Title: 1968 Charger 500 Prototype Pics And Article
Post by: LeeBoy on October 11, 2005, 11:07:29 AM
I found this in an 80's MOPAR mag. Does anybody know if its real or even seen the car before? The article doesn't give much info. Look at the 80's customizing they did to it!  :puke:

I have a magazine from 1968, (motor trend I think??) that has an article on that same car when it was new. You can tell by the side marker lights it isn't a '69. It had different, I think snowflake wheelcovers back then. I posted a scan of the entire article on the old messageboard, so someone might have saved it.

The car is real & it looks the same today as it did back then. I have seen it at a few different  winged warrior meets.

i was reading super rod last year issue i think it features a green 68 charger r/t done out with performance stuff like a car 2day would have and it said that some late production 68 hemi charger r/t's had the charger 500 grille but said charger r/t on grille and it did not have the flush window only grille anyone have a picture of one of those cars-MATT

p.s. on the cover it showed a customized 67 nova that was silver and blueish i think.

Last I heard it's still owned by Harold Sullivan.    I know I've seen pics from a car show or 2 somewhere but the only real thing I have is a copy of a page from the EOD show awhile back.

The 68 HEMI 500 prototype is definately a real car, however it isn't owned by Harold Sullivan as far as I know. It has been owned by the same individual since the mid 70's as far as I'm aware.
The HEMI 500 that the article is talking about Harold owning is the car that is now in Canada and is the first 69 HEMI 500. It was the press release car, has cloth insert seats, and power windows, and a six way driver seat.
Here is a pic of the 68 car from back around 1982. And the second picture is a shot of the car Harold owned, which is now in Canada.

The car that Harold had was the press release car for the east coast. The 68 car however in both pictures is the same car. It was just painted two different colors over the years. I believe that the darker maroon is the origional color of the car, but i'm not certain of that.

I have always loved the flush front end of the 500's. Then again they don't do as much for me as the nose cones on Daytona's, but then again I can't afford a Daytona either. I would gladly trade the 500 in heart beat though for a winged car, Daytona that is not a Superbird. They just don't do it for me either.

I like the hubcaps on the car in the magazine article as well.

I always wondered what a 69 500 would look like with the lights blacked out!
