Title: just bought a historic hauler
Post by: 41husk on March 05, 2010, 07:35:35 PM
much thanks to Aero426, I just bought a Dodge D-700 car hauler.  This rig was given to Cotton Owens by Chrysler as a cab with frame rails and he built the car hauler.  He later sold the truck to Neal Castle, and I just bought it from Neal.  I just wonder what cars have been loaded on that rig?  Did any Nascar winners sit on that truck?  I plan to drive it from North Carolina To St. Louis.  Mr. castle said he would drive the truck anywere.  After getting it home I will detail it, load one of the cars and store it in the out building at the Mopad.  I will load the Daytona clone and go to shows, displaying both vehicles with pride.  A real Daytona hauler, with a real nice daytona clone on it.  My wife went to visit her sisster in Kentucky, so she doesn't know I bought this yet.  that will teach her to go out of town and leave me alone :slap:

Congrats...
Howie was drooling over that truck but he already has a couple of nice old Dodge trucks. He must have mentioned that truck a dozen times in the last couple of weeks. He bought a real nice 80 Dodge crewcab dually a while back. I haven't been able to talk him out of that one... yet.  ;D

Congratulations, Allen !

I REALLY wanted that truck !

But....I would have had to build a big shed to keep it in.

Can't let that piece of history sit outside !

I'm glad it got a good home !

Looking forward to seeing it at Monster Mopar  :2thumbs:

I want to see a drag race of the haulers carrying Daytonas down the drag strip...

Thanks, guys I am pretty pumped about it!  I hope some one on here could put me in touch with with Cotton?  I would love to gather any info maybe even a photo with one of his wing cars sitting on top of the thing.  I think it will be neat piece of history :Twocents: I will collect what ever info Mr. Castle has on the truck when I pick it up.  Just wonder if Cotton had any advertising on the truck or if it was just black.  I would like to return it to how it looked when it was used to transport race cars.  As for Geno's Daytona, I dont think it will be riding on top the old Dodge truck any time soon.  I'm pretty sure he has a nice cozy enclosed set up for that jewel :yesnod:

Neat truck congrats on the purchase

Just some confused thoughts so a couple of questions

What year did Cotton stop having a nascar cup race team?

And isn't the truck a 1977?

So a Daytona would not have been racing then right?

Or was this a rebody type thing to a newer truck from an old hauler......I am not near my newsletter to remember the details

The truck is a '77 and was new then.    Chrysler gave the truck to Cotton who modified it into the ramp back it is today, and built the engine in it.    Neil told me a few weeks ago that Cotton used it to run to and from Detroit to get cars.   I think he was getting cars from Chrysler for salvage.   At some point, Neil bought it and used it to move cars around when he supplied race and stunt cars for movies.    Cotton still ran cars (Charger/Magnum) for Marty Robbins when the truck was new, so it is possible it was used, but I do not know for sure.  It does not have a tire rack on it, which is something I would expect for something that went to the track.     Either way, it is an affordable vintage hauler with a definite connection to two NASCAR legends.  It's perfect to haul an old Mopar.    It looks like a real nice piece and it's one of a kind.

When I saw that thing in the newsletter, I knew it wouldn't last long!  I would have loved to get it but I just bought back my old 66 Charger and didn't need to spend anything else for a while.  At least it is in good hands.  That would be the perfect car show hauler.  How many people can actually say their hauler has mopar history?!  Great score at a great price!!

Congrats on the purchase Allen!  There's some very cool history associated with that truck, even if it didn't haul an aero car to/from a NASCAR track.  The names associated with the truck DID have a connection, and I'm glad to see you get it.

I had my truck out on Friday delivering some materials to a guy, who may end up buying it.  Might not be able line up our haulers on the drag strip starting line, but that's a blessing in disguise.  Anyone trying to speed-shift one of these monsters (especially with a load on the back) is bucking for an expensive tow bill.  Great way to break parts.

When you pick it up, I'd be interested to know how it pulls, especially up the hills you'll be travelling through to bring it home.

:cheers:

I am going to go down in a couple weeks, probably in my wifes mini van and load the van up and head for home.  Mr. Castle said I would probably want to lengthen the ramps to make sure the nose didn't scrape before getting the Daytona.  That comment makes me think there was never a wing car on it :brickwall: I will send Mr Owens a letter, unless some one would have a phone # they could share, so I can find out as much as I can about the truck.  I would like to know if it ever had any graphics, like a COG emblem :shruggy:  If I could get pictures of it in that state, I could get the graphics reproduced.  Even if it never had a wing car or race car on it, it still has some cool history.  I hope I can find more info on it.

