Thanks for posting that. Some really nice pics there. I really like the idea of a charger convertible, and I already have the perfect candidate for the conversion - a 68 Charger 318 car that I've had wasting away in the barn for years...now if I could just find a SOLID 68 Coronet convertible to build on...I'd be in business... ::)

There seems to be a groundswell of enthusiasts who are building convertibles out of cars that never were. Obviously there was a 1970 Roadrunner convertible, which makes building a Superbird convertible a relatively simple procedure.
A Charger Daytona convertible is a might bit harder...
To those who have successfully achieved this task, my hat is off to you!
At this time, I'm going to post all the pictures that I have of these cars (over 110 shots), and encourage each of you to go through your picture collections and do likewise!
Or, send them to me...I'd appreciate the effort, and guarenteed, I will share them with the world!

I do beleive i know the convertible superbird in your picture. looks like a fella I know in kansas. if that car has a 528 hemi in it then its the one I know of.
The work that it takes to build a Charger convertible,is a lot more involved, than what is required to build the Superbird convertible. Although I didn't build mine as a wingcar,it still required quite a bit to metal fabrication,to fit the rear clip! The car is a blast to drive, and gets a lot of attention. It was worth all the labor!
Chargervert,
Your are the guy that built the Orange 70 RT convert, Right? I Remembered reading that article in Mopar Action a few years back and always thought that was a cool car, and I want to say you did some awesome work. I always like when people build "what might have been cars". Like the guy that build a 71 Daytona. Do you have a web site with photos or anything I would like to see some in progress pics. This might sound silly, A custom project that comes to my mind I would like to do in the future (although not as complicated or expensive) And would fit my budget... I think when I finish the RT I want an A body project, I like Dusters and 68 Darts... so I thought about building a 68 Demon... You know take a demon/dart sport shell, Put a 68 dart nose, round sidemarkers, and maybe grafting in 68 charger taillamps,to go with the 68 "round" theme. and Putting in a vent wing window in the demon doors. Use 68 Dart cluster and interior patterns. It may sound silly but I thought it would look pretty cool.
Jason
Nice green superbird convert.I helped a friend with a parted out superbird. And a original 70 FM3 satellite conv >Back in the early 90-s .Put together a superbird ragtop with all real parts down to the rallye dash
.
hi
i like the superbird convertable, very cool. the charger convertable looks like alot of work. thanks for sharing the pics.
Hey Dave isnt that the car that almost burned in a garage fire! If I remember correctly that car was damaged slightly,by the fire.
Hey JAAK, I did build the orange 70 Charger convertible, and my car was the inspiration for the 71 wingcars that my friend Gary built! The 71 wingcar info, was given to me by a friend of mine(Mike G @ Dayclona)and was obtained from Doug @ DSAC. When Mike gave me the info from Doug,I showed it to Gary, and Pam,who are very good friends of mine, and only restore 71 B bodies. Gary and Pam helped me complete the Charger convert, and liked the attention that a one off Mopar recieved! So as soon as I saw those photographs that Mike gave me,I showed them to Gary, and told him that,These cars are what you have to build, and after we put a nose and wing on a model of a 71 Charger, and we loved the look,I told Gary that I would ask Mike to fab up the aero specific parts to build the 71 aero cars! I introduced Gary and Pam to Mike, and the rest is history!
I will be building a daytona conv soon. and it will be very different than anyone else's as i am starting with a 67 Satellite conv and graft a charger sheet metal off some of my parts cars on to it. The reason I am going with earlier car is the rear window area is straight across [heres some pics] and would look better with the charger trunk lid lines unlike the curved 68 to 70 B Body convs. this project is a ways away as I have to finish my sunroof Superbird and My Superbird Conv first.
Yes thats friend mikes pink superbird we built. We had met and talked with Pete V .Who brought out his daytona convertible to many shows. And Mike wanted to do the suprerbird convertible
Hey Sunroof Superbird, that would be a different approach, but I think it would be a lot more work than I would want to do! The 68 to 70 b body has the same curvature on the top of the rear quarterpanels as the Charger, and the 66 - 67 b body is too straight across the top of the quarters. Also the top frame is taller, and would look too tall, and square to flow with the Chargers curving bodylines. I used the 68 Satelites body line on top of the rear quarter to simulate where the fin would be,and faded it at the spot where the fin would have ended on the hardtop,I thought it made it look like a Charger! That Satelite convertible that you have would make a great replica of the 67 GTX that David Spade drove in the movie Tommy Boy! I would look for a 68 - 70 convertible to do the other project, thats my input, having already done one.
Here is my friends 70 FM 3 satelite superbird convertible with all real factory parts .As chargervert mentioned ist was in a garage fire seen in the background .Only needs paint and top
(http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e67/75414/pantherpink.jpg)
un likely i know but any of them a real wing car
There is a real white superbird formerly owned by Pete V .That had a sunrooof. But alot of what your seeing are replicas.I was thinking why doesnt someone do a charger station wagon 70 charger nose on a b body wagon Ive seen 70 RR and GTXs done before .Or a 70 4 door satelitte and splice 2 together. For a superbird limo
yeah ( nascarxx29) i remember reading about that white superbird with a sunroof , didn't the owner use a roof of a charger or something .
Yes there was
(http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e67/75414/44d99bd8.jpg)
yeah thats the one, ( Nascarxx29) also didn't some one take the vinyl off a original superbird and painted it Petty blue all over. or was it a clone, can't remember . it looked real nice though with no vinyl top .

