Title: Here we go again
Post by: taxspeaker on March 19, 2022, 09:52:38 PM
Back a few years ago I drove my Alpine White Superbird to Alaska from Indiana, and then to Key West. My only regret was not taking a bit longer and the inability of my son to come along because of a pregnant wife. (His wife, not mine). Link to that story http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,112825.0.html

Anyway, this evening I committed to and registered the same Alpine White Bird for the Western Mopar Madness car show in Edmonton Alberta on July 23 and 24th, along with the psychedelic purple Superbird. My son will accompany me this time along with his actual camera and drone skills. We will put the Purple Bird on the back of the ramp truck and drive the white Bird, leaving Indiana on July 20 and retracing the exact route from several years back, leaving northbound out of Edmonton on the 25th for Alaska once again, but leaving the ramp truck and purple bird in a secure lot in Edmonton until we come back through coming south several days later.

The week before we will be at the Chrysler Nationals with the Petty Blue 6 pack Bird in the survivor tent, so lots of driving that month. I took the whole month off from work to do this while I still can physically and mentally, and am lucky enough for my wife to support the endeavor. Just like the first Alaska trip, no trail cars from Edmonton north and the same engine, transmission and 355 rear end. This time the radio works though, the ECM was moved off of the hot firewall to a protected cool spot inside the nose and the steering and brakes have been rebuilt in preparation. Will be doing a test road trip on the white Bird in 2 weeks again. Much like several years ago I will be posting pictures and summaries of the trip (or my son will) and hope to revisit a couple of great folks I met on the 1st trip. Several years ago I was able to fix the multitude of mechanical issues on the trip and hope to be able to do it again for whatever comes up.

More to come
Bob

Hi John,                  26 March 2022

Hope all is well with you and your lady. Was noticing the post with the girls on the wing of the Super Bird. That had to be taken at a Sonic Drive in. How do we know? Take a look at the tray hanging on the driver side window. It's a Sonic tray, just like the one we have.

Take care, we are permanently here in Phoenix; no more moving so you know where to find us.

Take Care Amigo.

Dan-get in gear and join in. I can send you the detailed schedule and the hotel info where I have reservations along the way if you want it. The super owner at LeDuc Chrysler have given me permission to leave the ramp truck and Hemi Bird parked there while I drive on up to Alaska, and then I can pick it up on the way back, and the guys at the Edmonton Mopar Assn have been great. They are going to try and break the All-Canada record for aero cars at the Western Mopar Madness show. Here is the link to the brochure: https://emawmm.com/

Aerolith John. Indeed, those pictures are mine from the same Bird that is going back for trip #2. In fact the 2nd picture is actually from Destruction Bay Yukon! Alas, the girls are not going to be with me! Hoovie-well I watched his latest video about how he got taken when he got the Bird-clearly drama added for YouTube-all of us that own or have bought old cars have Gremlins to work through and they never stop. I burst out laughing when he complained about leaks-show me a non-leaking Mopar and I will show you a model car!

Anyway, thanks for the comments but I have to go back to work. And here is a picture at on the road from Carcross Yukon to Skagway I don't think I have posted before.

Hi John,                27 March 2022

The bridge in the photo is the newest bridge that replaced the old "Seven Mile" bridge. It's 35,862 ft. (10,931 m) or 6.79 miles (10.93 km) in length. That info came from Wikipedia.

Portions of the old bridge are still in existence. Drove the old one many times in 1963 and 1964 while stationed at the US Naval Base in Key West.

Drove the old bridge at 100+ mph returning from Miami to the base in KW one Sunday evening. Many stories about some of the crazy things we did driving between KW - Miami - KW. I think the speed limit at that time was 45 mph. Hope the statute of limitations is in affect.

Take Care Limy John.

Hi Folks,               28 March 2022

The old bridge was two lanes, one each direction and no divider, no shoulder. It was a crazy stunt from which we survived. I'd never try it again; too easy to harm or kill some innocent person.

That was back when I was of the ripe old age of 23, young, dumb, not yet smart.

If you are ever on that bridge, take a leisurely drive, enjoy the scenery and the history of how that bridge came about. Some of the old bridge is still intact and is used for fishing. You can walk on it without having to worry about some speeding dumbass possibly hitting you.

That picture was probably taken at the Aero cars reunion, the Sonic is next door to the Wellborn museum in Alabama.

