with the pin pulled.

Mike could not get the other side's bolt to budge without stripping the allen-head capscrew, so taking the horizontal section off was not an option.  The bird would have looked a little odd for the rest of their trip with two uprights sticking up and no horizontal wing, so we put on our thinking caps for a different solution.

Post by: hemigeno on July 29, 2014, 08:05:12 PM
There's a pretty good chance the remaining fine-thread bolt section is not going to come out of that extruded aluminum wing without a great deal of difficulty.  Since it's pretty secure right where it is, and it's made of some pretty good steel, we decided to drill & tap a smaller bolt hole in the middle of the existing capscrew's body.  I scrounged around the shop here and found a couple of 1/4-20 bolts with about the right length.

Here's Mike doing the drillwork:

Post by: hemigeno on July 29, 2014, 08:08:52 PM
After a little fettling and finding just the right combination of washers, the wing seems pretty secure - although I'd probably be guilty of taking a peek at that corner of the rear view mirror pretty often myself...

With the work done, it was time for some quick visiting and photos.

Mike and Michael have already logged 3,500 (well, actually 3,500.1 when he pulled in the shop) miles on their trip so far, and 500 of those were put on today.  He said it's been a blast to drive, and hasn't really given them any major problems so far.

Since they have another 750 miles to drive before they get home, and with their plan to be home tomorrow evening, it was time for them to head out back to the Mother Road.

Gentlemen, it was a pleasure to meet you.  I hope I was something of a small blessing to you along the way, and it was a sincere joy to see you guys out enjoying such a fantastic road trip in a fantastic (wing)car.  Have a safe remainder of the trip!!!

Geno

Not the first repair I can think of that has been done on weary travelers cars in that shop! Brake boosters, voltage regulators and now wing repairs. Thank God for Geno's muscle car pit stop.  :smilielol: Three wings in the building at one time. That's a new record isn't it? Oh and the red one and the yellow one together again under one roof. Been a while on that too if you follow me.  ;)  Good write up Geno.  :2thumbs:

I didn't think about the "reunion" of the red & yellow cars until you mentioned it, but you're right.  Rich has had his car at the shop before, and my car has been at his house before also (albeit riding on the rollback bed of my 2-ton truck) - but this is probably the first time his car has been at the shop since mine's been done.  I was a little distracted by the Hill's visit, but you're right.

Geno's Musclecar Pit Stop... I should get a sign or banner.  :coolgleamA: :2thumbs:   The times I've helped out with some repairs is still way fewer than others have done out on the road somewhere (Doug/Pettybird is one of several side-of-the-road or hotel-parking-lot master mechanics I've seen in action).  That's a truly fantastic thing about this hobby... the number of great people you meet, and how willing they are to help one another.

I'll be interested to hear how the Hills fared on the balance of their trip.  They plan to be home this evening, so mabye they'll check in with an update soon.

Geno, Michael and i would like to thank you again for the help.

Well I made a phone call to my wife (the boss) , to see how things were going at our family printshop , she told me things were running smoothly, with that said, i mentioned to her that Michael had never seen Nashville, and we would like to stop off there for the day, .....So as i type this, we are still in Nashville and plan to plan to get home tomorrow night.

We will have covered over 4400 miles in our 10 day trip.
Superbird averaged 12/13 miles per gallon, With a fuel bill of about $1400.

I'll be sure to post alot of pics when I get home of our adventures.
Again , thanks Gene.

You'd have had to be pretty light on your feet to make it, Allen...  Mike called to let me know they were stopping by when he was about 30 miles away from the shop, and he had truly planned to stay only about 30 minutes.  Had it not been for the wing repair, you'd have got here about the time the dust died down from them leaving town.

It would have been great to see you again, and I still haven't had the time to check out your black car as closely as I'd like.  Would have been a great time.  The ugly step child title was already taken though, by my dad's '78 Lincoln Town Car - which we affectionately refer to as the "Linc-abago"

Day 8 of our cross country trip.
We've logged over 3000 miles so far ( from our starting point of Springfield Oregon) we've hit a lot of the small diners, and route 66 landmarks. The half way point has a cool cafe that is located exactly 1\2 way between California and Chicago. (1139 miles either way.)..... we have passed through Texas and we are currently in Oklahoma headed towards the very tip of Kansas then Missouri.
The last picture shows how I can sleep comfortable at night...rotor button in my motel room every night.

OK OK were Home... I just woke up from a weeks long Nap!
heres more pics of our route 66 trip
1st pic show us drying off engine bay after a storm caught us in New Mexico. ( Drowned the car our in a flood of water on the road)
2nd pics shows, I did have Michael go slightly above the posted speed limit.
3rd pics shows how I slept better at night....( still got up to check on car) but not EVERY 30 mins..lol

POSTED FROM MY FACEBOOK PAGE

Day 9 of our cross country trip.....lots of hwy driving yesterday. We left Oklahoma, made it through Kansas, Missouri, and into Mt Vernon Illinois. (Driving 610 miles).
We stopped off to see a friend of ours (Gene) . Gene has one of the nicest (if not the Nicest Daytona in the country.) It won best of show at the 2012 mopar nationals.
While we were there, we had to fix a broken bolt in one end of the rear wing stabilizer. ( it had sheared off ).
Gene ( hemigeno )...as known on the Dodge charger.com discussion board , really helped us out by allowing us to use his shop tools to extract the broken bolt , drill, tap and re thread a smaller " makeshift" fix to get us home.. a friend of Gene 's (Richard Bolzenius) showed up with his 6pk 4 speed superbird also.
After leaving his shop we saw the St Louis arch, at that point, It was time to set our GPS Toward home. (785 miles) . We wish we could have driven the rest of Route 66, but we have to get Michael moved into his apartment this weekend to start his college classes .
It's been a Blast driving route 66.
Look for one more update tomorrow that will show some cool "random " pics from our trip.
We will have covered over 4400 miles in our 10 day trip.
Superbird averaged 12/13 miles per gallon, With a fuel bill of about $1400.
We are missing our family and sleeping in our own beds.
I am also missing my beautiful wife Jen , .... (shes in last pictures posted here.).
She kept things going on the home front while we enjoyed the ultimate Father/Son trip.

When you said route 66 I didn't realize you would change directions in IL

We were only 30 minutes away when you were in Mt Vernon would have been glad to get the car out and come over to meet you

Sorry me missed you.  It was kinda hard to keep up with who lives where when you're passing from state to state

Yes it is I'm sure we all often travel right past a member and never know it.   I thought you were doing the whole 66 route so thought you be going north and the closest you would have been was 1 1/2 hours away so I had not messaged you.

Would have been nice to have met you.... Perhaps someday will be at the same meet

Glad you had a very enjoyable and safe trip