Just got off the phone with Neal.  He answered a few of my questions.  The car is in original paint as it wore in the (76 Chicago car show ?) It is the only one ever built.  He has a picture of it from when Cotton finished the build, that Cotton gave him when he bought the truck.  He said he is not sure of it's location but he will look for it.

It has a 361 built by Cotton Owens.

I just got off the phone with Mr. Owens.  I found some more interesting things.  Neal Castles was really the 4th owner and I am the fith.  Cotton told me he was given a bare truck from Chrysler and he buit this from about four trucks.  It was once a 4 car hauler that he did haul race cars on.  He did say he had never had a wing car on that truck.  He said he doesn't believe the truck was at the Chicago car show.  He sold the truck to Marty Robbins, after he died Mr. Owens purchased the truck back and converted it to a one car hauler.  He also said he had had a problem breaking cranks and at one point built a new 361 and installed that.  He told me I need to put a cummings diesel in the truck.  I said I hate to do that considering the history.  I am going to send him a stamped envelope and I hope he can find some of the pictures of the build and any other information on the truck.  He said the truck was featured in a magazine, and there was a picture of him in front of the truck.

Wow!!! I just went down and registered this thing.  I was figuring on getting AV tags $50 for 5 years.   Oh No!!!  They told me the truck was to big for AV tags.  It cost me $185 a year.  I figured title tags and taxes would be less than that.  I left with my tags after writing a check for $380. :o  Now insurance :brickwall: AV taged cars cost me under $100 per year to insure.  I'm afraid to guess what they are going to want :RantExplode:  I am sure I have seen fire trucks at shows with AV tags.  I need to try to look into this?

I have to carry "regular" license tags on my C500 2-ton truck also.  If you're going to do much more than put it in parades (and hauling a car with it definitely falls under that category), you're pretty much stuck with regular plates.

With your new license tags, will you fall under the CDL requirement?  Might also want to have Mr. Castles show you how to adjust those air brakes before you leave too - would hate for some overzealous DOT officer to ruin the return trip with your prize.

Do I need to get a CDL?  What does that take?  I plan on having Neal go over everything with me before I get on the road.  Does anyone know if haggerty or World wide will insure this truck?  My insurance said it doesn't matter how few miles I have to insure it as a Commercial truck and the lowest rate he had was just under $800 per year.  I probably won't put 800 miles per year on it, thats $1 per mile.

Do I need to get a CDL?

That might depend on what weight your truck is licensed for and/or it's GVWR.  I'm no expert on CDL in general or Illinois DOT laws in particular, but I think you might be OK as long as the truck has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 26,000 lbs or less.  My '60 has a GVWR of less than 20,000lbs, so it definitely falls below the limbo bar.  Your new truck is two steps heavier being a D700, so it might be close.  GVWR's are not something you can fudge, as they're set by the manufacturer.

As far as what it takes to get a CDL, you'll have to check with Illinois to be sure.  Here's a non-official website that has some info:

http://www.dmv.org/il-illinois/apply-cdl.php (http://www.dmv.org/il-illinois/apply-cdl.php)

I dug around and found the Illinois statutuory requirements for CDL, but it gets pretty wordy.  The info can be found in this link (http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/ilcs4.asp?DocName=062500050HCh%2E+6&ActID=1815&ChapAct=625%26nbsp%3BILCS%26nbsp%3B5%2F&ChapterID=49&ChapterName=VEHICLES&SectionID=28511&SeqStart=71300000&SeqEnd=90150000&ActName=Illinois+Vehicle+Code%2E) about 3/4 of the way down the loooong page.

If the Vehicle is over 26001 you would need at least a Class B CDL. With it being under that you might need a class C sometimes called a Chauffeurs license.

I should know.  I drove in the patch, OTR, heavy hauler & regularly run a 180k lb. plus crane down the road.  Unfortunately this part of my brain doesn't work any more.

But I can offer this:

I called the DMV and they told me as long as it is under 26001 GVW (it is 26000) and is not towing a vehicle over 10000 lbs or carring a load over 10000 lbs, not carring more than 16 passengers including driver, and not hauling hazardous waste, I do not need a CDL.

American Collector car said they could not insure it because it was to big :shruggy:  I had told them I was going to use it to haul the daytona to shows and show both of them.  I talked to a local old drag racer, Jim Rivskovsky.  He told me he had the same problem with his hauler after he told the insurance Co. he used the truck to carry his car to the track.  He said he changed companies and when asked what the truck was for he told them pleasure and got a much lower rate.  He said if they at what the truck is for tell them you are going to car shows and parades, and tell them the history of the truck.  I did that and got a rate of $150 per year.  I have some milage limitations, but I have far more miles per year than I will use.  The agent did need to see the vin.  She said Dodge did not make a D-700 after 76.  I told her the truck was given to Cotton Owens and may be the onl one they made.  She said they would just rate it as they would a 76 :scratchchin: Going to pick it up Monday and the Daytona the folloeing Friday.  Spring is looking up!

