Not sure if you guys seen this one yet or not....
I have a pair of photos of a Daytona the same color & also a wreck. I'll scan them at home later & add them to the thread tonight. I took the pics at The Mopar Atlantic Nationals in NJ maybe 5 to 8 years ago, maybe a NJ member knows? The story on the pics I have is that the car was rolled in the 1970's, but I don't know since I never talked to the owner. There wasn't much left on it since it was picked clean, & whatever panel was left was damaged.
Bob
looks like a real old picture to me, hard to tell the color from that picture ,may be F6 . got any more info on it Shakey. i wonder if it was repaired and if it still survives to day.
would be interesting to see that photo ( Old Moparz )
From the primer on the doors it looks like he was on his way to the body shop! :icon_smile_big: Maybe late 70's then? :shruggy:
It looks like an attempt was made to fix the car.

Looks like he didn't get far before he kind of wrecked it. ;D
:bawling: Hopefully, it got fixed ::)
Well, I found them & it looks like the same car to me. The 2 pics I scanned are dated July 2000 on the back, which seems right to me as for when I took them. I don't know how old the original pic is that was posted, but it definitely sat a long time.
I think Dave knows the car, he's from southern NJ. (Was Wingcars69/70 on here.)
it's an easy father , son project. :icon_smile_big:
Almost forgot, I don't have pics of the top, but the roof was buckled pretty badly. Definitly needed an entire car as a patch panel, so that makes it a good candidate for an illegal VIN tag swap, also known as a "rebody". ::)
Judging just from the pics, I could repair that car without a rebody. It doesn't appear to be hurt all that bad, but it could possibly be worse than the pics show. I have the frame machine from hell.
I got a pic of that same car somewhere. If I recall the talk was it was one of Galen Govier`s cars.
I wonder if it got fixed :scope:
looks repairable in the photos to me but as (hotrod98) said "it could possibly be worse than the pics show" i would defiantly buy it and fix it,if the seller was asking a sensable price
makes me sick to my stomach. That would be a project worth taking on!
Yep, that's the same car. A guy named Tom from Long island NY owned it when it was at Nats and Englishtown recently. It was one of 5 Galen was selling probably about 10 years ago. Some of the 5 were David Patik's like the Blue on blue one that made it's way up to Canada, and is now nicely restored
I was going to say I thought it was one of Dave Patiks car that Galen was advertising. I wasn't aware any of t hem were actually Galens. I thought all 5 of them were Dave's.
thats a great project! give me that, at a good price and i'll bring that back. without a rebody too. yummy. :drool5:
That is the F6 car that Tom from long island owns. He is planning a resto for it,and is gathering parts for the resto. He got the car from Galen. This is the car in the flood photo, shown on its roof, from 1973.Tom says he is going to repair the original body, and even though there is serious damage to the A pillars, and the roof, rebodying is not even being considered. I believe that this car will have to go on a jig,or a frame machine to do the repair correctly.
is this the car your talking about
would be nice to see it fixed
Yep;thats the car! If you look at the photo at the begining of this thread, and the photo from Englishtown, you can see the same damage to the drivers side roof, and A pillar. It looks more severe in person! Its the flood car pictured on its roof in the newspaper photo!
intresting stuff. it just goes to show its a small world when aero cars are involved.
Sad, but pretty cool. So the car was having bodywork done and was "wrecked" by the flood then?
What amazes me about this car,is that it still exists at all, most cars no matter what they were, that got wrecked like that early in there lives, would have been written off as a loss by an insurance company, and scrapped! My guess,is that the car probably wasn't insured at the time of the loss, whick must have sucked bigtime for the owner, but is also why it still exists today!
Either that or someone like Dave Patik pulled it out of a junkyard years ago. With the origional intentions of using parts off of it, but for some reason it still remained around.
Just another possible solution.
I question some of those "repaired" cars once they've been hit like that.
Yeah, I know it's theoretically possible to make that car right again. But whenever I see cars like that bring brought back, I wonder what lengths they went to in order to call it "fixed" and "solid" and "safe" underneath that shiny paint. Especially since those kinds of rare big-$$$ cars are trailer queens most of the time.