By chance, do you know the story on this Charger? I stumbled on some pics of it myself a couple months ago, but don't know the story. Judging from the bent hood, it's the same car.
The 3rd pic is the only one I've got that I don't see in your collection. ;)

Hey Dave, your buddy was very lucky that his Superbird convertible survived that fire! That sunroof that was in Petes Superbird, came from a friend of mine, his 70 Charger R/T SE was totaled in an accident.
Its nice to see a few more convertible Chargers out there,I really enjoy mine! I just hope that 69 wasn't an original R/T.
You can see the article on Pete's car here... http://host219.ipowerweb.com/~1970char/pictures/Charger_Vert.html
The Charger below is from e-town. I think it belongs to Howie, and he said it's some sort of factory proto-type. I have my serious doubts though. I'm sure a few of you know the car. That top is :o
Chris,I saw that car at E town, that car was butchered,it was a shame, and certainly not anything done by the factory!
Heres some pics of my superbird sunroof project. I put a charger sunroof in it also. I about have it ready for paint now and can start putting it back together.
Here is what I will be making my superbird conv out of. its a 69 Coronet 500 conv. Very rusty I think I may just graft all the conv parts over onto my Rust free 70 Road Runner instead of reskining the coronet.
Hey Sunroof,I would make the Charger convertible from the Coronet, and get a 70 Satelite convert to build the Superbird vert with. It will save you the greif of swaping a whole rear clip for nothing. When you do the Charger, you have to Change the whole rear clip anyway,so the Coronet would do for that project! If you start with a 70 for the bird it will save you a lot of work! Just trying to save you some greif! The sunroof bird looks really cool!
I think you should make a convertible out of that BUS!! :icon_smile_big:
Hi Have decided now that I will be cutting My rust free Road Runner top off and setting the Conv stuff down in it out of the Coronet Conv That way it will save alot of body work and I can be driving sooner. I want have to replace all the floors and frame rails that way. I worked on it some this weekend and got it running so i can drive it some this summer While I work on it. I put the wing Off my sunroof car on it for now till I am ready for it on my other car. Makes it much cooler to drive this way. Heres a few more pics.
.
I have a pic to contribute to this one....................
My favorite from a few years ago on another board was Swamp Wing. A great looking Plum Crazy Superbird Vert "Tribute".
.
yeah -- that looks like Swamp Wing. I wonder if he still has it?
Same car I assume... this was taken last year, in Florida....

One has black interior and the other white. Now that I think about it -- I think Swampwing had white, but many brain cells have died and regenerated since I hung out on the board he hung out on.
At least you HAD brain cells! Here's another Superbird Convertible...Courtesy of Barry Washington at www.hamtramck-historical.com.

Sunroof bird, why cut up a solid Road Runner,I would just sell the Runner, and buy a 70 Satelite convertible. There not to hard to come by,and what a rust free Road Runner, would bring you, would cover the cost. Your making a lot of work for yourself,to fabricate a car, thats already done for you by the factory!

This is a friends car a orig FM3 70 satelitte conv. I helped out on the build in the 90-s .It has all real genuine parts from a parted out superbird I located for him.It has in it the rallye dash 440-6 pack and dana 60 both jacks etc.The purple Fl superbird conv shown .Is SWAMPWINGS car I believe

Hey Chargervert, do you live in Rhode Island? You wouldn't happen to have a red 68 charger, do you?
i saw that really nice orange car on ebay 4 months age for like 150k
Then it was back up for like 125k buy it now. Did it ever sell ?????
That car is really clean and nice but no hemi and satelite dash still in it not a 100k car by far.

