The only consolation was they all came with super strong bumber bars (desperately needed for stopping) if you wanted to stop, all you had to do was run into the car in front of you. And no damage done! :yesnod:

I don't think the first one is. Very difficult to do but if you look to the left side of the photo and note how sharply the rear quareter window comes down on the other side you can see it isn't a Charger. The girl on the right was carefully assembled though. :drool5:

You're right, looking at it again I'd say a '69 Roadrunner. Going by the vent window (which is the same for the Charger) but also the angle of the "post" on the drivers side.
Yes, the first one is a 2nd gen charger. I'm on a laptop. I can tilt the screen. I don't know how, but it does show body lines, all of them :drool5: I can see the body line from the door indent under the vent window.
You're right it is there. Very distracting photo to try and spot details like that.

Wow so it looks like my first instincts were right. If the woman got her ass off the car we would be able to tell if there was the indent on the door to once and for all say it was a Charger.
I think Stroker is right, the body line for the "double diamond" looks to definitely be there and judging by the placement of the door locks I will guess its a 69 (it could be a 70 but I like to think its a 69). I wonder if there are more pics from the photo shoot out there someplace.
I have a short film in my favorites list of a blonde having some fun behind the wheel of a black 69 charger. The only reason I know it's a 69 in that film is because of the seats. I wonder if it's from the same company. Sorry, I can't post a link, it's XXX :drool5: :drool5: :drool5:

Not 100% sure, but the first picture of the gold Charger looks to be on the back of MCG new issue. It has a key hanging from it.I'm at work now and the issue is home so I can't check .
Not the one with Evernham on the front?
I just got it and didn't read it yet just glanced. It has the girl on the cover with the blue AAR.

Wouldn't younger buyers in that day be more interested in a Dart, or a Mustang or something? Charger always seems like it would appeal to an older, more well-heeled buyer both then and now...

Back in that day (as I remember it) big cars were the norm and bigger meant more power and more respect. Most of the darts back then were considered old people cars because most of them had the leaning tower of power. The barracuda was popular though and Mustangs were "OK" and nothing more till you got to the 70-72 models (still very cool) which is the same time the Valiants were transformed into the Duster which moved a few people toward the smaller bodies cars as far as Mopar was concerned.

Nice find Tan Top. I haven't seen that one before either.
It looks like the Car and Driver Magazine '68 because its got the arrow emblem on the sail panel. An early build.
It would be great to see a better quality clip of this, although there is much more animation than actual driving shots.

yes , I thought that , looks like the 71 race season , & Petty still running a F series roadrunner body :shruggy: would of though he would of had the latest hardware , will have a look later & try to find what race that is :scratchchin:
Could it be so early that his short track car wasn't reskinned yet?
Maybe, he thought the 70 body style was more competitive. :scratchchin: Maybe the 71 body style got wrecked and the 70 was a backup :scratchchin:
Possibly. The interesting thing is that he had just come off negotiating Petty Enterprises as the NASCAR source for Chrysler (ther real reason Richard Petty came back??) so he should have had no shortage of bodies or chassis.

just looked it up in the book 40 years of stock car racing
Richard Petty ran the 70 Plymouth body in these below . the rest of the races showed , he entered a 71 Plymouth . :shruggy:
race 1 - Riverside CA motor trend 500 , Riverside January the 10th 1971 ( 500 miles ) on 2.62 miles paved road course , finished 20th -engine problem.
race 6 - Richmond VA ( Richmond 500 ) March 7th 1971 (271 miles) on .542 mile paved track , finished first
race 34 - Winston- Salem NC (Myers brothers Memorial ) August 6th 1971 on 62.5 miles on quarter mile paved track, finished second .
race 38 - Columbia SC ( sandlapper 200 ) August 27th 1971 100 miles on half mile paved track , finished first
race 47 - North Wilkesboro , NC ( Wilkes 400 ) November 21st 1971 250 miles on .625 paved track . finished third
Those are some amazing photos tan top! Thank you!
I guess that would make it at Riverside then. That's pit road at the top of the photo, and I don't see a fuel inlet on the left side. The Charger has it's inlet blocked off. I guess it's a safe bet that this car is just a short track car with a road course thrown in.