I mean, imagine you crumple up a soda can:
You can pull the can's dimensions all back straight. You can even bondo & repaint the sides to smooth out all the ripples. It will look perfect. It will be as rust-resistant as any other can.
But what if you tried setting 50 pounds onto the top of your "restored" can? Will it still hold up the weight like a never-crushed soda can will?
No way. The "restored" can would re-fold & collapse at the places of the original creases from getting half as much weight on it as the first time. It's not the same as never being crunched.
ya gotta cut off the real bad places not straighten them. you will need a donor car. Rene
This is a great topic!
I hope no one objects but I'd like to use the story on my website as Mopar of the Month for May 2006!
I have it started:

Dave
Yeah,I know that it will require major surgury to repair the car,but Tom is serious about repairing it correctly! Galen once owned the car,so there is no chance of an inconspicious rebody, nor has it even been considered! Tom has gathered a complete Daytona nose,Including an NOS passengers side fender,as well as a pair of NOS rear quarter panels. I believe that when I spoke to him,a few months ago, that he had everything to repair the car,and was trying to line up someone to do the repair! I can't wait to see that one back on the road!
You should tell him about Alan!
Check out his own project car!

I believe all the daytonas that Galen sold. Were actually Dave Patiks car .As Dave told me for years he had a few daytonas that he saved from back in the day he didnt want crushed. And had in storage. Before Galen started showing up on the mopar radar screens about 80-83.I heard about these car before that timeline .The green one Tom in NY has Was Arthur Morris car from Indiana. It was flipped over in a field and was low mileage car.And dont recall it being the one and the same car that was flipped over by a flood
Art Morris's car? I haven't heard that name for years. I know my dad traded Art a 6 pac Superbird for a daytona back in the early 80's.

Really Dave? I sure made for better reading as the flood car! Did you happen to have any pics of it in the field? Thanks for the update!
Dave
Dave, you may be right about that, the story I got was that it was the flood car,and the damage appeared to be consistant with the photo, but I can't comfirm it. I heard the story while talking to some guys at the Mopar nats, when Tom had the car there. I will ask Tom the next time I hear from him.
Judging from the first pic, it looks like the car centerpunched an immoveable object at a pretty good rate of speed...so I'm going with the "flipped over in a field" idea. :icon_smile_big:
BTW, that's awesome that the "Barrelcuda" (great name ;D) is being restored!
If it was the flood car,the story states that the building that the cars were in was completely washed away, and it would be quite possible that if the water knocked down the building,it also easily could have inflicted all the damage shown on that car!

That's true, I guess if a wall of water pushed the car into a pillar, it would cave in the front like that. I didn't think of it being in a building.
it looks like the flood car to me. Rene
Flipped or flooded, it's f**ked. I wouldn't fix it, but that's just me. :D
I'll agree it's a cool story though, all the power & luck to whoever tackles it.
Just rebody it!,..............fuck the numbers/ originality bullshit!,..........drive it, enjoy it!,..........It's just a MACHINE, ...............It was "original" only once in it's "life".............no restored car is 'ORIGINAL" again as many owners claim, .....yes "restored to original" is open to individual interpretation, ........just as "rebody" is :icon_smile_evil:
Mike G/ DAYCLONA
I could be wrong .But I always asked about .I think was 5 to 7 daytona project cars. Dave Patik had saved for all those years.I think it was a green one he got from that Aurthur Morris .That might be or not be the fllood car..Though the damage matches Toms in NY car.Missing the one upright and front end damage.I just dont recall hearing it was in a fllood .I do recall it was very correct 20.000 mile car
I looked from the old membership records.I Show Dave P with 6 daytona F6 AT .Which shows on the daytona shipment list .As being sold from the state of Indiana.Which I think should be the former Arthur Morris.Dave aquired from him If i remember the story correct .A V2 4 speed a R4 4 speed a B5 blue AT a R4 4 speed. And another F6 At car with white interior
You think that Dave Patik got all of those cars from Art Morris here in Indiana? I"ll have to ask my dad about which car it was that he traded to Art back in the early 80's.
I dont think all maybe 1 or maybe even 2
ah okay.
A roundy round car..................... :'(