Hi Ben,                   28 March 2022

Thanks for filling in the blank. We obtained our tray while walking one of our pups. It was lying alongside the road about a mile and a half from the closest Sonic. It was a mess so we cleaned it up and have it as an "Automotive Souvenir." The Sonic's in Texas and Arizona no longer use trays; instead they use bags and cardboard containers.

Since we often visit Sonics here in Arizona, we're thinking of keeping it in our daily driver (Troka) for the times we eat there. Have to say, their food has improved a lot over the past few years.

Hi 69_500,               02 April 2022

Thank you 69-500. We now have one blank and two answers; a multiple choice quiz.

Actually makes it more interesting, adds a bit of uncertainty. Anyone know who owns / owned the Super Bird when the photo was taken?

Since we haven't a clue as to what the true answer is, we'll depend upon you-all.

Thanks for making this more interesting.

God bless America!

Happy Easter to everyone in the USofA who owns a Mopar or any ICE CAR lol...

The end of 'gas guzzling' is getting close for us Brits, so enjoy life 'and the GAS' whilst you can...

GAS has a different meaning here, but its getting expensive, whichever one you use!

We was gonna do the California to Talladega trip back in the 'naughties', but life got in the way!
Don't make excuses just 'gas em up' and drive the pants off it!

Make new memories and don't rely on the 'OLD ONES'...

We are now about 2 months out from Alaska trip #2. I am much better prepared this time, and technology has improved as well. Yesterday I completed a 140 mile test road trip on the backroads of Indiana. Here are the results:

All fuel was non-ethanol 92 octane-we have a local marathon that sells it and I filled up before I went.
Mileage was 11.63 MPG, but there are a number of small towns, construction and stop signs, so pretty much in line with my expectations. It should be around 12.5-13 MPG according to the 1st trip.
I drove the state highways yesterday because the starting, stopping and 65-70mph segments match the Alaska highway much better than 70mph interstates, plus its less boring.

I have my cell phone mounted at eye level on a non-permanent magnet mount so I could see my actual speed on GPS. I had Gary Gazda at 4 wheel parts & service in Minnesota rebuild the rear end a year or so ago after some rear whine, and he put in the original 3:55 gears and I put in the correct 39 tooth speedo gear, so I was curious to see if speedo matched actual speed as noted on phone GPS. It matched perfectly at all speeds. I had also replaced rear end bearings and seals at that time so happy to report no whining. Gary & Wendy stopped by the shop this spring to see the wing cars.

Although the radio works now (on the 1st trip I blew the speaker in the first 30 minutes of a 10,000 mile trip), but with the 85 degree air temps yesterday I had the windows down and couldn't hear it, so it was left turned off. Not really an issue for me since the voices in my head keep me company!

Oil consumption-none. I use Brad Penn oil and changed it and the filter prior to the test trip. The oil pressure gauge is still funky, just like on the 1st Alaska trip, but I have learned it seems to be there primarily for entertainment. The aftermarket sending units are all crap and unless I can find an OEM unit, the entertainment will just have to be enough since the gauge reads 20PSi at highway speeds and the engine only has 2500 miles since it was rebuilt.

The odometer turned 49,000 miles on the trip, so it will be somewhere in the mid to upper 50,000 mile range when I get home.

Water temperature is fine at highway speeds, but it overheated in traffic in the little town of Salem, Indiana (home of  Charlie Glotzbach's Salem Speedway). I am considering replacing the Zerex antifreeze with distilled water and a bottle of water wetter. I know Troy and some others swear by that and I would be curious to hear comments. I will not change the radiator or original fan or water pump-I'm funny about using things the way they were originally made.

The trip was perfect. I heard 1 rattle in a passenger door and when I got back to the shop I pulled the panel off and fixed what I think is the culprit. Can't really hear it above 50MPH anyway.

In preparation for the trip, I did the following items-I don't trust this to anyone else including Ryan or Matt, since I do the trip solo, so I do the mechanic stuff personally and slowly on this Bird.
I put in an Optima RedTop battery for cranking power safety. The Mopar knock off batteries seem to be garbage.
Flushed transmission fluid. While the car was on the lift I checked every nut, bolt and hose underneath for tightness.
Checked build date on tires (3 years old), and checked air in all tires, plus the spare.
I rebuilt the carb and adjusted choke about 5 times. It is now at a good level, but the daggone carb bowl drains over 2 nights, so I have to pump the heck out of the gas, These AFB's, ugh.