also going getting a bit side tracked , in the above thread , if you scroll down near the bottom , you will see a 68 charger Sail panel / C pillar .... yep has the charger name plate & side ways arrow , well that link ! the sideways arrow picture come from don't work now , but check this out below

same car !! look at the holes for the side ways arrow on the sail panel & looks like it was like it from new ! :scratchchin: also shows SPD 730 , August 30th 1967 , if i'm not mistaken , also can see every thing an early 67 build 68 in those pictures , skeleton inner deck lid frame , extra rear light panel supports , white red & blue , upper door pad emblem , early (67) steering wheel horn centre ? :scratchchin:
 :2thumbs:
I must have either missed that original image in the post, or at least completely forgot about ever seeing it. I'd love to get an original hard copy version of that ad to add to my collection.
As for the arrow emblem, well spotted. It does look legitimate. There can't be many cars that came from the factory like that, if it's the real deal.

If you have to use it, wouldn't that be an arrow down situation?
Some Charger ink.
:2thumbs:
Stripe on the first one reminds me of Starsky and Hutch along with DMCL.
Your right ghoste, probably wanted a Torino , but this all he could afford or find
Thanks to all who add and post photo's
Love all these photo's and add's from the day :2thumbs:
Car looks new though so I'm thinking he was well ahead of the appearance of the Striped Tomato. Maybe the producers or someone in vehicles associated with the show saw THAT very Charger first and it inspired the stripe on the Torino. :scratchchin:

I see what you mean, almost as if the car was photoshopped onto the rest.
Follow the top of the board from left to right, you will see the edge of board running though the charger, then look on right side of board, see the edge of board running though the tail end.
The top of charger, tail corner and front tire had been added on to the billboard.
That looks awesome. Not sure that it's genuine though... :scope:

The blue 68 charger in post #360 is my fathers hemi car parked in front of the apartment we lived at in 1968. The road in the background is Pennsylvania avenue just outside of Washington DC.
Thanks
Pat
That's cool! Its almost strange now to think of Hemi cars just parked in the lot of your apartment complex because they were just cars that we drove..
That picture was taken in the winter and you can still see the snow tires on the back. My dad would drive that car about 30 miles to work each day. He only own the car about a year and a half and sold it to a young kid who proceeded to wrap it around a telephone pole just a few months later. I'm not sure the car exist anymore :-(
Thanks

I wouldn't do it myself but I'm really digging the photo with the Coronet side scoops on the Charger.
I think the red 70 a couple pics up is Bulls (Curtis) old car.

I'm more liking the whole 1970-ish booger up your car with "stuff" attitude of it than the actual appearance. It just brings up fuzzy memories of when people started adding all kinds of crap to their car. And really I guess they always did and always will but that pic seems to hit home for some reason. (but still not a good looking thing to do)

Cool, I wonder if that is either the wildfire car or the green with envy car? Or a new one.
Detroit Dragway Summer of 1966 I think.
lot of good coverage of Bobby Isaac #71 running the 1970 Nashville 420

Hey Tan Top, ever seen this one before?
I came across it today and was wondering if it was a magazine ad or from a sales brochure.
It would be good to see an un-cropped version of it.

Nice find TT.
I tried to bid on it but they would not ship outside of the US.
I would have paid a lot more than it sold for. :brickwall:

oh right , that's interesting , I wonder :scratchchin:...... looks like it has a three speaker dash :scratchchin: just tried zooming in too , could well be a S81 wheel , think the standard half horn ring ones ! , rim would show up shiny / smooth , the one in the picture looks sort of textured grainy , although could be the old picture & i'm staring at it too much & seeing things :P :popcrn:

TT , when I zoom in on it , it looks like a booklet of some sort , not a 3 speaker dash , but I could be wrong , zooming in on that old picture isn't very good quality . Also , my car is an original rocker molding car , was trying to zoom in to see around then ww molding . Can't tell if that is a reflection of the black paint on the edge of the rocker , or is that a rocker molding ? Looking at the front ww molding , it looks thick on the bottom like it is a rocker molding there ? Sucks there is not a side view of this car !!!!!!!
Also , looking at the pass side rear window that is rolled up , does that appear to be tinted glass to you ? Mine is also an A/C car with tinted glass .