I bought my Daytona from Richard Williams in Enid OK in 03, He told me that the flood car was his. MR Williams owned Sooner auto salvage in Enid for 30+ years, he also told me that he bought the car back from the insurance co and in his words JUST SCRAPED IT OUT, putting the 440 in a wrecker. He also told me that he still had the title for that daytona. Also he told me that the flood daytona was hemi orange and when he bought the one that i have now witch was R4 originally and was black when he bought it, he painted it just like the one that was wrecked. I have all the paper work that MR Williams had for my daytona and he bought in late 73, i also tracked down the original owner of my daytona and spoke with the man. He sold it to MR williams in late 73. I can call MR williams to get more info on this if i want to, i do not think that green daytona was his. :icon_smile_cool: JR jAMES.
Wingman, any details of the flood car would be great to have - including the VIN # if it's available. Cool story!
BBD, the picture you posted is of Buddy Arrington's car. That accident led to NASCAR's requirement for a cable running through the wing uprights and through the horizontal stabilizer to keep it from flying into the stands (you'll notice the airfoil is missing in the picture). Doug Schellinger probably remembers which race it was that this happened at, but I've forgotten. For whatever reason, I thought it was at Michigan. CRS strikes again :rotz:
There were eight Daytonas sold new in OK, mine and one was a hemi can be discounted. The V.I.N.s are all listed in the wing warriors list and i have seen them hear some ware. Six left so what is the V.I.N. of the green car? I will try to call MR Williams to find out but it may take some time as he is retired and lives out of Enid now. :icon_smile_cool: JR.
I actually had nine cars listed as being delivered to OK, but none of them were Hemicars. My spreadsheet isn't infallible though. Which one of these is a Hemicar? I might need to make a few more corrections yet.
Here are the VIN's I have listed as shipped to Oklahoma:
XX29 L 9B 405176
XX29 L 9B 409032
XX29 L 9B 409031
XX29 L 9B 390017
XX29 L 9B 409034
XX29 L 9B 410764
XX29 L 9B 400590
XX29 L 9B 355119
XX29 L 9B 355121
I'm also exploring a theory that the cars listed as being shipped directly to one of the Sales Shows were later sent to the original ordering dealer. In some instances, the Sales Show was in a different state than the ordering dealer. There's a good example of this with Oklahoma and Missouri. One of the cars sent to the Sales Show in Kansas City appears to have been ordered by a dealership in OK. That would add one more to the state total for OK, and reduce Missouri's total. I haven't had time to really dig into this, but it is something I've observed and I think a connection exists.
Geno
Its a small world isn't it. We bring up one car, and in a few post someone knows the owner of the car. The internet is truly an amazing thing.
That and this forum, can't thank Troy enough for the wing car section.

I initially thought the same thing too when I saw the picture, but I didn't remember the crash that broke the wing off happening at Daytona.
Glad there are resources out there to look such things up quickly. I scanned Buddy's 69 and 70 Grand National results, and found that he only crashed out in one race in 1969, and he wasn't driving a Daytona in that race nor was he in the #5 car. In 1970 he only crashed out in one race also, the 1970 Daytona 500 when he went out on lap 77 - started 32nd and still finished 29th.
So, it looks like it was at Daytona after all, and you're right on the money about Lake Lloyd...
Geno
So if it's the Daytona 500, there must be video footage of that accident somewhere in the France family vault?

I think the France family vault is a deposits-only type vault... :rotz:
A guy that lives in my hometown is real good friends with Cotton Owens, who still has a lot of old race footage. I could ask him, but the chances of that accident being caught on tape might be fairly slim.
:Twocents:
Didn't one of the big networks used to always tape the 500 back then too?

This has to be the 'before' pic I posted earlier?
BBD
Yep, that's the one.
I have that same #5 Daytona picture in an 8x10 that I purchased from the NASCAR archives a few years back. Interesting writeup on Buddy from that site. There's a guy I talked with a while back that works for Arrington Engines. He said Buddy's health isn't so great and that he doesn't travel much these days. Before hearing that, we were thinking of asking him to come out for the MonsterMoparWeekend show. He's supposedly a really nice guy too.
Thanks for posting that link, BBD!
Gene I would say go ahead and invite him to the Monster Mopar. If he doesn't get out much, maybe the only reason is he isn't asked to. You never know until you ask. :)

400590 is my green one.
I can add that JohnTprs daytona was a few miles from me.It used to be Rons car in NJ .Ron got it from Kenneth in MN