Having done it before, my checklist is slightly different now. Still taking lots of fluids, extra belts and hoses, plus a can of flat fix and one of those all-in-one starter batteries, a fender cover and a siphon hose.
Electrical parts: coil, 2 ballast resistors, 2 ECM's, voltage regulator, starter relay and a water pump. I will probably throw in a starter too.
Tools-no big changes but added an electric impact-1 of those battery ones just in case. That reminds me to check lugnut tightness.
Right behind me on the floor is the special box with a fire extinguisher, first aid kit, flashlight, gloves, paper towels, trash bags, glass cleaner (millions of bugs) and a hammer for deterrent and persuasion.
In the console I have tylenol, pepto bismol, Tums, cell phone lighter adapter and cord and a drink holder. Because there is no cell service up there I have an old fashioned atlas in the back seat. I also have a strategically hidden extra set of keys and, like before, will rent a satellite phone for a month.

To go into Canada I have to pre-register 72 hours out and upload Covid vaccine info and get approved according to their website.

Like the 1st trip, I have a pretty aggressive driving schedule at first, and have made advance hotel reservations going north, nothing coming south yet-last time I slept in the car.
July 20 Leave Louisville and drive to St CLoud, MN (about 800 miles)
July 21 Leave St CLoud, and drive to Regina, SK (about 750 miles)
July 22 Leave Regina and drive to Edmonton (about 500 miles). The Western Mopar Madness show is having a meet and greet at a local steakhouse that I want to get to.
July 23 and 24-Western Mopar Madness show. That night I will move the purple Hemi Superbird to the showroom at Leduc Chrysler, and park the ramp truck on their lot somewhere.
July 25 leave Edmonton and drive to Ft Nelson BC-about 600 miles I think
July 26, leave Ft Nelson and drive to Yukon Territory and on to SKagway Alaska, spending night in Skagway if I can cross customs and return. That's where I got arrested the 1st time for calling a customs agent a moron when he called the Superbird a Superbee, so I may reconsider that.
At this point I stopped making hotel reservations so I can drive a little more slowly and see a bit more. Hope to get home the 1st of August

Sorry for the long-winded story.
Like last trip, once it is going  I will try to post daily updates.
See you at Carlisle!

It's Kevin Hurd's V-code Superbird, and the girls volunteer their time for photos for Brenda Walls' Ridgely Car Show. 2021 was the last year for that VERY cool event.  I believe the photo was taken in Bridgeville, Delaware.

You lucky, lucky MAN!

I have never been anywhere in a Superbird myself, its one thing that has evaded me for 40 years!

To drive across America and Canada in such an iconic car is truly awesome... :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

But (one day) if my numbers come up I will join you, or whom ever else does this in a HEMI Daytona lol...

To keep my Carbon footprint at an acceptable level I haven't driven a Mopar for over ten years...

(We only go out once a week a trip of 10 miles in an eco Jap car... :slap: :smilielol: :eek2:)

Cripes, the USofA is a BIG place...

Flown across it many times at 650mph, that was a looong trip even by AIR!
Yep long! I worked out of Prudhoe Bay on the North Slope for almost 30 years. I flew up and back every two weeks. Usually from Kansas City. I was in the air on 911. That was the longest trip ever. Alaska is a Beautiful state!

Trip started today with an issue-blew power steering return hose loading on trailer. Fixed it.

Then, because crawling under car is such a pain, I bought $80 worth of those over the tire tie downs at Carlisle and fought them all day. Got to hotel and replaced them with regular tie downs after losing 4 hours to stops for over the tire crap.

Made only 520 miles today, no other issues.glad I left a day early. For some reason my laptop is blocked from DC website  so my office is posting updates and pictures on Facebook for Jennings wing cars.

I am driving purple ramp truck with purple bird on it and pulling trailer with white bird on it to edmonton-arriving Friday. Then leaving truck and purple car and trailer there and driving white bird on to alaska.

3 go pros are mounted on white bird and 1 on ramp truck, all wired for sound, so hoping for good pictures. Nothing worth saving today in indiana, Illinois or Wisconsin except some lady giving me the finger near Chicago!

Hi Bob,               24 July 2022

Hope the trip is progressing well. Haven't seen any posts on your progress. Think you mentioned updates are on your YouTube channel. Unfortunately, our old wind-up PC is no longer recognized by YouTube. Please take care and have a great time.

All is well here though we are expecting a cold spell this week. Supposed to get down to 98 during the day with a nighttime low of 83. Got my woolies out just for the occasion.

Thanks Christine for asking. I finished the fantastic car show at western mopar madness in edmonton alberta about an hour ago. Got to run the purple hemi bird down quarter mile yesterday too.
Leaving 5:30 am for Ft nelson, BC for tomorrow, then on to yukon on Tuesday. Several minor mechanical issues all solved. One moose encounter but no wreck or jackknife.

Met with several old friends-cody Krueger, Bob with the daytona. My Saskatoon daytona buddy and saw some really cool cars. 2,000 miles done, 2,000 more to go north I think.
Car has another gas leak at fill up. Watching it for worse. Hope it is not splitting again like 5 years ago in the same place.

Really, really bad roads in northern alberta. Lost caliper bolt, tailpipe chrome extension (saved it), negative coil terminal nutvibrated loose-killing power ( took a while to find that). Now in ft nelson alberta fixing caliper and exhaust on side of road.
Hope to be heading north again within the hour.

Weather fine, 1 roadside so far. Lots of gravel and slides ahead for 30 kilometers.
Need a good meal-toad river lodge is next stop (hopefully)

Crossed into alaska 2am edt. A day of roadsides, dirt roads, detours, gravel, bears, moose, lots of bison and incredible views. Once fixed car ran rlawlessly all day, averaging 12.5-13mpg.

I am posting from cell and can't put up pictures. Live cameras recorded all days from 2 views, and lots of separate photos. I will see if Steve (tantop) can post for me like last time.

I'm taking all day tomorrow to sightsee and then beginning the long drive home Thursday

Hi Steve, Bob, Ryan,              31 July 2022

Nice job of posting Bob's photos. In photo 6 there are two Indiana plates with custom messages. Interesting there are two Bird plates on that post and Bob's there. There's no way those were attached to that post by Bob . . . .  could this just be a "Coincidence?"

Thanks Bob, Steve and Ryan.

Actually I posted the top plate "sbird 70" on my 1st trip 5 years ago, and the bottom plate "birdnv" last week. Got home 2:30 this morning. 8,000 miles, a car show, a run down the strip, a jaunt up to alaska and 40 hours of film later, finally home. The old white bird ran great, leaks rain like a sieve to the point of danger, and looks like it was dipped in a mud bath and then sprayed with bugs.

But, it's on the lift and mechanically is fine, got 12.5 mpg and was dependable.

The purple bird has seen its last rain/sun. The uv rays are damaging the paint and after a good cleaning this week it will do indoor shows only, and be covered here in the shop.

The 1999 dodge ram 3500 ramp truck is a beast! 14.5 mpg the whole trip, never knew anything was on it and lowered the yukon bug population by thousands. It will also get physically cleaned t his week.

The 24 foot open trailer also was flawless. We mounted 4 winch ratchet tie downs, a front spare and some safety stuff and new tires before the trip.it is now for sale-ordered a new one with more features.

After I catch my breath and sleep will post some pictures.
BtW 2 trips to Alaska in a Superbird is enough!

We are going to try to record a complete story of this year's trip today on video-not sure what the boys will do with it, but they want 2 or 3 different things and I just ramble, then they post it on YouTube

One of the neatest things on the entire trip was the 2 day car show stay for Western Mopar Madness in Edmonton, Alberta. We think we have hospitality here in the southern US-we don't know what hospitality is compared to the folks in Edmonton. What an incredible, friendly, appreciative group of people.

A short story-they wanted me to run the Purple Hemi Bird down the 1/4 mile, but first I had to pass a tech inspection. Figuring there was no way the car would pass (no roll bar, driveshaft loop or any other modern safety things) they decided to let me go anyway with a promise I would not keep my foot in it after the starting line. Vince Craig photographer snapped a picture of the crusty old Bird coming to the tree, and it is one of my favorite pictures of this legend. The rest of the story-well, I lit it up, staged and then, like the fat old fool I am, proceeded to redlight-clearly a Christmas tree malfunction.

I have kept a log of every day of the trip, but thought I would post my top 10 mechanical things learned in 2 trips from Indiana to Alaska and 1 from Indiana to Key West in this 1970 Superbird #177569.

1. Remove caliper bolts, re-install with locktite and torque to specs. They won't hold if just torqued to specs.-I lost 1 on each trip.
2. Consider leaving old points-based distributor system in the car. It works.
3. If going to Mopar electronic system, DO NOT mount control module on firewall-it gets too hot-mount it in a protected yet cooler area under the nose
4. Be prepared on the Mopar electronic distributor and carry an extra reluctor-I had to replace one-easy to do but hard to figure out.
5. The 50 year old parts don't break, but anything you replaced with "new and better" will
6. Duct tape, hoses, belts and ballast resistors-I carry a travel kit with me in the trunk at all times.
7. If you carry a set of ratchets and sockets, actually put them in the car instead of forgetting them in the truck. Lieing on the side of the road under the car with a pair of vise grips and an adjustable wrench is not fun, particularly when you are a well insulated, experienced individual. (fat and old)
8. Check and recheck tightness of every muffler clamp, hanger and nut.
9. Check lugnut tightness at every stop-I carry an extra 1/2" drive breaker bar with a 4" extension and both a 3/4" and 13/16" socket in the trunk on the cars now.
10. Don't let someone else check lugnuts if you still have old left-hand threads on drivers side.
11. Extra-carry a can of WIndex and paper towels-you will need them
12. Don't call customs officer a moron-this worked fine on the 2nd trip.

Postscript-my wife made me promise not to do this again and I agree. But, there are other trips and Quoddy Point Maine (easternmost part of US) is calling and heck, if you go that far, Newfoundland is in reach. I always wanted to drive to Dildo, NB anyway.

Hi 472 R/T SE,                  27 August 2022

I now understand that you are paralyzed and your mobility is limited. I feel for you and don't understand what WINGIN IT was trying to say with his posted comment. Maybe he thought the remark was funny. We don't know.

Some folks read things into what others write. Difficult to say if this was on purpose or an unintended faux pa.

Don't take it personally even though it was directed at you. We'd give WINGIN IT time to rethink what he posted. If he's a straight shooter, he will man up to it and fix it.

I've done a lot of shit in my life. I've retaliated when someone screwed with me. I have no regrets for those incidents since I did not initiate them. I do not allow anyone to use my Girlfriend or me as door mats. The old saying: "Vengeance is mine saith the Lord." is commendable, but I also know the Lord is busy so I try to help him by taking care of things myself . . . . and I don't have to wait to see the results.

We hope that whatever your disability problem is, it is fixable and temporary. God Bless.

Best Always

Think you nailed it. Thanks for stepping in. It's easy to think of something, then write about it and not realize how it will be interpreted. Fallen prey to that myself.

Just seeing these replies now.
472 S/E.  I had no  malicious intent.  And did not realize that you would interpret in a hurtful way.
So I apologize , that was not my intent.
Was actually trying to convey a way that maybe Bob would take you on a expedition as a co-pilot, and like anyone (including me) , it's easy to tell someone else what to do better, or they are doing it wrong, ie. being a backseat driver.  That was all.
And while I cannot know how you feel being paralyzed , I have my own health conditions to deal with, and live vicariously through those on the board including Bob.

Title: Re: Here we go again
Post by: 472 R/T SE on September 01, 2022, 07:27:29 PM
"how to do things better" is what set me off.  To me it was like wtf is that supposed to mean thinking you thought of me as a know it all or something.  And thats what got me.  I pipe in when I think I'm sure of something and if I'm not I'm the first to admit to being wrong.  I hate people spouting off wrong info.

Also I seen a post where someone was wanting to trade their purple Challenger for a wing car.  That '71 purple Challenger all of sudden became my screen saver replacing the Oreo cookie '71 cuda.  That day I got online your car  was still in my window and I came here and was like, NO WAY.  I love his ride and hes talking shit...typical for me.

I've had so much bad luck.  Everytime i turn around something happens that affects me.
Ive seen men die and maimed on the my jobs.
Thats my biggest issue.  About every 2-3 days I'm dreaming or laying in bed watching 2 iron workers running mid air from 5 stories up falling to their death.  Or the co worker getting underneath a crane boom section to beat pins out and having the section fall on him.  I just knew he was dead.  Or getting out of the backseat of a car and having the driver fall back into me cause someone put a knife to his throat killing him.  Or...  I could fill this post up, recently divorced now, trying to do this on my own, etc.

So maybe I'm on the defensive all the time.  I don't mean to, its just I'm constantly preparing myself for the shoe to drop.  I should have messaged you this but figure this will help explain why 472 is the way he is?
I finally set up an appt @ the local mental health place, today.  I'm trying.

Now, car show raffles...forget about it.  Im winning everything needing help to carry it all, lol.

Please accept my apologies sir.  I was in the wrong.  These f computers, texting are so hard to convey.

I'm out...