all from JAYBIRDS awesome web site above
Wish there was a different view of the black 69 R/T at Carl Burger Dodge , my 3x9 R/T SE came from Cali , not to far from that dealership . Mine is an early car with small bumperettes , and headrests , same as car in pic . Tried to zoom in on steering wheel to see if it is a woodgrain wheel .
Awesome thread BTW !!!!! :2thumbs:
oh right , that's interesting , I wonder :scratchchin:...... looks like it has a three speaker dash :scratchchin: just tried zooming in too , could well be a S81 wheel , think the standard half horn ring ones ! , rim would show up shiny / smooth , the one in the picture looks sort of textured grainy , although could be the old picture & i'm staring at the too much & seeing things :P :popcrn:
Mine is also an A/C car with tinted glass .
did not know or forgot yours had the M25 wide sill mouldings , I was was thinking , this car could well have the M25 option . looks like tinted glass to me , look at the driver side vent window , the boys jacket looks a little darker behind the glass , well it does on my computer screen , I've tried looking for the air temp decal on the passenger side rear side glass , but ! can't see anything , too much reflection I think . I did have a program on my old computer that would flip pictures over to a negative image , that use to help with stuff like this , not got it on this one .
wonder if Carl burger dodge still have the old sales records , in basement ! wish full thinking , but ! they are still operating i believe , & you never know ...
Being that was 46 years ago , that place has probably been remodeled a dozen times , if not moved location , and stuff like that would be long gone .
.
look at the date on the first picture ! july 69 !! & the grill center I piece has already been dented :P :o

yeah ! good spot :2thumbs: , I saw the rear valance seams filled with sealer , thought at first , maybe its because it was a early production pilot ( guess )car :shruggy: then saw the mirror , odd ! prolly see better out that one ;D , interesting forsure , think I can see rear seat belts too , & single exhaust , maybe a slant six or 318 or a 383 2barrel ! , red with white & a black top , cant recall any of the other promo / press article chargers having white interior , that I can remember :scratchchin: will have a look through some mags later :scratchchin:

as far as I know ! headrests were always & a option on a 68 charger , ever since it was introduced , & not a mid / little ways through the year , new option thing , headrests became standard equipment , January the first 69 , so you could have a early 69 charger , built 1968 with out headrests .
think front shoulder belts were optional on early built 68 cars .
Thank god they didn't go with the square mirror.

That YouTube video was great and it also lead me to this video. Although not really Charger related, the guy has a 1971 Plymouth Roadrunner and he says "383 Hemi" at the 2:35 mark. :smilielol: :smilielol: :smilielol:
Oh there is a tan 1972 Charger that appears briefly at the 4:55 mark in a parking lot, so I guess it is Charger related somewhat.

Those dirt track 70 Chargers look as if the fenders are shorter than production cars. The whole front end seems shorter.
I used to think that the 1970 fenders were longer than the 68 and 69 cars. I measured them and the fenders are actually the same length. The 70 bumper adds 2 1/2" to the end of the fender so it gives the illusion of a longer front end. The 68-69 fenders curve out at the edges/in toward the center. The 68-69 hood is surely shorter.
I love this thread!!!!!!!!!!!!
SO MANY cool photos!!
ON tan tops reply # 555 there is a photo/ side veiw of a blue Charger race car(#92) is this a 1969 with a 70 front,grill/bumper and fenders?
Because I noticed the 500/Daytona rear window, I thought that in 1970 Charger 500's were regular rear windows, and no A-pillar mounding, just a trim level option?
I get that race cars are banged up and prob use any parts they have pr can get,to keep it nice and race ready, but I saw this and was just wondering.
I also noticed a few Chargers with the "Shelby cobra/ corvette style side pipe exhaust" they look really cool, not for my car, must have been a 70's thing
(last photo in post 561, and again 5 photos down on 563, I think on purple and black Chargers, just to name a few)
very cool, it is cool to see some of the "fads" of the times that go in and out of style on these classic cars!!!!!!!