Pete got swept up in the whole Dayclona brough-ha-ha a while back and was given a vacation from the site. I did and still do respect Pete's opinion/craftsmanship, and I think he'd be welcome if he wanted to come back around (although that's still up to Troy).
Chances are, it'd be easier to find him on Moparts under the same screenname at the moment.

I don't think it sold at that price. There was a thread on here about the car when the auction was rolling, and the consensus opinion was the same as yours. Nice, but not $150/125k nice.

I remember the first picture of where the convert 69 is painted all crazy it belonged to some guy named Spencer. I think he got it off of a girl he went to high school with and did the conversion just to do it. He also did a 70 Charger convert that was smashed all the way down the passenger side. I don't think he's into Chargers anymore.

Now I know why I was told I needed to check this board out.
Yes I still have the Purple convertable in some of the earlier shots. Some of those photos go back several years. It did have a black interior for several years but I redid it in white. The car also has a pretty strong 440 now as well. The matching number 318 / 904 are on the floor of my garage. It is over due for a paint job now but I enjoy taking it out and not worrying about rock chips or other nasty stuff.
I don't visit the Mopar forums often as my new hobby is Road Racing with the SCCA. I have had the Swamper for around 13 years and it is not going anywhere soon.
Thanks for the compliments.

Hey, did you notice the cruise-control stalk on the column? It actually worked with the six-pack, but I removed it and the A/C when I put the Hemi in it. I also changed the gears from 3.54 to 3.73.
I am sorry to say the Daytona 'Vert has been off the road for 5 years. I have my Hemi 'Bird and 440 F6 Daytona to drive. The cam went bad in the 'Vert and my Mom was very ill, so I parked the car so I could take care of her until she passed away. I will unearth the car and put it back on the road next summer. Wingnut

ok i'll try her back again next week :icon_smile_big: help me wear her down :2thumbs: I have about 20 great stories of driving my car , most of the early ones end badly . I will see if i can dig them up and email the links too you .
Figured I would check in and post a couple updated photos of the Swamper doing pace car duty a few races ago. The wing made a great place for the strobe lights. :)
Swampy, that center picture would be a great one to enlarge and crop, so we could see the 'Bird up close from that angle!
I wanted to be in a "hot" area on pit road to get the photos so I let our regular pace car driver drive it. It made two parade laps and then there was a crash on the start which required a regrouping and about 3 more pace laps. I have several pictures.

No purple Superbirds....no convertible Superbirds....no purple convertible Superbirds were ever built by Plymouth.
And I have to wonder why? They just look so darned good!!!
Its a known fact that they had a tough time selling the Super Birds to begin with and I don't know what the production figures were but there weren't many convertibles built compared to the rest of the yearly production so I'd guess there would be a microspect customer base so if you built it they wouldn't come. :shruggy:
superbird convertible pace car
http://automotivetribune.com/?p=3172
My buddy dan got his Green convertible in a calender this year
Got both sides stripped to bare metal. I am going to try and tighten up the door gaps and make a couple other improvements while it is apart. No real surprises under the paint after 17 years. I also need to figure out a better headlight system. Either convert it to electric or possibly just use fixed lights with removable covers. This is a custom build here so originality is secondary to everything else. Pretty amazing how many aftermarket body panels are available now. About the only thing available back then was floors and crappy quality qtr panels.

All the metal work is done including replacing a couple wavy pieces that were unavailable years ago. Door gaps, trunk gaps and hood to nose transitions were all reworked. Headlights were reworked but still need to wire them up. Started adding some filler over the welded seams (it will need a lot less filler this time). Starting to think it might get painted within a few months or sooner if I keep up my recent activity level.

I do have a model of my car, and it does not have a top boot, but then again, the real one doesn't either. :)
I got the major bondo work done. The sides are epoxy primed and top coated with sandable primer. Next step will be skim coating the whole car to take care of all the dings and minor stuff.
A buddy of mine asked me to bring it to a show tomorrow (At the Festival Flea market near Sample Road and the turnpike in Broward County) with over 500 cars pre-registered as of today. Since I have not driven it more than a few blocks around my neighborhood for almost a year, I decided to bolt the wing back on, a side mirror and a couple other things and bring it. Stop by and say hi if you happen to be in the area. I will take a few photos of it at the show tomorrow.

