Title: (73 Charger) Plum Crazy finally painted
Post by: Beer on April 11, 2009, 02:59:44 PM
Took the car in Friday,  see how far the $$ go, hoping all the new body panels are installed, aligned and everything is primed by end of May.

Here is how it looked prior to going in...

Ditching the Vinyl roof, and planning Plum Crazy w/ the 73 Rally Stripes.  VFN Bulge hood w/ Hood graphic. Likly use Phoenix Graphics for the stripes.

Here are some VFN pics

Naturally new pics when its pic worthy  ;)

Here is a photoshop of the look I am going for-less the white interior (going Black w/ the Bench seat for that high school sweetie sitting right up on ya theme the 70's were good for).

Torn between the Magnum wheels and the Torq Thrust Wheels (These seem to have better sizes available for DR's).

Still in the market for a new trunk lid (mine has the rusty lip ) and a dual exhaust rear valance.

Snapped some pics of it at the shop when I dropped off the hood.

They are going to hit the Drivers rocker first then put the fenders on and hood.  Then align the doors. Then weld in the new rear quarters.

Should have pics of the VFN Bulge Hood fitted in about a week

Boy, time flies, it seems like just three years ago you were shopping for a body shop that was willing to do your Charger. ;)

Trunk lids shouldn't be too hard to find...they go pretty cheap too.  Charger1973 had a photoshop done by DS440 a while back of a plum crazy 73 with a white rallye stripe, it looked really good, check it out.  I vote TT wheels!  I'm thinking of going with TTD's on our car...

Keep us updated, it's great to finally see progress being made of several late 3rd gens!

EDIT: Found it:

Thanks Mike, not needed yet.  Steve told me he has some insurance work so I am getting bumped back again.  The hold up buys me time to try and find the outer wheelhouses for the back and a valance with rear cut outs.

I also need to take a trip up to Eagle Lake to get my windshield and look over some part cars for a trunk lid.

Mid June I may take ya up on the photo's.  Hoping all the panels are done and the car is in primer end of June.  I get  home 18 June have a week home then have to go to Houston for a week (systems class).

Update as of today...

Above and below, the stock hood hinges needed to be hogged out a bit to get the arch needed to fit the VFN hood correctly, other than that the hood fits perfectly.

End of  next wek, the fenders should be back on, the Plum Crazy laid down on the undersides, and the top painted primer black, so the front clip should be ready for paint.  Then they will continue on the rear pass side.

Thanks Mike, that would great!
I spent a bit of time chatting with John at Cope Racing, he says a 727 is what I should go for.

The cam change/Head porting is my quest for 12's first time out...wanna build it once and have it met the expectations.

Stuck in Houston for another week :brickwall:

Steve the shop owner promised me some pics, have not got them yet, from our last call I am told the pass door is now in Black Primer as well as the roof.  They are continuing on the driverside outer wheelhouse and rocker area.

Perhaps end of next week the new rear quaters will be welded on.

They have asked for the rear back glass as well and window trim.

Pics when I get em. But slowly getting progress out of the project!

Hope to have it all primer next week.
Options are the same primer black it is now, or a "Hot Rod Black".  I am leaning towards the hot rod black.  Seems the Black primer you can see the shades are inconsistant, so I think a Hot rod black as base for the Plum Crazy would be better than the primer I got now.

Need to finish half of the 8 3/4" Axle (wire-wheeling) and paint that.  Have the Caltrac rear suspension coming and need to weld in the sub frame connectors.  Install the rear and suspension...then wait til end of Sept for final paint.

I am trying to get the shop to mix me some gloss black with the same metallic volume the Plum Crazy will have for the bulge and the side stripes.

Back Home!  These are shots the shop sent me, I have not been up to look myself.  Bringing the Subframe connectors up and have the Caltrac Springs and Caltrac Suspension to put in next.

Called AMD TODAY to get an update on the famed rear valance with cutouts...EVERY CALL promises promises...Todays news  15 August they will have a test piece and if it goes well production and on the shelves in two monthes...FUNNY...I been listening to that shit for a YEAR now.

Beer,
Those quarters look great, did the shop have many fitment issues with them. I was just wondering I haven't heard many people comment on the 73-74 quarters. They look great in the pics  :2thumbs:

From talking with the shop, they had some difficultly with the rear valance and had to modify that a bit to fit (rear valance was from a 73 as well, Dr. Pimp from Canada sent it to me).  I am heading up to the shop tomorrow to see it, going to drop off the Subframe connectors.

Just talked to the shop.

Plan forward, Tuesday I am moved to the front, Jack up the rear, remove the 8 1/4" rear, put in Subframe connectors, clean up th underside and "rhino liner" underside.  Final patch welding at rear vertical trunk area to be done.

I get home Thursday, and Saturday the 12, I drop off the 8 3/4" rear w/ Caltrac setup for installation.