I see what you mean but it's just an illusion created by the huge amount the fenders are cut out backwards and forwards to fit those massive tyres in!
You are right..it is a matter of distorted proportions.

Interesting, a 73 with a 426 hemi. Not an option in 73.
I'm not sure they were still racing the Hemi in '73. I am pretty sure there was a 7.0L maximum displacement rule at the time, so any manufacturer's wedge engine could be up to 429ci.
There are some guys on here who know that period quite well and might chime in with the details.

I think that the non-Charger involved in the wreck (the one up top) was on an elevated higher speed road, lost control somehow and this was the result.
See arrows pointing to cars on other road.

Did a little research on NASCAR engine rules, and found this article:
https://www.hemmings.com/magazine/mus/2014/03/Rise-of-the-Small-Block---1972-Ford-Torino/3736031.html (https://www.hemmings.com/magazine/mus/2014/03/Rise-of-the-Small-Block---1972-Ford-Torino/3736031.html)
Apparently the 358ci max displacement was announced for the 1975 season, but really kicked in for 1976. Until then, there were a bunch of different restrictor plate or carburetor sleeve rules that were developed & seemed to constantly change, depending on the displacement or cylinder head type used. Here's some portions of the linked article, addressing NASCAR engine parameters:
Quote from: Matthew Litwin
On August 16, 1970, while big-blocks still reigned supreme, NASCAR mandated the first use of restrictor plates with maximum venturi openings of 1.25 inches. This was in response to the Grand National (now Sprint Cup) stockers racing near 200 MPH at the big superspeedways; the plates also reduced engine failures. But all engines are not created equal, and so the introduction of restrictor plates sparked a new horsepower debate between teams and NASCAR.
Restrictor-plate rules were refined for 1971. Ford's Boss 429 and Chrysler's 426 Hemi engines required plates with 1.25-inch venturi openings; the Ford 427 wedge used a plate with 1.50-inch openings; and the Chrysler 426 wedge was permitted to use 1.625-inch holes. Eventually, top tier teams made the switch from Hemi to wedge engines, but not without complaint; balking the loudest were the Hemi-powered independents who could barely afford to race as it was.
Rules were again revised for 1972. The plates were scrapped in favor of carburetor "sleeves." NASCAR deemed them a more effective method of leveling the field, given the variety of engines approved for competition. By 1973, it was a long list: Ford 429 and Chrysler 426 Hemis; Ford 429 street wedge; Ford 351; Chrysler 343; Chevy 350, 366 and 427 wedge engines; AMC 366 wedge; and Chrysler 426 wedge. Yet, even before the 1973 season was over, the plates once again replaced the sleeves, all while officials were open about phasing out the exotic big-blocks.
Reasons for the move were numerous, beginning with Detroit's own big-block abandonment. Cost, speeds and the first oil embargo were also catalysts, as was the spritely 351 Cleveland that Spartanburg, South Carolina's Bud Moore inserted into his 1972 Ford Torino....
.... In the summer of 1974, NASCAR stated that the new maximum displacement would be 358 cu.in., beginning with the '75 season; however, this didn't go into full effect until 1976. NASCAR has maintained that rule to this day, thanks in no small part to Moore's 351 Cleveland.
Hadn't seen this one before.
Lol...unfortunate sponsor name!

Wow 1977 just before the Dukes of Hazzard. Did you notice the bad editing in the Charger road rage scene? The guys in the '68 Charger when they did a close up of them, they're not even sitting in the Charger lol. It's a 4 door sedan of some model. WTF??
Look here:
I made it about 8 min into joyride, about two seconds past the Charger part.
But Staring Desi Arnaz JR!!!!!!!!(Lucy...............I am in a movie)
Robert Carradine
Melanie Griffith(way before the bad facelift)
and Music by ELO(Electric light Orchestra)
And a Dodge Charger, how can this NOT be a sweet ass film!!!!!
Also how the hell can the dude from revenge of the nerds, nail a young Melanie Griffith???
WTF??!!
I have a better shot at buying that, the one dude could super karate kick a Dodge Charger 100 feet into the air, and 1/4 way arcoss a pond!!!!
Also at this point The Charger must hold the world record for most amount of cars that go flying thru the air into a lake.
I love my Charger, but if one day I am driving down the road, and it suddenly jumps into the air and lands in a lake, well I cant say I havent seen it a thousand times before!!
Also at like 8:36 there is a blue Roadrunner/GTX parked on the right side of the screen.
Nicely summed that up. lol :2thumbs:

Interesting UK taken shot....don't quite understand it though. The yellow 68 has a 1973 (K reg number plate) that should end in an F and the red one has G reg plate (1969) like mine and should also have a F. Its not legal to have a number plate that makes the car appear newer than it is.....older is fine though.....interesting !
The only exception is if the cars were imported a VERY long time ago ....back then any imported car was treated as a new car....and registered as such....which was silly and caused much confusion and fraud as folks sold imported cars as newer than they were.....hence the change.. That's the only explanation I can think of.

Tan Top. that 68 Hemi Charger is delicious!!
I saved one of these pictures a long long time ago & posted on here somewhere, found the picture while searching tumbler or stiffspeed originally I think, anyways, short while after I first posted it a member on here, posted & said it was his Dads hemi charger from back in the day , he bought it new I believe :scratchchin:

Took a picture of a poster I bought almost 20 years ago. Dick Landy and his 68 at the starting line.
Sorry for the so so quality ::)
Wow, the Daytona pulling the dragster is one I would like to know more about!
We've seen Doug's boat-Tona, and Sean's red car pulling the white car on a trailer, but this one is new to me anyway...
Wish I knew more about it as well.

The blue 68 hemi charger was my fathers! This past holiday my mother found another cool picture that is tied to that car, it was the wheels that my father bought himself for Christmas in 1968 for his hemi charger. I'm the short one ;-)

Yep, was on FBBO and he wouldn't come clean as to whether he owned it or was just brokering the car. Didn't like people pointing out it wasn't a survivor or that his "little" crease in the quarter was pointed out publicly that it was FIVE + feet long !
I was actually quite interested, but he wasn't interested in giving honest answers.
Found the thread where Blinky started with this car

Wish there was a side view or interior shot of the black R/T . My 3x9 RT/SE came from Cali in 2003 , and resided not that far from this dealership . As the car in the pic , small front bumperettes early car and headrests should mean before Jan 1st car .Headrests therefore being an option . Looking at the pass side rear window , looks to be tinted , and can't really tell , but looks like might have rocker molding ( focus on front WW trim at bottom ) . Also looks to have a woodgrain wheel.
Wish there was interior shot , mine has column shift , six way , PW , AC .
Well, that showroom picture really tells a story...A DRIP pan under a NEW car? THis validates all my efforts to stop leaks. If the factory couldn't properly seal a brand new engine, what luck does a guy have with 50 year old parts? The OEMs really have improved gasket sealing in the time since. I have 320,000 miles on my 2007 Ram and it does not leak at all.

Wow could you imagine be the winner and having to house seven '68 Chargers? Keeping them all these years, having assigned Chargers for each day of the week and holding true to it all those years?
I'm sure that's not the case to whoever won that contest or we would've heard about it somewhere. You would be a rock star at the Mopar shows with seven'68 Chargers lined up.
Thanks for sharing TT.

The oil pan bolts on big block Mopar engines go through the pan rail into the open crankcase. They need thread sealer or they will leak oil.

Holy shit...REALLY ???
If true, that is a great thing to learn! It would clearly explain why I have had such shitty luck sealing up this engine! Son of a bitch...Now I want to get the car up on a lift and pull each bolt out one at a time....clean out the threaded holes and reinstall the bolts with a sealant.
Shoot, man, if this seals up my engine I will be quite grateful. Check back with me in a month or so.

NO they don't !They are BLIND HOLES in the Block !
That said, the Oil CAN migrate between the Oil Pan Gaskets & Windage Tray, then make it's way OUT around the Bolt Threads = LEAK !
Remove the Bolts one at a time, clean the Bolts, Spray and CLEAN the Holes/Bolts with Brake Clean & Blow Dry, then re-install with a silicone product called
"The Right Stuff". Never hurts to put a small dab of the Right Stuff UP into the Hole before re-installing the Bolt as well.... it will fill any potential voids around the Bolt that the Oil is migrating through as well.