630 cars showed up before they started turning them away. Only about 20-30% were late models so there were not too many guys cleaning lint off 6 month old seat covers.
My car didn't want to cooperate this morning, as I had to replace the alternator and the voltage regulator this morning before it finally ran well.
There were a lot more old Mopars than I expected and some very nice ones to boot.
I gutted the interior yesterday as I am going to go ahead and paint the trunk inside and dress that up as well. May as well take it to the next level since I am going this far.

my buddy tim build a convertible bird before and had to sell it , he sold it to dan in wisconsin
he is now building this car into a birdible also , this is tims former bird , he has moved to lawrence ks now which is right down the road from me and is now building the car above
it will be purple and he has a brand new magnum 6 speed manual tranny to go in it behind a big block
Will Tim start a build thread? I hope so. :popcrn:
...My parts scavenger hunt continues...
he is on face book , but i havent convinced him tp come over here , if he doesnt i'll keep u guys updated
my great friend and buddy mike meads has just sold tim a set of 70 coronet fenders and a fresh air coronet hood
so i guess tims car will have the dual scooped hood
:'( :'( that ragtop is too nice ta mod except color maybeeeeee??? :brickwall: :'( :'( :Twocents:
That ragtop would sure make an awesome daily driver/parts runner as is. If it is not a bondo bucket, just drive it as is ;)
This needed a bump. After a few delays of life getting in the way, the Swamper is purple once again. Took it to our local cruise even though it is still missing a lot of chrome. Hoping to drive it a bit more this winter now that the weather is finally cooling down.

Well im going to tell you Air Grabber :drool5: but I like both . Super Bee hood would be easier but may be harder to find . They make an Air Grabber kit you can graft in .
:popcrn: circa 2003 california , has since went to wisconsin restored in limelite and sold at Barrett Jackson and several more times since

I made some changes to the vertibird lately. Added new Espo 6-7 leaf rear springs, QA1 upper control arms, urethane bushings and welded the lower control arms. I have a set of USCT frame connectors to add next as well.
I was going to go with Firm Feel for the steering gear, as they seem to be the popular choice, but they don't answer their phone and sent me a email after way too long, that they are 10 weeks out for delivery. I went with Steer and Gear, out of Ohio, instead. They answered their phone, said they did a couple extra things that Firm Feel didn't do, were notably less expensive, mentioned a 2 week time estimate (because they were busy getting ready for a big show), and took a few minutes to explain their process. They shipped a gear 2 weeks to the day from processing the order, return shipping label for the core included. Very happy with Steer and Gear, and Espo for that matter. I got the QA1 control arms from Summit.
Took the car out tonight for the first time, and even though I need to raise the front up a bit more, and it needs an alignment, the difference is amazing. No more steering play and the feel is like a new car. I have had this car for 26 years now, so the steering was getting pretty bad and the springs were not HD to start with.
Another one. Yellow. Forsake pretty cheap

That is Gary Lazaar's (RIP) Hemi covertible. He started with a 70 panther pink Sport satellite 'vert to make his creation. His car inspired me to make my Daytona 'vert. WINGNUT
I remember he also ran a ad in hemmings. I called him in mid 80s $25 K for it.The older magazine article mentioned belvedere conv and using a wrecked hemi superbird. I found a hemi superbird under his name on 79 wingcar members RM23ROA170237

Swamp Thing got a coyote
Putting the Coyote in it has made it so much more fun. We got 27.5 mpg on the 500 mile round trip to the Garlits show. It does not overheat in traffic anymore, even with the AC on. 420 HP is plenty and these engines can be built with way more with just add ons, before anything in the bottom end needs to be touched. This was my first swap and it was done in a few months, all at home, with the biggest challenge being the exhaust. Electronics was actually pretty easy, even with the 6 speed automatic in it. After doing all the research on the issues a lot of people seem to have putting modern Hemi's into old bodies have, even with kits, I wanted to do something different. This is the 3rd Powertrain this car has had in the 27 years I owned it, and even my kids like it better since it does not smell like gas all the time with the cats on it.
Not to mention the obvious bonus of driving the purists nuts. Most people who seem offended by it, miss the whole Roadrunner/Coyote reference, at which point they think its brilliant.

I thought "Swamp Thing" was a cloned Superbird. The CoPart shot looks like a cloned Daytona.
