Title: 1969 daytona Q5 UPDATE#3 pics mexico /trunk/wing/engine/under body coat
Post by: 69daytonaQ5 on March 29, 2008, 11:50:19 PM
with help from Doug Schellinger of DATONA-SUPERBIRD AUTO CLUB...I've found out its a real Q5 turquoise car with the C6T tan interior and original #9th member of his club...and my dad purchased it in 1980..i had no idea it was a rare color..all this time i thought it was originally orange..until i was at the store and picked up a car collectors magazine where there was a Q5 daytona for about 400,000 ...i was so juiced i decided to contact doug..my dad was a mopar fanatic ..he was murdered  in 91, we were forced to sell almost all his cars but kept some..we had dusters, roadrunners ,challengers, cudas, chargers and my daytona we only kept a few...and moved out of east palo alto ,ca in 1992..i was 6 when he passed and will always remember him...ill never forget during the 89 earthquake i was in his challenger when i rolled off and hit the neighbors mail box...anyways it was defiantly hard to loose my father but he must have had a plan because he always kept his daytona in great condition..I'm glad I've  garaged it just like he did all his life...its been in there since it was bought...I've never touched it I'd rather mess with my ford 5.0's than touch that,i guess because I'm scared that I'll mess it up...but thanks to Doug ,he helped me trace it back to as far as 1975..thanks Doug

Wow, that's a hell of a story.  I'm sorry about what happened to your father but if this car helps you keep some kind of connection to him then it's a good thing.  I'm guessing the advice to never sell it would be wasted. ;)

Oh, and welcome to the group and more pics! :icon_smile_big:

so when i contacted Doug..he asked me to provide the fender tag and vin..thats when we knew it was a real daytona ...he asked only about 2 or 3 questions before he said "that daytona doesn't have DAYTONA in big letters across the front does it?" i replied oh my god..yes it DOES..i live in California and this guy I've never met just described my car and he's in Wisconsin..i was in shock..and disbelief...but then i realized i had been a needle in a haystack find for him as well as him to me...we quickly started to talk about my car he said he remembered the car from when his dad ran the car club..he told me that it was a previous members former car who was selling at the time...we excahaged email addresses and he told me he had paper work of my car and a picture as well as an add...i went home and everything he said matched up..the guy who was #9 member selling the car was the guy on my dads original bill of sale which i still have ...i gave Doug a call and told him...he said he would send me all the info he had on my car and all he wanted in return was a picture of the car now...so i sent hI'm all these..im glad i met Doug oh he asked me what i drove and i said a 5.0 , he said he also had a 85 5.0 which was a good thing i guess...

Thats cool you still have the car indoors for sure. Sorry about your dad. Doug and a few others are very well educated about wing cars. Your sitting on a gold mine.
Awesome Daytona!!  :2thumbs:

Thanks for the photos and welcome to the board.  :2thumbs:

Welcome to the forum!  Great car... I predict Troy H, Danny L, and many others will be sending you PMs about trading for the Daytona.   With the car's history in your family though, sounds like a keeper!

Glad you made it over to the site!  Now I have some pics to put with your registration!

PS---nice Foxbody.  I have the same '03 Cobra replicas on my 92 GT convertible....
you can make the front center caps fit with a little creativity from a hammer on the dust covers! ;)

you can make them fit a lot easier with a 5 lug conversion!  94-5 cars are popping up in junkyards pretty regularly these days.  I ran '98 cobra wheels on my '93 when i did the swap.

Q5 is the plan for paint..ill probably have my mechanic that i trust just put new gaskets ,and if i do anything else it will be the valves on the heads with new seals and get it running it hasn't ran for about 20+ years and then put it on the market not in a hurry to sell so ill hang on to it till i get what i want.especially after seeing what the Q5 with black int that was going for 375k..mine only has 53xxx on it ..when i do fix it to drive it wont be driven much anyways.unless to a car show that you guys host aslong as there is a northern california show sometime..ill probably put some lowjack on it and park it in its spotin the garage...i got time to get the right offer im only 22..when i tell someone i have this car they always laugh and tell me im bullshitting..so ill wait...oh I've had offers by some guy who wanted to trade a cuda fully restored and $80,000 i was quick to turn that down he said he used to have one and sold it..works at chevrolet of livermore he told me he specializes in cuda and challenger bodys..i guess a co-worker of his lives by me with a 69 roadrunner and told him about it..cool guy..he's came twice already...its gonna take about 375 to get over my sentimental value..i guess you can say there is really no price I'd go for yet ...

P.S.    for the mustang owners i have the 03's in five lug now 18x9 18x10.5 and 5 lug i have the sn-95 cobra front and disc in the back but not installed yet..thanks for the info..i sure will post a fender tag. .i be sending one 2 doug soon...thanks again doug

Definately a car to hold on to.

I'm another one of the "dad had a Daytona" people on this board. My dad had 5 Daytona's, 2 Superbirds, and 2 Charger 500's. I thought everyone had a bunch of these cars when I was little. He didn't have a Q5 Daytona, but did have a Q5 charger 500. Definately a beautiful color on a car, and with the tan interior would be quite striking if you ask me.

Before Troy (hemicharger68) asks, he will want to trade for the car with his HEMI 68 Charger. I can't offer anything close to that, just a charger 500. Already know the answer is a "NO", but its tradition that we both ask. So to get it out of the way.

