Title: Old car parts online?
Post by: lloyd3 on November 20, 2019, 11:17:55 AM
We need a starter for this '60 Dodge my son and I are working on. Too old for NAPA evidently. I see stuff online but dont have a clue as to who's decent and who's  a scammer.  Any suggestions as to who I might want to deal with?

Any chance of just taking it to an electric motor type shop and just getting it rebuilt ?

Well, after talking to the local NAPA store, that might just be the best option.  Pre-1962 electrical systems are very different,  evidently.

Natcho:  Saw that. Prices for this are all over the place. I just talked to a rebuilder shop in Denver and was quoted 4-weeks and $350(!).  Now...there are, evidently, long nose and short nose versions of this unit and since I'm  in Omaha today I won't be able to determine that one. But....$120 versus $350...gee whiz! One clearly needs to shop carefully first.  With shipping that $120 starter becomes $150.  I was tempted to just grab it until I saw that.  Wish I knew how to determine  what we need remotely.

take a few minutes,,it could bee lots of stuff on a 59-60 yr old rig..???  weak battery or low charging?? bad connection or ground?? weak start relay,,  dirty gummed up shaft or inner electrics?? when I was young I swapped out a starter and it was a bout shot ignision switch...

dunno on long and short nose version. Maybe block family related ?

agreed on the hammer... BTDT LOL. Usually the guilty on that are sized bushings, making the armature get stuck with fields

Had a Scout II that was a hammer job for years...

My wife could do it in pumps and a skirt, which was quite impressive when she was hauling co-workers.