Agreed. However since this film is in Canada, let me say I have seen a lot of different things that the manufacturers did in Canada. So anything is possible.
Most of those "different" things the manufacturers did in Canada happened before 1968, after that they pretty much towed the line. Anyway, I don't believe 3rd gen Chargers were built here.

Man, these cars always look goofy with stock wheels and tires. I see a Coronet at the end...
Kern Dog not near as goooooofy as those stupid Hot wheels rims and tires they are putting on a real cars now a days
Adjust your manner of taste. Bigger wheels allow for better brakes and MUCH better handling.
A drag strip will show you how fast the car is.
A road course will show you how fast the DRIVER is.
I prefer a great handling car over a real fast one.

None of these support big wheels looking good.
Well, find a 15" tire that fits over big brakes and provides the same handling as an 18" combo....
There isn't one.
I've noticed that the dudes that complain about the "Big Wheel" look are the guys that only drive in a straight line.

You told him to adjust his taste. I actually don't mind some of the bigger wheels. I was just stating that your comment don't support anything about looks only function.
Dare ya to drive the roads in lllinois with those hot wheels hope ya can afford new ones every couple hundred mile cause they cant handle pot holes. And that's both the wheel and tire. Just common sense better ride and better handling other wise why not put them on semis, planes and military vehicles

Another post about a member pulling out a couple of Chargers out of a junkyard reminded me of this day from about 20 years ago. This was a junkyard in Southern NH, I believe the name was Blanchards but I am not completely sure. The yard was amazing, the further you went in, the older the cars got, some in the weeds in the back were from the 30s and 40s.
These two Chargers were side by side, I was able to use a few of the chrome trim pieces for my car but I don't recall what else the cars had.
My brother in law was with me and tried buying some stuff for his 72 Maverick but the old guy in charge wanted insane prices for a couple of trim pieces so he left them.
Few years later I heard that this place was cleaned out and sold but I'm not even sure about that either, maybe someone here knows the story.
oh to be young again lol!
Appropriate for this time of the year.

Thank you , Tan Top !
These pictures are so cool. Way back in High school, late '70s, there was a '68 or '69 Charger that was green and had graphics/paint that looked like fish scales on the sides from the door scallop's back past the rear tires. Anybody here remember any cars that had a lace paint job.
About 5 years ago a friend of mine did a lace paint job on the roof of his 69 Dart.
There was a 68 Charger around here that had a huge portrait of Jimi Hendrix face on the decklid. Wish I had photos but never about that stuff back then.

Maybe one of the 4 slant six standard Chargers from Dodge City Dealership in Dallas is mine... Cannot find the picture right now, but the previous owner who restored it took a picture of the trunk lid with the Dodge City emblem...
Dodge City Dallas is no more in business, and I did not get the emblem from the previous owner... I might check again if he still has it...

Chris of junkerup on youtube , just about sums up second generation charger stuff guess we all know its true , but to hear it from other people who think that same as you & loves chargers as much as we / i do , not good how the muscle car second generation chargers have gone, kind of taken the fun out of the hobby well it kind of has for me anyways :yesnod: i know the hemi E body & aero mopars have always been crazy prices, i can see a time where all these high dollar muscle cars , will be chasing ever fewer & potential buyers will be getting fewer year after year, & think that will filter down to the lesser models or at least the factory original or day two type :scratchchin:
any new guys on here dont know about Chris go check out all his videos , interesting / good stuff to watch about chargers mopars & other muscle car stuff

nice looking 70 charger KD, :2thumbs: :coolgleamA: got a mean looking rake to it :yesnod: ,
yes it does look really low compared to the stock 70 in the back in the day picture,
maybe thats why it looks a lot lower because of the rake & maybe kind of a optical illusion with the 18 inch rims closer to the bottom of the fender arch , compared to the stock 14 inch rims in the other picture
in any case that 70 in the back in the day picture looks really high in the front , were they that high stock as per FSM ? with out looking & cant remember if there is only one measurement i wonder if all ride heights were same no matter what engine option & or rather is you had the HD R/T/Hemi rear springs :scratchchin: .