When I had my hauler I had to get commercial insurance.  They also said that I had to go through the weight stations.  You might want to check it out.

We have a two ton tow truck for the salvage yard here and they laugh at us in missouri if we stop at weigh stations .    :shruggy:

When I took my 2-ton on it's first long road trip to the 'Nats in 2005 (while hauling my R/T), I stopped at a couple weigh stations on the way out.  They both sent me through the bypass lanes, so I figured no one was worried about how much my rig weighed.  That was the last time I bothered going across the scales.

that is what I was hoping for on mine.  I was trying to find out if Cotton, Marty or Neal ever had signs or logos on the doors are anything.  Unfortunately it appears the truck was never marked.  I am realy having problems finding any more info or pictures of the truck.  I ran the VIN and got some interesting info
D= Model-  Dodge Monaco, Royal Monaco ? (this aint no Monaco)
7= price class- Code 7 unknown
1F= body type- code 1F unknown
R= Engine- 360ci lean burn (LA motor)
7= year- 1977
6= assembly plant- code 6 unknown
The last #s are sequence numbers

Not much info there, but it aint a Monaco

   R= Engine- 360ci lean burn (LA motor)     That's probably why Cotton built a motor for it. I have never heard anything good about a lean burn motor.

Thanks UFO.  Not sure why the on line decoder I came up with gave me the info it did?  413 Engine is strange, Cotton told me he built the 361 himself for the truck.  Could he have preffered the 361 to the 413?  I have not recieved much info from Cotton, I guess I can understand not wanting to waist his time talking about a truck he had built, after building so many historic cars, he probably thinks Im nuts asking him about a car hauler :shruggy:  THe 6 has me stumped could that denote a promo or race equipment?  I will keep looking for info and would appreciate anyone who may have some info getting in touch with me.

Thanks Geno, I found some interesting info.

D= D700
1= body style(Compact van;Conventional cab;LCF Cab;std HD tilt cab;long Conv cab)
F= GVW (19501-26000)
R= engine (413-3 V8) I have been told it was a Cotton Owens built 361 ??
7= Year (1977)
J= plant (Tecumseh Road Truck Canada)
0= wheel base (133,145,157,175, 181, 197, 211, 221)
0= Rating (2 1/2 ton)
remaining numbers sequence #s
I guess that is all available for body style and wheel base?  the 413 still has me baffled.

Greetings All,
That is a very nice looking truck.  It would be blast to drive.
It probably did come with a 413.  As mentioned, the 413 and 426 and 440 were still used in medium duty trucks, motorhomes, marine and industrial/stationary applications after they were phased out of use in passenger cars and trucks.  If, for some reason, they had a problem with the original engine early in its life, I could see the logic in a 361 replacement.  In the late 70s everyone was looking for gas mileage.  A 361 would give you the big block torque without all the CID.  And you really wouldn't need that much power just to haul a car - as opposed to if it were used as a gravel truck or something.  Replacement parts for the truck motor could have been a problem too given the state Chrysler was in at the time.  As many of you know, the industrial application motors vary quite a bit from those in cars and parts availability could have been an issue.
On the CDL, you probably won't need it unless you have air brakes or intend to license the truck for more than 26,001 combined gross vehicle weight.  Many of the DOT regulations are uniform from State to State but every State (and even weigh station lol) has their own regulations and interpretations of regulations.  It is best to at least make the effort of stopping in the first weigh station of each new State you enter.  If they wave you past, you are probably good for any stations in that State.
Great looking truck and probably one of the last.  Wasn't Dodge pretty much out of the intermediate truck game by 78 or 79?
Brennan

Guys, I started the truck last night and there is a small ovall light that is labeled above it "Control Failure" this is next to the air brake set and release Yellow rectangle.  This light lit up with a buzzer and remained on until I shut the truck off.  The truck sounded good and Idled smooth.  I have read the operators manual and read nothing about this indicator.  Does any one have an idea or know how I can fix it.  I also found the original Certa card and a inspection reciept listing the owner of the truck as Cotton Owens Interprizes and was inspected and signed by Cotton Owens.

My guess is since you say it has air brakes it's the low air warning light, buzzer.  You need a certain amount of air psi to release the brakes.  If the truck sat for a while the air tanks may have bled dry.

So either the compressor isn't building air
                      -you have an air leak keeping the tank from building pressure.

Do the axles have air cans on them?  You may have to learn how to adjust brakes.  Don't find out the hard way your brakes are out of adjustment, DAMHIK.   :-\