Wow - a crazy story but good to see that the car is no worse for wear after all these years... I wouldn't sell the car now either, since the market's soft and you're going to be hard-pressed to get more than $150k as it sits (anybody else is going to restore it to its original condition, and that's still big bucks)... the Q5 daytona that's been listed for $315k has probably had a $150-200k restoration, FYI...

At any rate, it's still a hell of a car and anyone on this board would love to have it in their garage (including myself!) - take care of it and keep us updated!

XX29 - Charger 500/Daytona
L - HP440 engine
9 - 1969 Model Year
B - Hamtramck Assembly Plant
410777 - VIN Sequence Number
Q5 - Roof paint color
Q5 - Body paint color
C - Charger trim grade
6 - Vinyl bucket seats
T - Tan vinyl color
T3 - Upper Door Frame paint color
606 - Scheduled Production Date of Friday, June 6, 1969
926866 - Special Order Number
A01 - Light Group

A11 - Charger500 or Daytona Sales Code
A36 - Performance Axle Package (3.55:1 8-3/4")

N85 - Tachometer
R11 - 2watt MusicMaster AM radio
V88 - Transverse Stripe Delete

EN2 - End of tag codes Line 2

I might need to check a couple of those codes, as I rattled those off from memory.  Might have M21 and M31 reversed, and I don't see A04 much so I was a little fuzzy on that one.

Hey I know its off topic, but speaking of cakes. Why don't ya bake a cake in the shape of a Daytona or a superbird for the Monster Mopar? My 5th birthday cake was a Petty blue Superbird, Loved it.

Hmmmmm, so with the A01 package, anything written on top of the drivers side tail light housing? I know I know, so far its only been on the 500's but still worth asking right?

Still a really nice looking car. Noticed that there is quite a bit that has been changed under the hood from stock, but 1 thing that is right. NO FRONT HOOD bumpers. Just like it should be.

OH I'm sure Gene already asked about the extra hole in the trough behind the battery tray, but how many holes are there on yours?

Aftermarket valve covers and coil.   What are the large lines running across the battery tray area and through the radiator support?    The experts may spot some other things.  I don't see anything that you can't remedy.

where are those holes and what did you noticed has been changed? carb or valvecovers?

You sure you don't want a Hemi Charger for that?......................................  For all the doubters..   :icon_smile_big:

...

Before Troy (hemicharger68) asks, he will want to trade for the car with his HEMI 68 Charger. I can't offer anything close to that, just a charger 500. Already know the answer is a "NO", but its tradition that we both ask. So to get it out of the way.

Who? Me?  Na...... He wouldn't want an original 4-speed Charger 500 and a soon-to-be-freshly-painted turquoise '68 Hemi Charger R/T...

Troy

Of course, I DO want Dana, Troy.  ;)

Welcome to the forum, 69DaytonaQ5.  Unfortunately, it seems there are too many of us here that lost our fathers too soon.  Hopefully the cars make us all feel at least a little better without them here.

The car definately didn't come factory with the A/C but it looks in the interior photo' that someone installed an under dash system at some time. The things under the hood that aren't correct are mainly just minor cosmetic things. Nothing that can't easily be changed back.

The holes I was talking about are in the trough area on the inner fender well, behind where the battery sits. The electrical wiring should be running through this trough, and there should only be 1 hole in the trough, but on Daytona's for some reason there seems to be a 2nd hole. I couldn't find the photo in the  thread on Gene's Daytona for refernce, but I think it was on page 7. Somebody help.

Found the keys...opened the trunk looks like a thin film or tape in the color white around the inside of the rear lower side red marker where stripe would go

Care to take some photo's of the inside of the trunk area? Love shots of the trunk mat, jack hold down plates, wing braces, and the such.

Great story, less the part about your dad, sorry.

Love to see some pics inside the trunk without the trunk mat and inside of the quarter panels.

The VIN will be stamped on the engine block on the passenger side just above the oil pan.    The last six numbers should match the dashboard.

Well, it took a while, but I finally found the photo of Tony's car from 1975.  This is when Rich Meintel owned it in California.  Rich was a very early DSAC and WW member.    This is the original Q5 car with the tan interior.

Hello again....
Hope you're starting to enjoy the Daytona some... Hopefully you're not near Mexico City where the traffic is horrible. If you cruise up to Houston some time, give me a shout. Oh yeah, since the last time I replied to this thread, I've gotten my own Daytona..  :icon_smile_big:

Now I too have a Daytona like my Dad, but unlike you, not the one he owned... But, that's ok..........

Cheers,
Troy

You have gotten yourself into the best possible position of empowering yourself with the resources needed to restore the car. There are levels of restoration calibrated by finances,,,,, and of course, knowledge. Remember, one man's restored car is another man's basket-case. You could do a down-and-dirty freshening up and get her on the road. Or, you could go full out. The best bang for the buck is to restore the car as close as possible cosmetically. Believe me, regardless, you'll get the attention !!!!!  Mine is about as OEM as you can get with the exceptions of magnum 500's and Goodyear Eagle GT2's...  No matter where I go, I get the looks and attention. So, don't drive it unless you shy away from that..   :icon_smile_big:
