Title: High Profile Tyres On 18's
Post by: JMF on March 31, 2019, 10:50:17 AM
Is anyone running high profile tyres on 18's on the rear ? Eg 255/70/18

I want to keep the 18" wheels I have but I prefer the look of a fatter looking tyre rather than the low profile tyres that this size usually has , anyone got any pics ? Plus I want the car to sit a bit higher on the rear which I assume a taller tyre will help ? I currently have 265/40/18's on the rear , sorry it's not a Charger it's on my 70 Satellite below , thanks

Apologies for not answering re the tires.  I think the only issue would be the overall diameter and fitting in the wheel wells and I am sure people will have an idea of what the limits are.

My main reason for posting though is to say that your car looks very nice.

Thanks for that, yours does too : )

Doing some research, I think maybe 265/60/18 would be more suited as 70 may be a bit too much to fit under there ?

I don't think you can get street tires in anything over a 45 series (maybe 50?) for an 18" wheel. Only tires you'll find will be truck tires. And if you do find 60 series tires, you'll most likely have fitment issues.

I don't know man, I think the size you mention wouldn't look good and might not fit.  The 4 wheel drive truck I had didn't even have tires as tall as 255/70R18!  :smilielol:  I think you are heading in the right direction with the 265/60R18.  I would fit the widest tire I could, but I'm under the impression Road Runners don't have as much space to work with as Chargers.

I had 305/45R18 on the back until they went bald: First picture, supposed to be 28.8" tall, they did rub on big bumps.  Because I don't have overdrive I need a tire that is at least 28" tall if not taller

I temporarily have 255/55R18 truck tires on now: last two pics.  They look kinda dumb and are too narrow

I'm thinking now maybe just buying a set of 15's , do you think 285/70/15's would work on the rear ? I need quite a tall tyre because the electric exhaust cutouts sit quite low and there was some clearance issues on bumps etc when I had 14's on there, thanks

Anyone want to take a guess what the rear wheel and tyre size is in the one below ? That's the kind of look I want , ive emailed them to find out

I just ordered a set of these for my car. 28by12R15 for the rear, which are 28" tall, and 26by10R15 for the front which are 26". The tires are similar to what's on the car now(same height for sure), however, sitting on the floor they do look wider. They were supposed to be mounted a couple days ago, but scheduling issues.....

Looks like you can get these in quite a few heights to suit your needs. Can get rears in 26, 28, 29 or 30"

Anyone else get frustrated that Chrysler made the rear arches so tight on these cars ? Every Mopar i've ever had i've had to do extensive research on how big a tyre I can get at the rear lol

Hahaha. When you look at how narrow the original tires that cars came with back in the day, as well as how inset they are, it's easy to see how this never crossed their mind.

How does 29 x 12.5 like on the Mickey Thompsons translate to the more standard tyre size like 295/50/15 etc ?

Don't know, but a 28x12R15 translates to 305/55R15, if that helps?

That's still a pretty tall tire, and a good deal wider than the first two sizes mentioned.  If they fit, you certainly shouldn't need to worry about ground clearance.  I think any size on a 15"rim with a decent amount of height will give you the look you are after.  Do you have pictures of how and where the cutouts are?

I'm guessing around 20mm wider and 60 profile to be that tall, so 315/60R15?

Here is a tire size calculator.  Put in a given size and it can convert metric to standard or standard to metric.      :2thumbs:

solution is simple... 18"s doesn't fit good on our cars where rubbers look good ;). I always have said 17" is the max. But if likes the fat rubbers look, still 17s are too much.

That is YOUR opinion, Nacho. Some like a larger wheel.

Sure!! But get big rims and fat tires are not easy to match unless you get a big foot. Is like try to get a street car being a 10 seconds car ( naturally aspirated ). One or the other but you can't get both at the same time!

Then my opinion is 17" is the max size of rim still with good size and looking rubbers on them. Bigger will get a a thin layer of rubber around making it look like a locomotive over rails LOL ( or allmost guetto look LOL ). That's an opinion! The other is a fact! LOL.  I have seen some 18"s still looking good but when I see 20s or so... damn! Too ugly!

Very nice KD, I am usually not a fan of larger wheels on a Charger but can't say I have seen those before.. love the stance as well!

Kern, what size are your rear tires? I currently have 275/40R20 on my back. They occasionally rub so I'm thinking about going to an 18"

I currently have a 275-40-18 up front and a 295-45-18 in the back. I do get tire rub in the outer wheel tubs due to that silly bulge the factory placed there.
Thanks for the kind words.   :2thumbs:

Think i'm going to go 15's

Pretty sure on the rear....

15 x 8 with 275/60/15 with 3.75" backspace

15 x 7 front with 3.75" backspace but i'm a bit unsure on the tyres, I need a fairly tall tyre because I can't go less than my current ones which are 26.3" tall because any lower the cutouts will hit on speed bumps etc

So i'm thinking either 225/70/15 or 245/60/15

Does these sizes fit ok on a 15 x 7 at the front ?

Can't go 235/60/15 because these are a shorter tyre than my current fronts

Thanks

Yeah...I could cut it out and fabricate a patch to allow more clearance BUT I may just go with a lower profile rear tire. I'm sure most will think I should stick with the taller rear tire but you can't live to make others happy, right?

I have 255/60 on all 4 corners 15x7" Rallye rims. Is the widest being safe for the tire I can go on 7", so sure, you can go 245 on them

Paint or powdercoat the hoop black.  Gives an optical illusion of bigger sidewall.
