Title: Zinc additive
Post by: 7chargers on May 26, 2011, 01:13:52 PM
I'm changing the rear main so there for I have to drain the oil and I'm going to start using Lucus 30w40 performance conventional oil. Would it be a good idea to use a bottle of zinc additive in the oil. It's a 383, mild cam... I see where some say use it and some say no.. whats your take? Thanks

I would and do.

I use Valvoline VR1 20W-50 Conventional Oil
http://www.valvoline.com/products/consumer-products/motor-oil/racing-motor-oil/6/

and a bottle of ZDDPlus
http://www.davidnavone.com/zddplus.htm

and a NAPA Gold 1515 Oil filter

I read in an article by R. Ehrenberg that too much zinc should be avoided, the 0.14 zinc in one liter of VR1 20W 50 should apparently be enough. By the way Valvoline VR1 20W 50 is a great product.

I finally dug it out:

"The active (meaning it is consumed) anti-wear ingredient in the ZDDP is phosphorous.(...) This zinc-phosphate forms a protective film. (...) This film rebuilds itself even when damaged.

(...) In fact there is data that suggests that excessive ZDDP can cause additional wear and pitting. (...) Be ZDDP smart: For street use limit the addition to a phosphorous level of about 1200-1300 ppm. Race only you might want 1800."

quoted from R. Ehrenberg in Mopar Action october 2010

If you consider Valvoline VR1 20W-50 you get 1400/1300 zinc/phosphorous.

Greets

Good job Al

looks I can just run VR1 and stop adding the additioanl bottle of ZDDP
That will save a few bucks.

Since my rebuilt I have about 10,000 miles and only use VR1.  So far so good.

cmengines.com recomends at least 14% zinc for flat tappet cams.

Looks as though AMSOIL sells a new oil for flat tappet cams and muscle cars with high ZDDP in it, they market it with high zinc content.. sounds like a good oil and maybe a good fit for us MOPAR people!
