Title: Found a ‘70 R/T
Post by: Johnnymopar on July 13, 2018, 02:23:36 AM
Hi, this is the first thread I've started here.  Long been searching for a dream Mopar, in particular a 69 or 70 Charger and am a Mopar fan since I was a little kid.  I'm not so much into a numbers matching one, I want a black car with some ideas I have for a custom stripe.
So... I found a 70 R/T, this is the decode of the fender tag I did:

R22 - am 8 track, V6W - Longitudinal stripe white, Y07 - Canadian order, 26 - " radiator

M25 - wide sill molding, M31 - belt molding, N85 - tachometer, N88 - auto spd control, P31 - power windows

C55 - bucket seats, G33 - LH remote race mirror chrome, H51 - single air w/ heater, J25 - 3 spd wipers, L31 - fender mount turn signals, M21 - roof drip molding

V1W - Vinyl roof white, A01 - light pkg, A35 - tow pkg, A47 - sp. ed. pkg, B51 - pwr disc brakes, C16 - console

FY1 - top banana colour, CRXA - black vinyl/leather seats, TX9 - black int. paint, C16 C1... - order number

E86 - 440 4v hp, D32 - auto 727 trans   XS29 U0G - spec. price class 2 dr hardtop 440 '70 St. Louis assembly

This is my first decode so there may be mistakes.  Some of the numbers were rusty and I went from my phone pic.  I will investigate it further and see if I can post a pic.  Peace.

Any input is appreciated; stock restore vs. customizing it, rarity, value, what to watch for etc.  I haven't talked price yet but I think the owner may have a value in mind.  The car is in a barn and needs restoration but appears pretty solid at first glance and complete.

Good find  :2thumbs:

Lots of interesting stuff on that fender tag
Are all those things still on the car ?
Think the main thing to find out is if the frame rails are good

Restoring to stock would seem like a high dollar car these days, very well optioned and FY1 would be cool.

Black and custom stripe...  depends all on how tastefully it's done - it's narrowing the resale pool in any case.  If you plan to hang on to it and don't mind angering the Mopar gods then it's your call on the color change.

FYI, decodes are usually done from lower left to upper right, alphabetical from 3rd line up.  Here it is in more conventional format decoded, I tweaked a few items.

QuoteE86 - 440 4bbl
D32 - auto 727 trans
XS29 - Charger R/T
U  - 440 4bbl
0  - 1970
G  - St. Louis assembly plant
FY1 - top banana colour
CRXA - charcoal/black vinyl/leather seats
TX9 - black upper door frame
C16  - December 16, 1970 assembly date
C1xxxx - order number (Canadian export)
V1W - Vinyl roof white
A01 - light pkg
A35 - tow pkg
A47 - SE pkg
B51 - pwr disc brakes
C16 - console
C55 - bucket seats
G33 - LH remote mirror chrome
H51 - A/C
J25 - 3 spd wipers
L31 - fender mount turn signals
M21 - roof drip molding
M25 - wide sill molding
M31 - belt molding
N85 - tachometer
N88 - auto spd control
FY1 - top banana (duplicate typo?)
R22 - am 8 track
V6W - Longitudinal stripe white
Y07 - Built to Canadian spec
26 -  26" radiator

Damn, it's a cool car as it left the factory.  I personally would keep it stock.

70 Chargers are great looking machines, build it as you see fit, it's your money and time... don't worry about the "market value" or the next owner.... enjoy it

+1

Build it to drive, and enjoy it.  Those are the only rules.

Thank you for your help and input.  I posted the codes in the same way they are on the tag.  I corrected it today, the FYI near the top is actually a P31, hard to read the rusty part of tag in a pic.

Any ideas from this pic roughly where I should be at on price?  I want to be fair to both selller and myself.  I know I need a full inspection, I will provide more details as I get them.

Fender tags are read bottom row first and left to right

Sitting kind of low in the dirt
Like my first post find out if the frame rails are good from sitting like it is
Looks like a vinyl top car so check the lower corners of back window area next

Not sure what part of the world you are in or the car
How well hidden from regular public view is the car ?
Why is it getting sold now ?
All things that can affect price
Start at $5000 and go up from there
How bad do you want the car?
Is this the first one you have tried to buy ?
Do not be surprised if you have to pay $15000 or more to get it from the seller if they really know what they have

I would not be surprised at $15-25k to buy, plus another $70k to restore in this out of control market we're in.

Great info 70 Sublime.  The car is hidden from public view in a shed away from the road on acreage.
The owner will be retiring/ leaving North America and realizing he will not get to it.  I think he may have other Mopars, stay tuned for further updates.  This car is not advertised.  I lucked out in finding it.
I want a Charger (or my fav, a 70 'cuda) fairly bad but I'm patient.
First I've found that was a non advertised car.
The owner knows what he has, the challenge may be convincing him of what it is worth pre restoration.
I will be inspecting it closer soon and will try to get it on a lift.
It had a white vinyl top, cool combo with yellow.

IMO, The really hard part will be dealing in Canada, because if the car hits the wider open market "advertised" you can expect an absolute gong show ?

Depending upon how intact it is originally, Engine/Trans #'s etc., and how the underside looks for rot, I think you can expect to pay $25K Canadian within the "fair" range ?
To then complete a decent restoration here in Canada, expect a further $75K minimum, and most probably more.

NICE Car by the numbers !  :2thumbs:

That is a rad car.
We have some cool options here, but yet overall value as it sits is primarly held back by the auto trans and poor condition.
$15k is about right for this I think.
Up side is.. Cruise, pw windows, 8 track, cool stripe & color all tell me personally to restore the car rather then build it your way.
If it is numbers matching it would almost be wrong not too..
But if you got it you could always flip it for a base model xp car if your bent on building a custom.

I'd guestimate about $15k depending on #'s & condition. I'd restore that one back to original. Find a lame base 318 Charger to Customize. LEON.

Chargers are very hard to find
Even harder to find in a condition ( that looks from the photo ) that you do not need to replace everything

Buy it if you can

Do what ever you want to it if your dream car is different from the fender tag
Try to avoid cutting it up for wheel tubs etc and just keep everything from the car in a big box that does not meet your vision
Some day a few years from now or many years from now the next owner can decide to go back to fender tag or not
A bright red ( or bright green FJ5  :2thumbs: ) Charger will be just as fun to own as a yellow one