Then Paint quote and Paint last two weeks in Sept.

PHOTOSHOP of another members car, color changed to Plum Crazy, with what look I am thinking of (Hood Graphics may be a bit different, either 73 Style or painted Bulge Gloss Black w/ -same metallic amount as the Plum)...
Wheels will be Magnum or I may go with powdercoated Black Rally cop wheels with Chrome Covers.

Thanks Mike, should be good, they are wrapping up a Galaxy today, I move back to being in Work Tuesday...so figure take out the rear, subframe connectors clean up bottom and finish the trunk patches, that should take em til Thurs/Fri so I can get it.

Shoot me your cell # and I will give ya a call and you can meet me there if you like.

Looking to do Oxford a few times with the Blue car, Sprayed it last time home and got a 7.58 w/ 75 shot.  Still need to do some tuning with EFI Live, but if your up for meeting me at Stretch it or Oxford dragway I will give ya a ring with my plans.  Looking for 7.3-7.4 at Oxford next couple weeks (1/8 Mile).  Probably Spray a 125 dry when I swap out my bad WB sensor.

Hoping between 18-25 Sept, they still have not given me a quote for paint yet...

I got a place to take it in Oct when I am back offshore for Steering column replacement (Tan one for Black one)Master Cylinder installed then Brake/Fuel lines and probably front Suspension rebuild prior to putting the engine in.

Can't wait to see the Rear in w/ Caltracs and the Adjustable shocks. Then follow that up w/ Paint should be a great month.

Mid Oct is getting the Cope 727, may have drivetrain in place by Christmas  ;D

Have new Rear Leaf Front Perches coming, new rear Shackles, as well as the Trunk and Door weatherstripping...Hood graphic should be here Friday (undecided on if that will be painted on, or if I will use the decal).  Rear Spoiler was dropped off the shop, last visit.  Maybe end of next week for paint

The Paddock for the weatherstripping.  Bringing the parts up probably Tuesday. The Hood graphic is a stencil, so it looks like that will be painted on, so the "Rally side stripes", may become the rear bumble bee stripe...

Heading up to the shop for pics and parts drop off...Entire body is not painted yet...but they have sprayed the door jams and rehung the doors.

They are saying end of week likely. The hood graphics may slow them down though...

Is it tomorrow yet???  Should be Purple Tuesday. Then the Black goes on, then the clear coat, this of course is after I go back to the Gulf of Mexico for three weeks...

I really like member Banana Wama's Paint scheme and plan on duplicating, here are some color changer pic of his (his is yellow, I changed it to Plum Crazy)

Here is how I am going to have the Bulge painted with repo Callouts (340 MAGNUM ) added.

Trunk rear like this as well (I have the Spoiler to).

Going to hold off on the rally Side graphics (Wife has issues with them for some reason...and it was her grandparents car so she has some say).

Next month...Rims/Tires  Torq Thrust D, Magnum, or Mopar Police Rally 42 Series wheels (Black) are in the running.  :scratchchin:

I can't wait to see it with the Gloss Blackout and pin stripe...

Hood is getting more paint, they said probably two more coats.  They were block sanding the rest of the car so the car was pretty dusty.  The painted parts were painted individually and bolted on.

Looks very good, I see they painted the inside of the front valance the proper color. Is this something they did on their own or did you have to direct them?

They did that on their own, I think that piece was still stock when they got it, so they probably just duplicated what they were given and substituted the Purple for the bronze that was on the old paint job.

I don't think so, I think about a week more total...they want the primer to cure on what they block sanded etc...Two days ago when I was there they said in about 7-10 days it would be complete (Black and clearcoat included).  I am on my drilling rig now in the Gulf of Mexico for three weeks so I cannot check on em...I may need my man in the field Mike to drop by the shop (he is less than 30 minutes from it...) for real time intelligence. The owner of the shop is computer challenged so, if its painted, he takes the pictures, then brings the camera home to his wife who then sends the pics...sometimes they are the right pics sometimes they are not LOL...

Phone call today indicates Wednesday 7 Oct for being all purple, that means pics to me by maybe 8 Oct. The new rear w/ Caltracs will be put in after the body is Purple.

Then the Black will be put on no later than the 14th... so estimate final pics two weeks from today.  Will probably have MikePCMS visit the shop for me in about 10-14 days.  I get home the 22nd, so pick up sometime 22-30th Oct, then reassembly.  On the road maybe this spring.

This tuesday it should all be purple, then the week when you get back from Viriginia, it should have the Black Bulge and Rear trunk Black trim and the spoiler will likely be bolted on  ;D

Hey Mike, called this morning and looks like Wednesday now. Steve said to show up as close to 5 PM as possible.  They are wet sanding the primer some more on the rear today (focusing on the top seams of the new rear panels-right at the bodyline where the welds were), and should start spraying color tomorrow around 1 PM.

LOL its killing me but I told them I was in no rush and to take their time  :D

No problem. Hoping there is no shrinkage issues on the primer. Is Steve gonna seal the whole carit prior to spraying?
So Wednesday go then. Lemme know if anything changes.

I called them twice today but they must have been busy so I just decided to show up anyway.
Got to Steve's place about 1640.  Steve's boy was squirting the Charger but no chance for me to get pictures through the window.  But...the car has color on it, I saw it live and actually watched him spray the entire pass door. :icon_smile_big:  I talked to one of the boys and asked permission to stop by tomorrow after work. They will have it cut and buffed by the time I show up.  He told me they were wet sanding the body more today and I imagine that is what delayed their painting of the beast.  I touched your plate bracket...(ooooh puurrrrple, in my best homer simpson) that was laying on one of those old junky Vettes they had sitting around. ;D

So, tomorrow for some quick shots and then I have to jam to Virginia for a couple days.  I also plan on tuesday to get some more shots, but I will confirm with you and steve prior.

Mike out!

ok, so I screwed with one picture.  :icon_smile_cool:

Car looks really nice. Straight. It is not cut and buffed in these pictures at all, this is how it laid out on the car.  Sittin all weekend, block with 1200 next week, black goes on and then clear it all at once again.  Then color sand and buff again I'm sure after that clear dries.

Off to get some last minute stuff in and then couple hours rest,  then drive to VA. :2thumbs:

Sorry took so long for me to comment, you were posting them right at watch turnover and my Rig Manager called as well.

Man I cant wait till now for the black!

I think they are going to put the rear (Caltrac) in now that its Sprayed as well this week.  I have to see the color in daylight but I think I am gonna be very pleased!

I was gonna get the Police wheels and some other items, but... I am gonna hold off, I think I am gonna have some paint over-run cost I am gonna need to cover to bring the car home  :D

I too and looking forward to seeing it for real in the sunlight!

Oldrock and Foreman72 I been reading your threads too!  I may be calling on you guys for some assembly pics, been a few years when I took it apart and the Disassembly Photo CD I made I lost so I may be asking for some pics on how some stuff goes back together.

I was expecting only two weeks home but just got told I get my full three (work three weeks on three off offshore), so I should be able to make some real headway in assembly (may see some parts of the garage i have not seen in years as well :o).   Tires/Wheels, Torque converter, tranny, and some interior pieces are the only major parts left to purchase.

Hood is painted, Steve just called the rig (ut O, double secret weekend rate=$$$ but getting it done =  :2thumbs:)...anyone want to see the pics?  He says it looks pretty good, but he may be a bit biased since he sprayed it...they are gonna sand it so the purple/black edge is not felt, then clearcoat the hood again.

Jim, the paint looks awesome ! I'm really liking the bulge hood with the callouts and blackout treatment.

That's going to be one sharp & quick car once you're done.  :2thumbs:

I hope to see it and meet you some day.

Thanks Moparsons!

Talked with Steve at the shop this morning, They are doing the Black on the trunk lid (rear lip) today and will have that clear coated tomorrow. Similiar to Bannna's Wana's (his yellow one photoshopped below)

Should have Shop Pics of the Hood/front clip uncovered tonite w/ the callouts in place. He says he is really pleased with how the front came out with the Gloss Black and the callouts against the Plum Crazy Purple.

Tommorrow night pics of the trunk area with the Spoiler in place.

Weekend project is going to be installing the rear Suspension.

Looking on track for me picking up 23rd.

Jim

Just called the shop.

Had some issues on the clear with the doors, they are sanding and will reshoot the clear on the doors.  Clear should be done this week.  This weekend Steve will be putting the rear suspension in.  Should have new pics Monday of the car overall finished and w/ Suspension in. Discussed the rear trunk lid and Steve says that w/ the clear the trunk lid looks great, and I will like the look when I see it in person.  On track for a Friday Oct 23 pick up.

Called the shop, they said there is still some solvent pop in areas, going to check it out Friday when I pick it up.

Likely if its an issue for me, they can get it when AMD comes out with the Dual exhaust cutout valance (will have them fit it and paint it).

Mike I think will post some pics later tonite, if he makes the shop. Should be the first pics of it with everything uncovered.

They are wrapping up welding in the subframe connectors today, and tomorrow they will be bolting on the marker lights, locksets, spoiler and the door handles, as well as setting the rear window and trim back in place.

Get off the rig tomorrow! A Beer version of Planes trains and automobiles...will be Helicoptor, Bus, Plane, truck LOL...

Friday Morning load the trailer on the truck and off to get the Charger and bring it home  :yesnod:

+1 for the side stripes...I love 73/74 Rallye stripes. My Rallye was actually a stripe-delete car, but when I get it painted one day, I want to install a stripe.
