Title: Dumb oil filter question.
Post by: Wakko on July 21, 2005, 03:13:49 PM
Ok, I feel like a total retard, but what oil filter is right for the 440?  Auto store's computer listed the P30001 for Purolator, and it appears the correct size, but I know the 30001 is usually a Ford filter.  Since Ford and Mopar use the same bolt pattern I didn't think it was a stretch that the filters would be the same too.

That's the right filter.
A long time ago Chrysler and Ford used the same filter.
Ford's FL1a fits your car

ya thats the correct part number. I would use K&N part #HP3001 or #HP2004

What's the advantage of that?  I know some of them flow better, but if it's at the cost of protection, I wouldn't think it's worth it.

What about Fleetguard LF689?
We are dealing with them here and from experience they are among the best on heavy duty market. They also have syntetic media in certain production line-up.

One thing I like about the K&N is the "nut" on the end of them so you can get them off with a wrench.  I hate having to drive a screwdriver through those things to turn them off.

i usually tighten them by hand. youre not supposed to tighten them with anything other than hand.

Yes, I'm aware of that.  Mine just seem to be too tight 365 days later when I go to take them off.

A cheapy strap or "boa" wrench from Crappy Tire does the trick nicely. (You're in Ontario, right?)
They have bins of them on sale right now, too.

3 months or 3k miles!  The oil turns acidic.

I don't drive the car year round.  It gets used about 1500 miles and six months max.  One oil filter a year and two (sometimes three) oil changes.

When you drive the car, it gets carbon in the oil and it turns acidic.  Doesn't matter if you don't drive it often or not.  It might not be dirty, but it's certainly not good.  For the extra 12 bucks, I'd do the oil changes, but that's just me talkin.

I do the oil changes.  It's the filter that I only change once a year.

Changing filter every oil change, theres no use to run oil through dirty oil filter

Besides you are still holding half a quart or more of the old oil in the filter!!

I like filters with check valves in them. Not that engines don't bleed off pressure anyway, it's just a simple thing that is great in theory. I know they are great on last bit of life engines...

Except that when I'm changing oil every 500 miles, it ain't all that dirty.
